How to Use Pigments

Alright Makeup Geeks, you have been asking for it and here it is! 🙂 Today’s video is all about pigments! There are so many ways to incorporate pigments into your look and I am going to share with you 5 ways to use pigments to your advantage.  Pigments are fun and can be used in many different ways. Don’t be intimidated by them, once you play with them and learn how versatile they are you will love them. (if you haven’t already, check out our Makeup Geek Pigments)

So let’s get started learning about pigments….:-)

What Are Pigments?

Pigments are a loose powder and are basically the main ingredient in eyeshadow minus the binder that keeps them pressed in a pan. Usually the binder, what ever kind is used, dulls the color once added. When the binders are excluded then what you have is a brightly pigmented loose powder known as a “pigment”. Most pigments are shimmery however, there are some matte shades as well.

How to Use Pigments

There are limitless ways to use pigments, however I am going to share 5 of the easiest and best ways I know to use them.

1. EYES – Use a light to medium shade and gently pat on the lower lid. This is great when you are short on time and need something that looks good but is quick. Simply dip a flat, stiff brush into the pigment and place in the lid. Press the brush into the pigment and tap off any excess. You can keep the color below the crease or bring it up slightly past the crease. Use a fluffy dome brush to blend out the crease and feather out any harsh lines. This adds a perfect and easy pop to your eyes.

2.  CHEEKS – These work wonders as highlights for the top of your cheekbones and for adding dimension to your look. One of my favorites to use is “New Year’s Eve“. This is a stunning soft beige with flecks of gold. Just make sure you use one that is light and works to compliment your skin tone. To use, dip your brush into the pigment and place in the lid and press the brush into the pigment. Tap off the excess and gently sweep along the top of the cheekbone. You can also use this in the inner corner of the eyes to open them and make them appear larger, on the upper lip along the Cupid’s Bow to make your lips look fuller, and under the brow as a highlight.

3.  LIPS – Pigments can be mixed with any lip gloss or lipstick to make your own custom lip color. Take a small amount of clear lip gloss and add to the back of your hand or on a flat surface. (You can use a lid or a small palette as long as it’s flat) Dip your brush into the pigment and mix with the gloss until you have a paste then apply to your lips with a lip brush. You don’t want to mix or apply it with a wand as not to transfer the color back into the remaining gloss. You can also use pigments with lipsticks by cutting a small section of the lipstick and doing the same thing. This will tone done a bright color, change the undertone or add shimmer. You can also mix and match pigments to get the perfect shade!

4. EYELINERS– As liquid eyeliners, pigments are great, especially when you need a custom shade. To create your own liner, use a mixing medium like the FACE Atelier Transforming Gel or the Makeup Forever Aqua Seal, and add a small amount to the inside of the lid to the pigment. There should be plenty in the lid to do this! Add just a couple of drops of your mixing medium to the lid and with a small brush mix together until you get a paste then line your lids as usual. You can also apply this to the entire lid for an extreme metallic look. Mix and match shades to create the perfect shade to compliment your eyes. The options are limitless. 🙂 Continue reading

The 1 Minute Winged Liner

Hi Makeup Geeks!

I know there’s many days when you’re rushing out the door for work, but still want to look polished and have at least a little makeup on. Winged liner has been trendy for a few years now, so I wanted to give you a trick for doing it in 1 minute.  That’s right, just one minute! Nobody wants to skip their trip to Starbucks to do a 10 minute makeup look when you can do it quicker AND have your coffee 😉

Products Needed:

  • Black or Brown Gel Liner – Makeup Geek Gel Liner in “Immortal” or “Mobster”   (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Bent Eyeliner Brush    (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Scotch Tape

Simply place the scotch tape along the outer part of your eye- use your lower lash line as a guideline.  Take your bent liner brush or any super small makeup brush and apply the eyeliner along the tape, connecting it to your upper lash line.  You want to fill it in to form a triangle shape- this is what gives the illusion of winged liner.

If you have an extra minute, you can turn your winged liner into a softly smudged cat eye that works great for daytime.  All you need are 2 more products:

  • Dark Brown Eyeshadow – Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in “Bada Bing”    (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Pencil Smudge or Eye Smudging Brush    (Makeup Geek Store)

Take a pencil brush and smudge a dark brown eyeshadow (or any color for that matter) on top of your gel liner.  Start to smudge it upwards to smoke out the liner, staying close to your lash line as well as the tape you placed on earlier.  All you’re doing is turning the winged liner into a smudged out cat eye shape by “smoking out” the eyeshadow.

I hope this helps you all in your makeup looks when you’re in a hurry! Makeup doesn’t have to take a long time- it’s all about the technique and tools.

3 Steps to Thicker Looking Lashes

All women desire longer, thicker lashes. But no one wants to spend a lot of money on getting lash extensions or take the time of applying false lashes every day. Having dramatic lashes with length and volume makes your eyes appear bigger and can transform your face instantly. So, today I am going to share with you three easy steps you can do daily to achieve longer more lustrous lashes.

  1. Curl Your Lashes – This is the first step to making your lashes appear longer and thicker. Right now my favorite eyelash curler is the Tarte Picture Perfect. It has a soft rubber tip which is great for curling the lashes well.

Begin by placing the curler at the base of your eyelashes and hold for 3 seconds. Next, move the curler out to the middle of your lashes and hold for 3 seconds and then repeat on the tip of the lashes. Check out my video on how to curl you lashes like a pro:

  1. Apply TWO Mascaras – The first mascara you want to use is a thickening mascara with a big wand like the Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara. The bigger wand adds a lot of product to the lashes giving them a fuller effect. The second mascara is for length and should have a skinny wand like the L’Oreal False Fiber Lashes Mascara. The skinny wand gets at the base of the lashes very well and adds extra length and volume.

  1. Use Black Gel Liner – Applying a black gel liner to the upper waterline darkens the base of your of your eyelashes making them appear thicker. To do this, use a eyeliner pencil as a tool and dip it into a good water resistant eyeliner like the Maybelline Eye Studio or Makeup Geek’s Immortal and run it along the upper rim of your lashline. If you don’t find it to harsh you can do this to the lower waterline as well. To enhance the lashes even more add a small amount under the eye coming in 1/2 of the way.                                           iStock_000011555617Medium

You should be able so see a huge difference in your lashes with these 3 easy steps.  I hope this helps give you what you need to create stunning, almost false looking lashes that everyone will love!

Beauty Bites: Getting Glowy Cheeks!

Hello Makeup Geeks and welcome to BEAUTY BITES! This is a new series full of quick tips to help you get out the door and on your way. Each video will focus on a different product that will help you on days you are in a rush but still want to look your best. 🙂

Today we will be focusing on how to achieve that healthy glow that we all love. The best way to do that is with a cream blush. Please don’t feel intimidated by cream blushers. They are easy to use and add a fresh and healthy glow to your skin.

Cream Blush

These are a couple of my favorites:

  • Stilla Convertible Blushes – Gerbera – (Amazon) (eBay)
  • NYX –  (Amazon) (eBay)

To apply gently tap the tips of your 2 fingers into the cream blush and pat the excess onto the back of your hand. Gently pat the cream blush along your cheekbones and the apples of your cheeks for a youthful, stunning glow.  If you feel you have added to much simply pick up a powder puff or a sponge and lighten the color.

Cream blushes really are so easy to do and so incredibly quick which makes them perfect when you are in a hurry or when you want a glowy finish. As always my wonderful Makeup Geeks, stay happy and healthy!
