Healthy Glow Makeup: Guerlain’s Joli Teint Powder

guerlain joli teint powder duo

There are two ways of looking at Guerlain’s “Terracotta Joli Teint Healthy Glow Powder Duo” (longest product name in the world, and breathe): either it’s a finishing powder that you sweep over your skin to warm it up and add that final layer of faked “rude health”, or – if you have particularly fair skin – it’s the perfect subtle bronzer for all-year-round bronzing. On me, with my fair-medium skintone, the Joli Teint powder works in much the same way that Chanel’s Les Beiges does: the effect is almost imperceptible, at first, but then after a few goes with the powder brush there’s a noticeable change in tone and glow. It’s not shimmer, it’s not colour, it’s just…a kind of healthiness.

Many people will see these types of powders as being rather pointless; they either want to bronze themselves or not. They want to finish with a powder that will keep shine away, or not. If they want to add a subtle hint of blush then they’ll do so, and they’ll do it with their blusher, thank you ever so much. Something that’s so subtle you can hardly tell that it’s there is many people’s idea of a total waste of time. However, I will say that I use my Chanel Les Beiges powder on an almost daily basis and it does have an effect: just one that you can’t quite put your finger on.

Chanel Les Beiges video review…

The Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint Powder Duo is very similar, but with an added crescent of pinky powder to mimic that “lightly sunkissed” effect. I have the very palest shade (00) and could probably, in all honesty, do with a tad darker, but have a look and see what you think. Here I am with just foundation (actually BB Cream, it’s the Precious one from l’Occitane, shade 02):

The skin looks fine, but see how the Joli Teint peps things up a bit in the next photo.

ruth crilly face bronzer review

It’s just like a very subtle injection of life, isn’t it? A day spent outdoors tending to the flower beds, or what have you. (Does anyone actually do that? The moment the sun comes out I’m usually flat out on a towel with my eyes closed! Sod the flowers.) Unless I’m going completely and utterly bonkers, there is a definite difference. Actually more so than you get with Chanel’s powders, I think, but mainly because with Les Beiges you match the powder to your skintone, so it has less of a hue to it, more of a glow. (You can go a shade or two down, to get that pale-bronze effect, but I’m not sure it’s as warming and summery as this Guerlain gem.)

And so: one person’s pointless is another’s treasure, or whatever the saying is. There are those who see no point in any of the subtle no-makeup makeup products on the market, but then there are others (me included) who bloody love them for their natural finishes. And also the fact that it’s very hard to overdo it with these types of “barely there” cosmetics – you’d have to be some kind of demented brush-wielder to get this powder wrong. It’s utterly, utterly foolproof.

You can find all four shades of the Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint Healthy Glow Powder Duo (*takes a nap*) on Escentual.com here – they cost £31.95 each.

Birthing and Pregnancy Chat with Caroline Hirons…

Screen Shot 2015-03-29 at 08.54.25

This post should probably be over on my pregnancy blog, The Uphill, but I know how many of you follow Caroline and I didn’t want you to miss out! Though please do feel free to skip this one if you have no interest whatsoever in pregnancy. Or birthing. It was just a casual pregnancy chat between friends, really, with the usual eyebrow-raises and sick-making faces that happen when Caroline and I get together…

On the subject of pregnancy: I have so many posts to write and only ten weeks to go until my due date! Time has just flown. Hopefully once I get my accommodation situation sorted I’ll have the mental and emotional energy to sit down and do some proper writing-up. At the moment, 80% of my time is spent trying to find holiday lets that a) have internet b) accept dogs and c) are within a twenty mile radius of my house. There is nothing. Nothing, I tell you… If anyone ever wants a sound financial investment, buy and then rent out a flat or holiday cottage in the Hertfordshire/Essex area – one that has high-speed broadband and takes dogs. You’d absolutely clean up.

August Hits and Misses

Hello Makeup Geeks! I have a fun review video for you today. I want to start doing these once a month to showcase hot new products, even if they are just new for me I want to share them with you all. These will be a variety of products that I would recommend you try, and some that you should skip. Hopefully, this will help you in finding new and exciting products to add to your collection. 🙂

So lets get started with this review!

