The Best Person That You Are Now

If the Baby Allows

It’s Sunday and after a weekend of indulgence I’m not excatly to quote Beyonce “Feeling Myself” – it’s normal but how much of it is down to our own ingrained views of self apperance, rather than the reality that no-one else sees our minor flaws quite the way we do? Kicking off a two part series of self acceptance and realism is Kim from “If The Baby Allows“…

“Stood in front of the mirror, semi-nude (because I can’t quite stomach the full shebang this morning) I look exhausted, and to put it kindly, I’m not exactly wowed by what I see. Nauseated seems fitting.

I run through my mental checklist, Southbound appendages – check, body hair representing Chewbacca – check, skin type: grand canyon/de-hydrated/Sahara/moon crater hybrid – check, citrus fruit inspired derriere – check.

Coincidentally Mel C’s song started playing on the radio “things will never be the same again.” Its moments like this that makes me realise there is indeed no such thing as coincidence and that the universe is gently trying to nudge me towards a realistic state of awareness.

Throughout life there are events that change us, shake us to the core and we come out the other side different. Illness, lifestyle & circumstance changes etc; for me it was IVF, pregnancy, and early motherhood. I came out the other side a dishevelled, tired, bloated and saggy (how?) version of myself. Either that or I had an awesome night out…no it was definitely all of the above, I have the screaming baby in the background to prove it, plus I can clearly remember it ALL!

After my stark realisation, I quickly got dressed to hide the evidence. On went my pregnancy leggings (the ones I swore I would burn the moment after birth) brushed all three remaining post natal hairs on my head and applied a thick layer of concealer under my eyes. I was then ready for coffee guzzling, “I’m fine, I don’t know what you’re talking about” Supermum action.

My Mum often likes to smugly recite “mirror, mirror on the wall, you are your Mother after all” never Mother, never. However, we all know the truth, that we do in some way turn into our mother, but for now I am going to be part of the “not on my nelly, I’m different club” until I eventually give in and let the Mum symptoms implode on me. But up to that point, I will do my best to refrain from the Mum-sy and attempt to be a “yummy mummy” cringey I know.

This doesn’t come without its challenges: time restraints being a big factor, just try a full manicure routine with a snot filled, colic suffering, insomniac kid in your presence – go on I dare you. In case you are not feeling brave, I will summarise what happens with two words: tears and smears.

The other big challenge is comparison.

Fast forward a few years and I should be well on my way to yummy flat tummys-ville right? In fact I should’ve signed up for the Victoria’s Secret show by now. Just look at Heidi Klum, five weeks after giving birth she was back on the catwalk in a bikini, flat tummy, glowing locks, no stretchmarks perfect skin – that is exactly the standard I should be aiming for. That is what everyone is expecting of me: my children, husband, family, society, my sisters friend that I said hi to once, the woman who has twins and is coping way better than I am, the postman, the next door neighbour – everyone. Even the dog gives me a disappointed look If I attempt to head out the door with a greasy haired mop, poor effort Kim. If Heidi can do it, so can I?

NEWS FLASH – it doesn’t quite work like that. In fact it sounds pretty ridiculous doesn’t it? Yet most of us lay on the pressure and compare ourselves to others in some way or another, don’t we? My answer to this? Get a grip love. Okay slightly harsh but on some level I mean it. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter? Sure it’s great to make an effort but why give yourself a hard time about it? It’s all about perspective. Change your perspective and be the best person that you are now. Not what you were, or what you think you should be, but who you are now. Whoa I just came over all dizzy with that sudden rush of guru, and it has hit me that being the best you really is all you can be.

So that is exactly what I am doing, changing my perspective, and I’ve realised that as nice as it is to look good, feeling good works so much better. If painting my nails, wearing red lipstick and having pamper rituals makes me feel good then so be it. I am what I am, I will do my best (Brownies honour) and that’s it – this “radical theory” applies to everyone whatever your story.

Not comfortable with your figure? Wear what makes you feel good. Going through a bad skin phase? Decorate those beautiful eyes. Having a bad hair week day? Spend time on those talons that everyone admires. What I am trying to say is we all have areas that we don’t like, and we all have areas that we do like – and as for those “not so good” areas, well we can work on them can’t we? No harm in trying now is there.

