Five Budget Makeup Buys (All Under £6.00) Both You & Your Purse Will Love For Spring

Makeup for me is all about experimentation, finding something new and discovering a steal that you want to recommend to all your friends. Although I would always opt to spend more on my foundation and skincare, when it comes to the majority of my makeup bag there’s always room for a bargain. Over the last few weeks a tonne of super shiny and expensive makeup products have landed on my desk, but what’s making me stand up and take notice are the incredibly affordable versions that you don’t even have to wait to treat yourself to – because when they’re less than a coffee and slice of cake, it would be rude not to really. From all the bits and bobs that have made their way to me in the last weeks, these are the five that have all made me go ‘ooooh’… And even better, none of them are more than six quid!

1. Collection Lasting Perfection Colour Correctors (£4.19)
If you’re a fan of the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (and I know so many of you are – there was almost a riot when it went out of stock!) then you’ll love these colour correcting additions that help to create an even more flawless base. The same texture and pigment, these are available in either a yellow, lilac or green variant to counteract dullness, sallowness or redness. Creamy and highly saturated, these work really well on the skin on their own (obviously under foundation) or mixed with your usual concealer if you’re not a fan of too many layers. Colour correction may have been a trend in 2016, but it’s actually been a pro secret for years – so don’t dismiss it!

2. Essence Volume Stylist Curl & Hold Mascara (£3.00)
This German brand is frustratingly only available in Wilko, but it is available to buy online. They have so many great little bargains on offer, most of which are only a few pounds – including their mascaras which are generally a bit of a hidden gem. This ‘Volume Stylist Curl & Hold’ features a slightly curved wand (that you can’t see in the pic) and a tonne of bristles, as well as a reservoir to hold an excess of product, which together results in a super lifted and voluminous lash line. Personally I find that Essence mascaras can leave me with Panda eyes if I’m not careful with their removal, but I’m really enjoying the result this provides. It’s a great one to use every day, if you can’t bear to reach for the YSL/Dior/MAC/whatever posh mascara you’re currently loving.

3. Rimmel London Super Gel Nail Polish (£5.99)
I’ve bought Rimmel nail plishes for as long as I’ve been wearing colour on my talons, mainly because they’re incredibly affordable and offer a huge range of colour. The latest launch from the brand is a ‘Super Gel’ alternative to gel nails, which is applied in two stages: the colour followed by the ‘gel effect’ topcoat. Thanks to the super thick brush, application is a doddle and a true-to-bottle colour can be achieved in only two coats (although the first can be a touch streaky, so keep with it!) I’m really impressed with the smoothness of the finish which really covers and conceals any texture imperfections or flaking, as well as the longevity – a couple of days in and it’s still going strong, even if I don’t expect it to stay put for anywhere near the 14 days it promises. My current fave is undoubtedly Purple Splash, but there are over twenty shiny shades to choose from.

4. NYX Vivid Brights Cream Colour (£5.50)
A brand I’m quickly falling head over heels for, NYX just seem to nail affordable beauty while still providing textures and formats that are a little bit different. These Cream Colour pots offer a really strong pigment that can be used in a multitude of ways – either as an eyeshadow, liner or even lip colour or blush if the need arises! Although some shades are richer and creamier than others (generally speaking the pastel shades are harder to work with,) they’re beautiful to blend and would look amazing paired with a flush of bronzer this summer. The creamy texture does take some getting used to if you’re usually just a powder eyeshadow girl, but the beauty is all in the experimentation.

5. Olivia Hale Blush & Bronze (From £1.99)
Part of a whole brand launch into Home Bargains (which seems to be more of an Oop North thing – it’s always my first stop when I visit my mum in Derby!) these may be packaged in slightly cheap and tacky plastic cases, but it’s what’s inside that counts. I’ve tried a whole heap of makeup from the brand and these are definitely my top picks (alongside the glosses and polishes, where you can’t really go wrong) as they’re soft, pigmented and easy to buff into skin. If you don’t want to take your expensive makeup on holiday with you this summer (we’ve all been there when it arrives on the luggage carousel smashed to smithereens,) then these offer a super cheap way to still look hot – no compromise needed. FYI the bronzer is very shimmery though, so proceed with caution if you’re not into a glistening cheekbone…

Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette Review

Hello Makeup Geeks! Today I have a review of the Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette. I know a lot of people have seen this and there have been several reviews on it, but I wanted to share my thoughts about it with you as well. It’s been a while since I reviewed anything from Urban Decay and they really do have amazing products and great packaging. Every year they release a new palette and this year they gave us the Vice 2 Palette.

