The New Mum “Switch Off” Challenge! #ad

olay regenerist 3 point age-defying night cream

A few weeks ago I embarked on a bit of a mission: to improve the quality of my sleep. It would be completely unrealistic to expect to be able to get more sleep, because I have a new baby and am juggling work, family and a dog who likes to get up to do a wee in the garden at 3am every morning; and so whereas a year ago my goal was to go to bed earlier and clock up more hours in bed, now it’s simply to make whatever hours I do get count.

Olay challenged me to improve the quality of my sleep over the course of a few weeks, by implementing some of their top tips (they worked with sleep consultant Dr Nerina Ramlakhan to come up with the most useful and realistic ideas) and by carrying out a nightly “Lights Out” facial massage. The massage has been created by the lovely Anastasia Achilleos, top facialist and Olay’s Global Ambassador – you can follow the steps in the video at the bottom of the page. The moves are very simple, but so effective; I love the fact that you can just lie down in the dark on your bed and fall asleep afterwards! Anastasia designed the massage to relax the body and mind so that it’s destressed before sleeping – so many of us rush about and then just collapse, exhausted, into a kind of coma. It’s important to have some quiet time to really clear our minds, even if it’s for just a few minutes. (And this massage does take just a few minutes – three steps, three minutes; though you can obviously prolong the steps if you’re in the zone!)

Anastasia used the Olay Regenerist 3 Point Age-Defying Night Cream for the “Lights Out” massage and I’ve continued with it for the last few weeks. It’s fragrance free (which Anastasia loves because she lights candles or incense and doesn’t want to be distracted by a strongly-scented face cream) and it has just enough slip to perform the massage steps without leaving a greasy residue, even though I use quite a dollop! Although it doesn’t feel overly heavy, the moisturising effects are really good thanks to a nice whack of hyaluronic acid in the formula, and the cream also contains Olay’s highest concentration of penta-peptides. These help to lock in moisture as well as encourage surface skin cells to renew themselves more quickly, making the skin look visibly plumper and firmer. It also contains the ingredient niacinamide, which can help to make skintone more even and improve skin elasticity (I think it’s a bit of a wonder ingredient, you can read my post about it here) and so the Regenerist 3 Point Age-Defying Night Cream is really a bit of an anti-ageing all-rounder.

I must say that it’s a very nice habit to get into, lying there in bed and massaging your face – I think that just having those few minutes to do something that is completely and utterly for your own benefit is very important. It’s hard not to let all of your worries and stresses whizz about your brain, but blimey – if you can’t clear your head for three minutes then there’s no hope! I also tried to implement Dr Nerina’s tips for quality sleep:

  1. a warm bath in the evening
  2. a ban on electronics in the bedroom, and no tweeting or emailing for an hour or so before bed.
  3. hand-writing a list of things that are bothering you or stressing you out – but the list must be on paper, because using your iPad or phone will distract you, and you must write it outside of the bedroom so that you separate your sleeping place from the worries of everyday life.

I’d like to lie and say that I did really well with all of the above, but actually the two that I managed best – and this will come as no surprise – were the beauty-related things! I’ve been really making a point of having a nightly bath, if I can, with candles and oils and so on, just so I can “escape” for twenty minutes and think about nothing, and I’ve also done very well with my face massaging. The electronics thing? Not so good! Mainly because I have become slightly addicted to searching eBay for furniture in the middle of the night. And the lists rule? Well. I have been writing lists, but I can never be bothered to get out of bed in case the creaks wake the baby up, so I always write the list in the notes section of my iPhone. Oh dear. They are bloody good tips though – the electronics thing especially. It can not be good to be checking Twitter last thing before bed and first thing in the morning, and buying stuff on eBay at 2am is definitely terrible for my brain and my bank balance.

But I feel as though I’ve learnt these tips inside out, now, and that they are permanently ingrained on my mind. Even if I don’t manage the last two often, I still feel bad when I don’t do them, so at least I’m halfway there… I need to get back into reading my Kindle at night rather than looking at stuff on my iPhone, so I’ve just charged it up and will start that tonight.  Then I really can leave my iPhone outside – it’s not as though I need an alarm clock these days!

You can see all of the tips and also the “Lights Out” massage in action in my video below – I’ve listed the written steps underneath it for quick reference. You can find Olay’s Regenerist 3 Point Age-Defying Night Cream at Boots.com here.

The Easy Beachy Makeup Tutorial

ruth crilly telegraph bronzing video

I made a nice little bronzing video for The Telegraph this week; I was trying to channel 1990′s Kate Moss, so very dusty bronzed skin with nothing much on the eyes or lips. I put to use one of my favourite summertime products, Chanel’s Tan de Soleil, which is a cream bronzing base, and layered it up with some Guerlain Four Seasons bronzer in shade 2 (here). Go on over and check out the vid – if you need an incentive, then look at my “before” picture:

I know that I had a bit of a gormless expression before I started but still – what a difference! Definitely a good look to bust out if you have a bit of a hangover – it’s amazing what a bit of fake sun exposure can do for jaded, vampire-esque skin.