I’m not quite in the realms of “I’m proud of my tiger stripes” I am however okay with them, they are there for good, so no point in stressing about it. The best I can do is treat them, maybe even exercise (chortle) for tightening and then get over it. Sorry not so guru there – but to some degree we do have to let it go, embrace the good and move on. ”

Touche Éclat and my YSL “Awake Face” | AD

YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint Foundation Review

A very radiant face for you, today, using YSL’s relaunched Touche Éclat Le Teint foundation. The new Touche Éclat Le Teint has been reformulated in response to customer feedback to provide the same glowy finish but with a more comprehensive coverage – it’s perfect for me when I have limited time (erm, every day) but want a radiant and flawless finish. I love a very natural look, but looking after the baby and trying to fit in all of my work does leave me looking rather dull and knackered and so I welcome a foundation that manages to lift my complexion as well as hiding any unevenness and darkness around the eyes. An “awake face”, if you will.

I’ve gone in with all guns blazing, here, and not only used the Touche Éclat Le Teint foundation but primed my skin with the Touche Éclat Blur Primer, balanced out my sallowness with the Touche Éclat Neutralizers and added extra brightness beneath the eyes and brows with the original, iconic Touche Éclat pen. Blimey. Here’s a before-and-after, taken in daylight:

before and after

You can see that the various Touche Éclats really do bounce back a gorgeous, diffused glow – this isn’t surface shimmer or sheen, but a proper light-reflecting action. I’m pretty sure that when I was on a shoot with YSL a couple of years ago, the slogan for Touche Éclat was something along the lines of “eight hours of sleep with just one click” (or similar!) and it really does work as a cosmetic antidote to tiredness. If only it could work that kind of magic on the inside of my head as well as the outside. I suppose that’s what coffee is for, though I don’t drink it – never even sipped one!

I started off with the Touche Éclat Blur Primer to smooth out my skin and prep it for the rest of the base and then I went in with the Neutralizers in Violet and Apricot. I have to admit to getting a bit silly with the neutralizers and drawing a sort of cat’s whiskers pattern on my face, but I was trying to amuse the baby, so.

ruth crilly beauty blog

I’m well-versed in the wonders of an apricot or peach-toned corrector – brilliant for under the eyes – but was sceptical about the violet. For sallowness? I had never come across that before. Luckily, because I had scribbled it all over my face, it worked really well – the cool tone seems to add a very clean brightness to the skin.

And then to the foundation: I use shade BR20 in the Touche Éclat Le Teint. (In the summer months I’d be a 30, I think, but I’m still in winter mode.) In the photo above I’m buffing the foundation in using the YSL Y-Brush, which is for getting a very full coverage, but for a lighter effect I usually blend with fingertips. No need for a separate concealer with this, but I did dot some Touche Éclat Slogan Pen beneath my eyes and brows to really brighten up any shadows.

YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint Foundation Review

Important to note, with the Touche Éclat pen, that you should pat-pat-pat the product into the skin and not swipe. It seems like a long-winded way of doing things, but I promise that proper application pays off. It’s not like a big thick concealer that will sit on the skin even if you wipe it about; it’s a sheer fluid that needs to be delicately settled so that it can reflect the light properly. Think of it as a fine veil that sits over the skin – it can be applied over foundation, over a concealer if you have very dark circles or just onto bare skin for a subtle, non-shimmery highlight.

After my army of Touche Éclats I plumped out my lips with the amazing Rouge Volupté Shine lip colour in shade 44. I’m new to this Oil-in-Stick formula but it’s love at first use, for me; a cushiony-soft formula that feels moisturising and luxurious to apply.

To finish off, I added a bit of a flush to my cheeks with YSL’s Fusion Ink Blush, blending it in with my fingertips for a natural, healthy look.

I’d like to say “and that’s all”, but this look hasn’t exactly been minimalist – I have utilised all of YSL’s magical brighteners in my quest for the ultimate “awake face”. And I shall be utilising all of these again next week when – wait for it! – I will be at the YSL counter in John Lewis, London Oxford Street, waiting to meet any of you who fancy popping by! It’s my first meet-up in over a year so you’ll have to excuse me if I bore you all to death about my baby. I promise to talk about beauty too. Ha.

I will be at the YSL Beauty counter in John Lewis, Oxford Street from 4pm until 8pm on Tuesday 17th May and readers who stop by will be colour matched and then receive a seven day sample of the new foundation to take away. There will also be YSL makeup artists on hand for makeovers and bubbles – I’ll be partaking in both of those things! I can’t wait to see you, old readers and new.