So let’s get on to the review. 🙂

Urban Decay Vice 2 01

URBAN DECAY VICE 2 PALETTE

The Urban Decay Vice 2 retails for $59.00. This may seem like a lot but when you break down the cost it’s really not. This palette includes 20 new and exclusive shades at 0.03 ounces each. UD eyeshadows typically sell for $18.00 for 0.05 ounces of product, so overall this is a great price for the amount of shadows you get and also for the great packaging. It also include a dual ended brush that I am not a huge fan of.

PACKAGING

I really love the packaging on this. It’s not your typical cardboard like the Vice 1 was, this is a sturdy plastic case swirled with shades of purple and embossed with the raised diamond like logo “UD”.  There are several things that I really like about this palette;

  1. Besides the palette being sturdy, it also has a button that you push to allow the lid to glide open gently.
  2. It has a large mirror which is the same size as the palette.
  3. The top of the palette with the mirror doesn’t fall all the way back, it stays open which makes it convenient to use.

This is where I feel the majority of the money goes to on this palette. They really spared no expense and overlooked no detail when designing this. Continue reading

Perfect Feet for the Lazy or Impatient: The Micro Pedi

dry foot skin micropedi

Well this was twenty-four quid well spent; the Emoji Micro Pedi is the most fun I’ve had with my feet in years. (There’s some kind of rude joke in there somewhere but I haven’t the energy to eke it out.) A sort of miniature sander that you run over dry foot skin, it requires virtually no physical effort yet has the distinctly satisfying effect of kicking up clouds of dead-skin-dust. Gross, but – as I said – distinctly satisfying. When you think about how long you have to sit with a manual foot file to even make a dent in a hard, shell-like heel….well. This Micro Pedi gadget achieves smoother skin in mere seconds. If you’re constantly battling with bits of dry foot skin or hard, calloused heels then this is one gadget I can highly recommend.

I was never convinced by the “Ped Egg” or any of these cheese grater-style foot files; in fact, when I attended the Margaret Dabbs Clinic (post here) the podiatrist was quite vocal about staying well clear of them, saying that they removed skin unevenly and ineffectively. Much better to go for the good quality sandpapery files and do the filing routine little and often. Which I never do because it’s so bloody boring. Where’s the fun in sitting on the floor sawing away at your heels? It’s almost as painfully dull as using a foot scrub. (High up on my list of the most pointless body products ever invented. There are good ones, admittedly, but tell me: in which situation is it convenient to use one? Not in the shower, as you’d put your back out and/or break your neck slipping over in the tray, and not in the bath, as you’d have to do some weird yoga move and it would completely kill your relaxation vibes. No, the only way to use a foot scrub would be as part of a full pedicure routine, sat in your dressing gown on the bathroom floor with a towel beneath your feet. And, quite frankly, there are other things I’d rather be doing.)

micro pedi review

If you’re getting the impression that I’m rather lazy when it comes to foot care then you’d be right: that’s why the Micro Pedi is one of my best Amazon purchases ever. A whizz over hard skin once or twice a week keeps my feet smooth and soft (don’t remove too much at once, you need some kind of hoof unless you only ever stroll on sandy beaches or bouncy castles) and the whole process takes approximately thirty seconds. Switch it on (you need batteries but they last for ages – I use rechargeable) and simply run the filing roller over the hard skin, being careful to keep the roller moving and not keep it one place for too long. You don’t want to set your feet on fire! There are different rollers that fit into the handle so you can give your feet an “extreme” makeover (watch the sparks fly) or stick to a regular, sensible coarseness for tackling normal “horniness”. (Again, joke here somewhere but I don’t have the energy.)

Since I bought my Micro Pedi they have introduced a “Premium Gift Set” – for a pound extra you get a pink Micro Pedi, spare extra-coarse rollers, scissors, toe separators and some other stuff that I stopped trying to identify because, to be quite honest, a pound extra even for the spare sandpaper things is a total bargain! Find that set on Amazon here.

Your own “perfect feet” tips? Any particular creams or lotions? I really want to try those treatments that peel off your whole lot of foot skin at once, they sound both gross and brilliant. And I do very much like the Diamancel files for manual foot-sanding…

PS: apologies for the dead skin in the photos. I should really have ordered a new roller for the picture, but I’m about to give birth and so thought I’d just make do with what I had. It’s not even my dead skin, it’s Mr AMR’s! Ha. Sorry to those who may never, ever tune in for another post again. Oh – and the nail polish shown is Shifting Sands by Deborah Lippmann and it’s amazing. Perfect summer nude. Applies beautifully, stays on for an age, is a brilliant “skin tone” that makes your hands look like mannequin hands. You can find it online here – £16.
