1) Hurrah! The Sunday Tittle Tattle is back. I’m back. Part of me wishes that it was still in Greece, but it’s good to start the New Year feeling relaxed and healthy and positively brimming with Vitamin D. (“NEW YEAR?” I hear you screech, “what the hell is that woman on about?” And I get you; it’s September, not January. But does nobody else still think in terms of school years? I have never quite managed to kick the habit, fifteen years after leaving sixth form (oh God). I suppose I then did Uni for many years, on and off, and my Mum and brother both teach, so they think in school years… Tell me I’m not the only one that does this? I find September to be far more cathartic in terms of “new starts” than January could ever be. The revitalising effects of the summer, Christmas to look forward to.. Discuss, comment, tell me your thoughts.) Where was I? Brimming with Vitamin D! Yes. I have a few more holiday posts to go and then I’ll shut up about it.
2) I have been catching up on one of my favourite blogs, Incurably Curious. Have I told you about this blog before? It’s so bloody funny, I actually find myself blurting out weird shout-laughs if I read it on the train. If you ever need cheering up, click on over and read through the archives – the review of Fifty Shades of Grey is just spot-on.
3) So many of you have been chomping at the bit for pet pictures, so here they are: Mr Bear rolling on a rug (above) and Dexter wearing a cardigan. Kind of.
4) Also, here’s me in a Kayak:
Mr AMR bought this earlier on in the year and said that he would use it every day to go up and down the river in front our house. So far he has been in it twice. So I am commandeering it and shall be learning how to kayak. Really, really fast. I did five minutes the other day and was knackered beyond belief so I’m guessing it’s pretty good exercise. If anyone has any kayaking tips, pray share. I’m all over the shop at the moment, zig-zagging around the river like some kind of demented Outward Bound instructor.

Lots of people have body and beauty concerns when they’re pregnant – fears about their body changing and never returning to its former glory, worries about hair loss and stretch marks and a dread of getting spotty, hormonal skin. I was one of those incredibly annoying people who loved every minute of my pregnancy (conveniently ignoring the horrendous first few months during which I felt as though I was suffering the world’s worst hangover) and I really enjoyed the changes that happened to my body.
My main concern was a skincare one, really, because a few of my friends had developed very dark spots on their face during their pregnancies and some had experienced full-blown chloasma, which is when the hyperpigmentation is quite severe and looks like a sort of mask around the eyes and nose. Frequently, pregnancy marks like this disappear after the baby’s birth, but I had friends who developed dark spots from being in the sun and not protecting their skin and these seemed to have stuck around.
Dark spots are one of the skincare concerns that you don’t think about so much when you’re younger – you worry more about getting wrinkles, or getting pimples – but hyperpigmentation can have a much more dramatic impact on the overall look of the skin than either of those things. Apparently the steep rise in estrogen levels during pregnancy can stimulate excess melanin production, which is what causes the dark brown patches of pigmentation, and so I wanted to be extra-careful with my skin during pregnancy. I made sure that I wore an SPF every day and also an antioxidant serum beneath it, for added protection.
Since then, I’ve been very interested in the various serums and treatments that can be used to help protect the skin from dark spots and the latest one to cross my path is the Vinoperfect Complexion Correcting Radiance Serum from beautiful French brand Caudalie.
This serum is France’s number one pharmacy-stocked anti-dark spot solution and has been the bestseller since 2008. No mean feat when you consider how many brilliant products you can find on the hallowed shelves of the French Pharmacie! Vinoperfect Complexion Correcting Radiance Serum contains Viniferine, a powerful natural ingredient that’s taken from grapevine sap, and olive squalene for deep but non-greasy moisturisation.
The stabilised Viniferine used as a key ingredient in the serum has been shown to work in a number of different ways to help prevent dark spots and create an even, radiant skintone. Most importantly, it enables the production of tyrosinase, which regulates melanin production, and also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which limits the synthesis of melanin. Viniferine also helps to promote microcirculation in the blood capillaries so that radiance is boosted, and it demonstrates a level of antioxidant activity that can increase the skin’s own protection against UV rays. Clinical tests for Viniferine showed a reduction in dark spots after just four weeks of use and that the complexion was more radiant; their tests also showed Viniferine to be sixty-two times more effective at regulating melanin production than Vitamin C.
I’ve been using Caudalie’s Vinoperfect for the past three weeks and though I don’t have any dark spots to get rid of, I have been spending quite a lot of time outside and my skin looks nicely even in tone rather than the random areas of tan I usually end up with on my face! I also find the serum to be nicely moisturising, so much so that I’ve skipped moisturiser on a number of occasions and just gone straight in with my BB Cream or SPF or whatever I’ve been using.
A quick and easy skincare step, then – I’ll update you again with results once I’ve finished the bottle, but I’m finding that a little goes a long way, so you may have a bit of a wait! Well, hello! Things are busy over in these parts and I have really been struggling to find the time to blog between other projects in the past few months (FYI, you can hire me for freelance work and I’m just a joy to collab with ;)). I have about twelve million posts photographed and ready to go and SO many things to share with you, so it’s time to make some time to blog! And first up we have a few favourites from the past couple of weeks…
Since bleaching all of the life from my hair I’ve had to up my haircare game x1000 to keep the straw feeling at bay. I’ve been religiously using the Swell Hair Ultimate Protect & Renew Serum after every wash mixed with some of the John Masters Rose & Apricot Hair Milk. The Swell serum is a silicone-free hair serum to banish frizz, conceal split ends and offer heat protection. I really like this because of it’s super thin/watery formula that disappearers into the hair without a hint of grease or stickiness, plus it mixes with and thins out the thick-ish cream John Masters hair milk nicely. I’ve been using the JM milk for so long now it’s got to be a firm favourite, it has managed to keep my hair feeling soft and in a semi-okay condition throughout all the colour, so that’s a-okay with me.
I’m not much into nude lips at all but recently I’ve found myself reaching for the Beauty Counter Lip Sheer in the shade ‘petal’. I got this in a Beauty Heroes box at the beginning of the year and even though it’s a totally gorgeous product (um hello, that packaging!) I didn’t reach for it at all after the initial excitement wore off. I’m not sure what’s changed, maybe just an unconscious switch up, but I like it a lot at the moment. It’s sheer enough to not be too pink, too nude, or too pale. Perfect.
Perhaps the most out of place in this bunch is that little pot with an illustration of Voldemort on the lid. That is the ‘You Know Who’ Face Highlight from Brija Cosmetics, and oh boy it’s beautiful. I love love love it. I had been looking for the perfect powder highlighter for ages, it was surprisingly difficult because every natural brand out there only seems to be releasing cream highlights! What’s that about? But Katie came to the rescue and added this to her recent Brija order for me after I had tried a sample. It’s not too shimmery and has a gorgeous, ethereal blue/purple glow, so pretty!
Lastly, the SkinOwl Mangosteen Beauty Drops have been pretty much all I’ve used on my skin at night. The 60ml bottle is huge and never ending – I’m really afraid I’m going to waste it and have it go off before I can use it up, I’m not even a third of the way through! It does smell divine, even Mikey notices when I use it and says I smell nice (and he notices literally nothing). The oil is just simply baobab and mangosteen oils, it’s simple, rich and calming. I only need about 3-4 drops for my face to leave it perfectly nourished and feeling cushy – I use extra to spread down my neck and chest now too (gotta use it up!) and love how calm my complexion looks every morning after use.
