August Skincare and Makeup Favourites

makeup and skincare favourite products

Monthly favourites are here again – the weeks are just hurtling by, aren’t they? Before we know it, it’ll be the C-word! (Christmas.) It’s quite a sharp and to-the-point beauty edit, this month, partly because for half of it I was testing out the Genifique serum and therefore slightly restricted, skincare-wise; but mostly because I’ve been incredibly lazy with my makeup routine. I’ve been “off-duty” in terms of appearance; stuck indoors ploughing through mountains of work, wearing tracksuits with various food stains on them and looking distinctly unglamorous. But I am fully intending to get back into the swing of things next week, so expect a barrage of foundation reviews and eyeshadow pictures and lipstick swatches…

Sorted Food: Can Food Make You Beautiful?

sorted food performance

This week I’m a guest on the brilliant food channel, Sorted Food. They are doing a series on performance food, talking to people who have jobs that rely on a good diet, and I’m the latest guest. An honour, because I’ve watched Sorted Food grow into a mega-channel on Youtube and it really does provide brilliant cooking content. And plenty of humour.

I get the feeling that there will be a lot of “how is SHE a model?” comments, possibly because I chose to wear an XL Hollister plaid shirt to “hide” my baby bump. Big mistake. It just makes the whole of me look slightly inflated! Ah well, you live and learn… Body-con maternity wear for me from now on!

If you can’t see the video below, then you can click through to Sorted Food here.

This Summer’s Hand Adornments.

summer nails and bracelet

I’ve found my perfect hand accessories for this summer; Chanel’s nail colour in “Holiday”, a fiery orange-red, and this brilliant Aldo bracelet that I bought on ASOS last week. The bracelet reminds me a lot of a Missoni one I saw ages ago when I was in Milan – it has a really cool woven texture that makes the piece look far more expensive than it actually is. Which isn’t difficult, because it was only twelve quid! (It’s here online.)

chanel holiday nail polish

I think that the nail polish sets it all off very nicely – “Holiday” has been a favourite for a couple of years now. It has that wonderful bonus benefit of somehow making your skin look warm and sunkissed – perfect for seeing you through your summer hols! You can find it at Boots.com here.

Makeup How-To: Subtle Daylight Contouring

how to contour for daylight

If there’s one makeup trend that has completely divided us beauty-obsessed people it’s the trend for drawing brown stripes on our faces and then rubbing them in as though we’re trying to remove stubborn patches of dirt. AKA “contouring”. One of the problems with this contouring business, I think, is that lots of demonstrations and tutorials happen in front of studio lights and/or are quite graphic and hard. And unless you’re the type of person who never leaves the house during daylight hours and is only ever seen with full-on evening makeup, it’s all just a little too harsh.

I asked makeup artist supremo Caroline Barnes (you will remember her from last week’s video) to create a contour for people who don’t like to contour. Soft, realistic but still dramatic enough to sculpt and shape the face. (If you want really, really soft and natural then it’s not really contouring – you could use a slightly darker face powder or very pale bronzer to create a shadow but we’re probably moving out of the realms of the “contour” then. Which is fine. I have to say I think I’m happiest with the softly-softly touch-of-sculpt!)

Caroline uses the brilliant gel sculpt from Illamasqua (here) and also MAC’s Cream Base in Pearl (here) but I’ve listed all of the products below the video screen for easy reference. I particularly love the way that Caroline uses concealer to lighten the middle part of my face – and also the eye-socket/nose-sculpting trick looks amazing! Here you go – enjoy:

Everyday Hair Heroes…

best hair care products

A nice little hair video to finish off the week. I did a roundup of my most-used hair products – shampoos, hair masques, conditioners and so on – because people are always asking and I don’t often delve into the world of hair on my Youtube channel. Perhaps because I don’t really do a lot to my hair and so the products I tend to use the most are the ones that just make it look sleeker, shinier and give it a bit of an undone vibe. I always think that it might be a bit boring for those who want to know about pink hair dyes and undercuts and semi-mohicans and all of that jazz. Not my cup of tea, I’m afraid.

So it’s all about the grooming and keeping things swishy, for me. Hair products for natural hair – things that you can just bung in and leave. No tools required. Had I included my favourite tools in this video then they would have been – without a doubt – Mark Hill’s Wicked Waver and the Big Hair from Babyliss. Both incredibly easy to use, both pretty affordable. You can find my full review of the Wicked Waver here and there’s a video demo of the Babyliss here. Both can be bought at Boots.com.