Too Faced Pretty Rebel Palette

I have to admit the packaging on this is what first drew me in. These come with 10 different shades of eyeshadows, 2 matte and the rest are shimmer. My favorites are “Girly” which is a green/blue duochrome color that reminds me of our Utopia pigment. I also love the hot pink shade, “Totally Fetch” and “Badass” a sort of metallic blue. The gold “Instigator” is a favorite as well as it reminds me of our “Liquid Gold” pigment. I love that there is a matte dark brown for darkening the crease of the eye and the nude shade for highlight under the brow. I do wish some of the shades weren’t so bright so it was more versatile. However, the quality of the shadows and the packaging are amazing on this palette! Look for a full review by Leslie on this coming very soon! 🙂

Where to Buy: Amazon, eBay, Sephora

Price: $46.00

Le Blush Crème De Chanel

As you all know I love my Stila cream blushes but being the true Makeup Geek I am I got bored and decided to try a new one. While at Nordstrom I picked up this Chanel Cream Blush in the shade “Presage” a beautiful coral shade. This color is perfect for medium/dark skin. The quality of these are flawless! These have intense pigmentation and once applied dry down to an almost powder finish. The formula is a sort of satin with non- greasy finish. This almost has a mousse type of feel to it just slightly thicker. The colors are gorgeous and I wish I had picked up more.

Where to Buy: Amazon, eBay, Nordstrom

Price: $38.00

Chanel Blush 01

15 Shades of Sephora

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Sephora different companies came out with products. Bite Cosmetics came out with 15 lipglosses in this set, one for each year Sephora has been open. The packaging on these is great. These are very pigmented and very creamy and glossy as well. The downside is the texture is so incredibly sticky that it literally felt like glue on my lips. I wanted to love these as I love lipglosses and loved the packaging on these too and the size as they are convenient to throw in your purse and take with you on the go. But when I put these on they were so sticky that the tissue was literally sticking to my lips. So I love everything about this except the texture. The price is great for all the shades you get but I will see if I can return this as I can’t get past the texture. I wouldn’t recommend this because of the really bad texture. It’s important to note this was available for a limited time.

Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream

I picked up one of these to try because the one thing I did love about the Bite lip products was the intense pigmentation. I picked up the shade “Moscato” and the texture on this is great. This is exactly how a lip cream should be. This is really like liquid lipstick, it’s thick, smooth and very highly pigmented! I love the lip creams and highly recommend them. The packaging is really good as well as it has a sleek see-through tube that allows you to see the actual color. This also comes with a flat doe-foot wand that is very precise and fool-proof which is great when you don’t have access to a mirror and need a touch-up.

Where to Buy: Amazon, Sephora

Price: $28.00

Murad Renewing Eye Cream

I was in the market for a new eye cream and after reading the reviews on Sephora I picked up this one. I have to tell you this is like silk for the eyes! Yes this is pricey but it is worth it! I wish you could feel it, and you get enough that it should last you for a while as it only takes a little bit each time you use it. It is a mouse like cream that is in no way oily and still extremely moisturizing. It always makes me feel like I just got a facial when I use this. The only downside is the steep price tag that comes along with it which may keep me from buying it again.

Where to Buy: Amazon, eBay, Sephora

Price: $75.00

Murad Eye Cream-1

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick

I picked two shades of their new lipstick to try. I decided on “Venom” which is a bright plum, and “Obsessed” which is a bright baby pink shade. I love these lipsticks! They are very pigmented and go on smooth without being drying. The packaging is sleek, modern and looks amazing as well. Look for a full review on these and the lipliners by Leslie coming soon. 🙂

Where to Buy: “Obsessed” – Amazon, eBay, Sephora; “Venom” – Amazon, Sephora

Price: $22.00

Dior Airflash Matte Touch

You all know I love the Diorskin Airflash foundation for special occasions or for when I need a touchup in a hurry. This is basically a spray on powder. So once you have applied your foundation you just spray this powder over your skin for a flawless matte finish. This is great because sometimes when I touch-up my face and I am patting on powder with a puff or brush it will mess up my actual makeup. With this you simply spray it on and don’t touch. I really like this and it is such a great idea! The only downside is the price although it is less expensive as the Airflash Foundation. The other thing is that if you use this daily it won’t last a very long time. However, if you use this only for special occasions it would be worth it.

Where to Buy: Amazon, eBay, Sephora

Price: $49.00

DiorSkin Spray Powder 02

So that’s it for my monthly favorites for August. I am going to try my best to do these every month to showcase some new and exciting products that you may have not heard of or have been wondering about. I hope you all are doing great and as always stay happy and healthy!

XOXO,

Marlena