You can find all of the products used above at ylsbeauty.co.uk

Which Supplements Should I Be Taking?

supplements for health

I must tell you that I get thoroughly confused when it comes to supplements. No longer is a simple multivitamin enough; a new superfood or magical health-improving tablet seems to be added to the long list of nutritional “must-haves” every week. And I used to be really sceptical about them, until I saw the benefits first-hand of including, for example, Chia Seeds and Goji Berries in my smoothies or alkalising supplements in my juice. Clearer skin, less bloating, a general feeling of wellness and vitality… (My biggest scepticism of all was kicked firmly to the curb this year, too, when I started on a program of Chinese Herbs with John Tsagaris, TCM specialist, and saw my health problems do a literal “about turn”. More on that later on this year, I have a super-post planned! But suffice to say that the sneering cynicism I used to have for natural remedies and also alternative medicine has been all but banished.)

So I’m no longer sceptical about most of these supplements; what I am is bewildered. Which ones are helpful? Which ones are a load of – to use the official word – bollocks? Are there certain supplements that we can all benefit from, regardless of age or constitution, or do they need to be carefully prescribed after a lengthy look at our lifestyles and perceived ailments?

I asked Chris James to talk through his new supplements range and explain, in the simplest terms, what they can do for the body. I’m already a fan of Chris’s health approach. I met him about a year ago and thought that he had some kind of special lighting following him around – he was literally glowing with health. It was ridiculous. And I always try to listen to people who practise what they preach but don’t come across as completely bonkers or scarily evangelical. You may have heard of Chris James’ amazing Mind and Body Cleanse; it’s a twelve-day program that uses a clever combination of supplements, diet changes and cleansing agents to help your body to rejuvenate and get rid of toxins. I keep meaning to set aside a time to do it, but have been useless at finding a date and committing! If I manage to, then you’ll be the first to know about it…and if you want to try the Mind and Body Cleanse, there’s more info at SpaceNK here.

which supplements should I take

Me: Many people are scared of supplements, especially ones that aren’t the straightforward “multivitamins” that they see in the supermarket or in Boots. How do we know what we should be taking? How do we separate the good from the bad?

Chris: “I agree, to the casual observer the vitamin aisle can be a confusing, crowded and overwhelming place. Many years ago, I used to believe that if you eat well, you shouldn’t need supplements, however this is not taking things like soil depletion into account. Even if you eat 100% organically, wear sandals and organic cotton thai-fisher pants with a Yoga mat slung over your shoulder, you have to understand these days supplements are essential health-boosters that can help fill in nutritional gaps and protect your body against the occasional diet slip-up, especially taking into account the modern pace of life.

While I recommend everyone eat whole, preferably organic foods, I also believe that high-quality supplements are essential. While they won’t make up for a bad diet, you can think of them as your nutritional workshop at the ready, standing with screwdriver in hand ready to make those quick tweaks, fixes and adjustment to your internal engine – to make sure that your body is running as healthily and beautifully as possible.

If you are struggling to cope against a tide of new and exotic products and brands flooding the supplementation marketplace, “Bee Poo, anybody?” you’re not the only one! So, I have broken down the framework for your supplemental regime into these four key essential areas – the Fantabulous Four:

  1. Blue Green Algae. Most people will benefit from a blue-green algae to alkalise the system. The modern western diet – lots of over processed meat, eggs, dairy, and alcohol, and not enough vegetables – is predominantly acid forming. Human beings have the same pH as Sea water (7.3 / 7.4); prolonged eating of acid forming foods will contribute to acidosis of the blood stream and increased inflammation. What does this mean? Basically without skirting round the edges, acidosis of the bloodstream and the inflammation that this creates in the body is responsible not just for poor skin and premature ageing, but eventually the symptoms of poor health too. So a long term focus to eating alkalised foods, systematic bi-annual cleansing of the body, supplemented with blue green algae will help to keep the system alkaline. You can buy the above in either powder or frozen form, and to add to soups, salads, smoothies, and juice made from leafy green veg. As one of the most alkalising foods, blue green algae, such as you will find in Gorgeous Greens restores a healthy pH.
  1. A Good quality Multi Vitamin. Multi vitamins, taken daily, should include a full complement of vitamins and trace minerals which assist in bone formation, energy production, and help maintain blood alkalinity.   Make sure that your multi vitamin contains a full compliment of VitC, VitD3, Zinc and Magnesium. We need magnesium as it is the last nutrient to form in fruit/veggies when they ripen on the vine. We pick them early to travel far afield. Also make sure that the multi vitamins have good quality B complex including Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5 B6, & B12. B Complex creates and sustains your body’s energy supply by helping to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The busy B’s activities keep heart health and immunity humming.   Small doses of the B’s are also a great treatment for a headache, stress, tiredness, mood swings and menstrual disorders. In fact, with With B vitamins involved in so many of the body’s procedures, it’s easy to see how you can come up wanting on the B chart. This is particularly key if like me you are a vegetarian which might be short on B’s in your everyday diet.

