Bee Good

If bees knew how on-trend they are right now, I’m sure there would be some properly diva beehaviour! No more bee puns, I promise, but do keep a look out for new Brit brand, Bee Good, and their beautiful range of British wildflower honey-infused products. There’s a lovely little back-story to Bee Good Beauty – based in rural Hampshire, the brand uses honey, propolis and beeswax blended with active botanicals and plant oils and will ensure that some profit from sales is sent back to www.showmethehoney.org.

What I love is the attention to detail – with each order, you’ll get a little note which you can tear up and plant in your garden for a surprise crop of wildflowers. It seems like a very sweet thing to do. I’ve had a go with both of the above products, so first up, Honey & Wildflower Daily Moisturiser (which doesn’t smell of honey – it’s more of a light floral) that is very nicely hydrating and seems ultra softening on the skin. The second product is Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser is a bit of a mystery as it doesn’t really specify what the 2-in-1 element is, but it does a lovely, skin softening cleanse that you rinse away with water and a (provided) muslin cloth. There are lots of products – these are just the two I’ve tried, but I’d recommend keeping an eye out for the Honey & Wild Water Mint Cleansing Water because I think that’s going to be the star of the show.

The whole thing about bees is how you use the by-product – personally I don’t like to go anywhere near bee products that use bee venom (no matter what the ‘experts’ say, venom collection isn’t a nice process at all). Bees are constantly under threat from changing environments, so finding uses for what they produce is crucial in keeping our British bee populations healthy. The more resources and money we can put into bees and keeping their environments friendly, the more likely it is that we will see bees start to thrive again. I can’t imagine summer without the buzz of a busy bee.

Two lovely beauty things that have caught my eye, and they both have waiting lists before they’ve even hit the shelves for the first time. How do you feel about waiting lists for special edition makeup items? Are you are complete makeup obsessive who simply has to have the latest eyeshadow shades or collectable compact? Or do you tend to shop for the things you know and trust, preferring to browse the permanent, cult products that have stood the test of time? I don’t think that I have ever put my name on a waiting list for anything, apart from at the doctor’s surgery when I’ve been desperate for an appointment and gone on that cancellations thing that they do… I just can’t bear the suspense! If I know I want something then I need to know that I’ll be able to get it – I’m not the kind of person who can get all excited about a new coat or bag or whatever if there’s a chance that I won’t be able to buy the bloody thing anyway!

But I’ve gone off-target: I wanted to tell you about the new Naked Vault from Urban Decay and the Virtual Domination cheek palette from NARS. Both land in the UK tomorrow, the 1st November, and both are likely to have makeup aficionados reaching for their credit cards faster than most of us can even say “makeup aficionados”. Which is why I’m giving you a pre-warning, just in case one of these cosmetic delights takes your fancy. (I have to say that the NARS palette would make a particularly lush Christmas present!)

Do you ever find that sometimes, with beauty products, you don’t realise how good something is until you stop using it? That is exactly what has happened to me with the gorgeous Shampooing Délicat à la rose by top hair colourist, Christophe Robin. When I was using it, I appreciated that it was the height of luxury and that it had the most unbelievable scent and that my hair seemed nice and bouncy, but I didn’t quite give it the respect it deserved.

Because fast-forward five weeks and I am missing it sorely. I left both the shampoo and conditioner in my Mum’s bathroom and – though she has returned everything else I forgot to pack up, including a pot of Manuka honey and a box of breast pads – we have not yet been reunited. I have a sneaking suspicion that my Mum has used the shampoo, fallen in love and is now sat there hoping I’ve forgotten about it.

This rose shampoo is lush. Formulated for fine hair, it does an amazing job at gently cleansing (my scalp pretty much fell apart after I left my Mum’s and started using some cheapie stuff I found in the boot of the car) and leaves hair properly bouncy and lovely. The conditioner is surprisingly rich for something in a bottle – it’s not quite a “cream” but it’s far more heavyweight than your usual non-masque conditioner. Rich in feel, but lightweight in effect – there’s no weighing down of the hair or that funny, cloying residue that you can sometimes get if you use the wrong product. (When hair isn’t the same for about three washes afterwards!) It left mine looking full-bodied and non-fuzzy. Regardez:

My bathtime ritual at Mum’s (I was there for a month with a tiny baby, so bathtime was my little space to be myself): a couple of drops of the Floris White Rose bath essence and then a hair wash with my Christophe Robin rose duo. I felt like some kind of French aristocrat. It was all very decadent. Apart from the fact that my Mum’s house is like Butlins for spiders – they seem to arrive by the dozen and set up home everywhere from the lampshades to the cereal cupboard. My Mum puts bowls of conkers out to discourage them, but still they return. There’s nothing that kills a relaxing bath quicker than a spider making its way down the shower hose towards your feet…