My Sunday Dog (Carrying) Walking Outfit…

ruth crilly with dexter cockapoo

Spring is definitely here, it seems. The threat of late snows and roof-battering winds has passed and I am packing up my winter coats ready to take to the dry cleaners. (The secret of coat longevity, I have found, is to dry clean them at the end of every winter and then hang them up in one of those breathable cotton suit covers with a moth repeller sachet popped into the bottom or looped over the coat hanger. My Jil Sander coat is on its 10th year, this year, and still looks absolutely new, despite the fact that I have worn it to death! Dry cleaning always seems like one of those ridiculous unnecessary expenses, but I think it’s worth it to prolong the life of a good coat.)

Sunday saw me walking the dog around Marylebone, spending some time with my brother and his girlfriend before they caught the train home. Later that day I was red-carpetting at the Empire Film Awards (a totally different story) and so I wanted to be comfortable and casual – the calm before the storm, if you will. I wore my new Cargo Skirt from Hush – what a little gem this is! Made from light grey cotton, it has all the hardiness of a denim skirt but the fabric is so soft to the touch. And it has more of a stretch than denim, too – it’s nice and forgiving around the waistband, if you catch my drift. (Tested that aspect properly with a Sunday pub lunch!) You can find the skirt here at Hush – I have a size 10.

And what better to go with the casual skirt than a pair of bright and funky Supra trainers? These are pink-and-white polka dot Vaiders and walking in them is like walking with air-bags inflated around your feet – properly, properly cushdy. They are actually on loan for a shoot I’m doing, but a full purchase is on the cards. I love my Converse, but in terms of comfort, there’s no comparison!

Surprise success of the whole winter has been my M&S coat. I don’t know whether you remember this tweedy biker jacket from last Autumn, but it has been quite the sartorial “dark horse”. It sat tucked away in the coat cupboard when the weather was chilly, but on every day with even the hint of sunshine, it came on out to be thrown over jeans or skirts as a much lighter alternative to the heavy black winter coat. So useful was this tweedy number that I actually have my eye on another M&S coat – again, quite casual in style and relaxed in fit, but this one is slightly shorter and looser. It’s called a “car coat” and you can see it here – let me know what you think. I might be having a complete moment of madness.

PS: I always feel like a total dick in sunglasses, but I am trying to wear them more. Post-30, the squinty-wrinkles definitely become more of an issue!

What’s In My Makeup Bag?

in my makeup bag

I went to my Mum’s for the weekend and in a quiet little moment to myself, thought I’d film a “What’s in my Makeup Bag” video. I haven’t done one in ages and I wanted to show you some of my current essentials, though I am something of a creature of habit and so you’ll have seen lots of the items before! The MV Organic Skincare moisturiser for a start – I literally don’t go anywhere without it, now. It seems to work on my pregnancy skin as a kind of multi-purpose salve, soothing everything from the itchy rash that keeps coming up on my lower shins to the little red patch that appears on my chin at regular intervals. And you’ve seen me bashing on about the Chanel foundation loads now: it’s just marvellous. So easy to use, such a great matte-but-glowy finish. No need to powder and doesn’t cling to flaky bits.

The makeup brushes shown are all total gems: the new Real Techniques “Bold Metals” shadow brush, their handy Duo Fibre Brush (brilliant for applying cheek colour with a light touch) and the Zoeva foundation brush with dense, stumpy bristles that just seem to buff your base into the most perfect finish. Only the Bold Metals is new to me; the other two have been staple tools for a while, now. I can highly recommend any of them for foolproof makeup application – I really must do a brush video, I have been meaning to for ages!

Here’s the vid – if you can’t be bothered to watch (please do: I’ve managed to shoot it using the most unflattering angle possible, it’s quite something. I’ve instantly gained around eight pounds, just on my face) then all of the product links are detailed below.

I’ve Found The 5 Best Parkas…

parka london five best parkas

A random theme for a video, you may think, but I love a parka during the winter months. And spring and autumn, for that matter; I probably clock up a good hundred days of parka-wearing every year. But so many of the parkas these days look and feel cheap – shiny fabric, horrible zips and shockingly bad scraps of faux-fur on the hoods. The faux-fur trimmings on parkas are a particular obsession of mine: I can’t believe how many brands manufacture coats that look as though they’ve had roadkill sewn to the top of the hoods!

five best parkas asos

So I tried a lot – a lot – of parkas before narrowing down my choices to the five you can see in the video below. I completely disregarded price when I was judging them, but fortunately there’s quite a nice spread – the cheapest is £40 (directly above, see here), the most expensive is £315 (top of page, see here). I’d be more than happy to wear any of them this winter, and have been pretty much living in the ones from Hush and Topshop.

topshop premium parka

The Topshop Premium Parka (above) has the best fur – it’s so lush and soft and runs down the inside of the coat as well as lining the hood. Considering the coat costs just less than £100 I think that it’s just brilliant, brilliant quality.

parka london coat with fur

The Parka London coat (top and above) is more of a winter coat with fur trim than a true parka, really – but it’s absolutely stunning and beautiful quality. The faux-fur is so ridiculously thick that the hood is slightly better down than up – you can get completely lost inside that hood, it’s almost as though you need a periscope to see where you’re going! If you’re looking to invest in something a bit smarter than a parka then this is the one for you. The sumptuous faux-fur looks so glamorous.

Anyway, watch the video and tell me which one’s your favourite – I’ve listed all of the outfit details below. You can also see those amazing Topshop boots in action as well as the Whistles t-shirt that I posted about the other day. Enjoy!