        3. A Good Quality Probiotic. Probiotics are designed to optimise your gut health and support your digestive function. Probiotics enhance nutrient absorption and immune function. For everyday use what you need is a high quality and gentle probiotic. There has been too much of an emphasis in         recent years on numbers of different strains in probiotics. As a result, probiotics have become too complex for everyday life. Brilliant Biotic is a special high quality formulation that has been created with this in mind – real health and beauty begins in the gut!

chris james supplements review

     4. Glutathione. Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants our bodies produce. It plays an important role in getting rid of heavy metals, reducing free radicals, and supporting the immune function, which are all very worthy, anti wrinkling pursuits! However degenerative illness, toxic exposure, stress and aging deplete natural stores of glutathione, and our ability to produce it. In fact Low glutathione levels have been linked to every major aging process in the human body. So fight back with supplementation – and help keep your energy levels higher, for longer! It’s a no-brainer!”

Thank you Chris. It’s much easier to understand supplements when you break them down like that! And now I have a little quiz for you; two very common lifestyle ailments for you to help relieve. What would you recommend for the following (over-indulged!) circumstances?

1) Post-holiday stomach. You’ve overeaten and had a little too much wine and just feel generally toxic. What’s best to take?

“If you’ve overeaten and are suffering from toxic overload or if you are looking to get svelte and lose the excess flab before your holidays, you could do far worse than do my proven “12 Days” Cleanse. Not only will you lose some of your unwanted flab, you will also feel energized and uplifted.”

2) Hangover situation. Any tips?

“Green (Shrek) Smoothie: kids go crazy for it!!

It doesn’t look good, but it works. It’s a fast, easy, natural and delicious way to get a big dose of vitamins and minerals into your body.

This is how you make it:

You will need:

  • 1-2 bananas
  • peaches
  • mango
  • a couple handfuls of spinach
  • water
  • ice (if desired)

Add enough water to blend and enjoy, that’s it! Forget the dehydrating morning latte and get the glow with a Green Smoothie instead.”

Many thanks to Chris for sharing his words of healthy wisdom; you can find his new supplements, including the Brilliant Biotic, Gorgeous Greens and Magical Multi at Urban Retreat. If you’d like to read more about making green juices and smoothies, take a look at my post here. I need to quiz Chris some more about supplements like Aloe (good for the stomach, apparently) and I’m also going to give all of the above a whirl, so I’ll be back with another post to let you know how I got on. Do any of you take supplements? Which ones? Or are you a big sceptic and rolling your eyes at this very moment? Let me know!

Sunday Tittle Tattle: A Dog, A Cat and a Kayak.

holiday kinsterna hotel

1) Hurrah! The Sunday Tittle Tattle is back. I’m back. Part of me wishes that it was still in Greece, but it’s good to start the New Year feeling relaxed and healthy and positively brimming with Vitamin D. (“NEW YEAR?” I hear you screech, “what the hell is that woman on about?” And I get you; it’s September, not January. But does nobody else still think in terms of school years? I have never quite managed to kick the habit, fifteen years after leaving sixth form (oh God). I suppose I then did Uni for many years, on and off, and my Mum and brother both teach, so they think in school years… Tell me I’m not the only one that does this? I find September to be far more cathartic in terms of “new starts” than January could ever be. The revitalising effects of the summer, Christmas to look forward to.. Discuss, comment, tell me your thoughts.) Where was I? Brimming with Vitamin D! Yes. I have a few more holiday posts to go and then I’ll shut up about it.

incurably curious blog

2) I have been catching up on one of my favourite blogs, Incurably Curious. Have I told you about this blog before? It’s so bloody funny, I actually find myself blurting out weird shout-laughs if I read it on the train. If you ever need cheering up, click on over and read through the archives – the review of Fifty Shades of Grey is just spot-on.

3) So many of you have been chomping at the bit for pet pictures, so here they are: Mr Bear rolling on a rug (above) and Dexter wearing a cardigan. Kind of.

4) Also, here’s me in a Kayak:

ruth crilly in a kayak

Mr AMR bought this earlier on in the year and said that he would use it every day to go up and down the river in front our house. So far he has been in it twice. So I am commandeering it and shall be learning how to kayak. Really, really fast. I did five minutes the other day and was knackered beyond belief so I’m guessing it’s pretty good exercise. If anyone has any kayaking tips, pray share. I’m all over the shop at the moment, zig-zagging around the river like some kind of demented Outward Bound instructor.

5) Sorry sorry sorry to the Max Factor lipstick winners; I forgot to post the prizes before I went on holidays! It’s at the top of my list for things to remember on Monday. Your lippies will be with you soon!
