Square Eyes and Drastic Dog Shaving…

nowtv email

1) Goddamn you NowTV and your continuing encouragement of television-watching marathons: not only have you started showing the American series Girls, which I have always been keen to get started on, but you keep sending me emails that – if I didn’t know better – could be written by Satan’s very own hand. Listen to this for evil temptation, extract taken from their latest quasi-Satanic “bulletin” mail-out:

“Resisting sugary treats, spending hours in the gym…it all sounds like hard work to us. So why not kick-start the New Year by getting stuck into a gripping new season or Box Set?”

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? “Tired of being healthy and having a long life in front of you? Why not spark up a fag and down a litre bottle of meths as you get stuck into forty-eight episodes of Elementary*?” My eyes are literally square and it has reached the point where I feel a bit sick when I hear the Elementary theme tune. Also, I hear Lucy Liu’s voice in my sleep. (*Elementary, as if you didn’t know, my dear Watson, is the US Sherlock Holmes series starring Jonny Lee Miller. See here.)

shaved cockapoo

2) Drastic Dog Shaving. Oh dear. There’s no let up for poor Dexter, who spent so long lying down when he was poorly and then having his harness permanently on (to keep his “cone of shame” from coming loose) that he was a huge matted mess down one side. We couldn’t very well have only one side of him shaved so it all had to come off at the groomers, and now he looks half the size and like some kind of strange, new-born alien sheep. Also, and I know that this is “TMI”, but the shaving has made his you-know-what look disproportionately large (Dexter knows all the tricks!) and it dongs around all over the place making me feel nauseous. Grow, dog-hair, grow!

mr bear the cat

3) Mr Bear: his usual Lord of Plushness self. Check out his look of utter disdain – you wouldn’t catch him flaunting his wotsit about, oh no!

Soothing Skincare for Sore and Sensitive Eyes…

sensitive eye products

I used to get very sore and sensitive eyes when I was a fully-jobbing-globe-trotting fashion model – layers and layers of black eyeliner and smudged-in shadow and eyelash glue and whatever else they bunged onto my lids would play absolute havoc with my skin. And I hadn’t really had sore eyes in ages until the other day, when I was trying out makeup looks and had layers and layers of black eyeliner on, and smudged-in shadow, and eyelash glue and – you get the picture. There’s a definite theme here: lots of eyemakeup = sore eyes. For me, at least.

So I pulled out some old tried-and-tested products in an attempt to soothe and improve – and made a new skincare discovery at the same time. All of the below are brilliant at pushing the reset button on sore undereyes and eyelids. They’re great to have on standby even if you usually prefer something a little more active and hardcore, and they’re not just for heavy makeup-wearers, either. Hayfever sufferers, those who cry easily, people who stare at the computer for too long: all will benefit from having the following in their bathroom cabinets…

beauty skincare for sensitive skin

Liz Earle’s Eyebright Soothing Eye Lotion – £13.25 here. Great as an impromptu mask – just soak two cotton wool pads and place over hot, swollen eyes. I like to use it after proper eye makeup remover, just to get rid of any oily residue and soothe the skin. Brilliant in the summer, even more brilliant if you keep it in the fridge.

soothing organic eye cream

Pai’s Echium & Argan Organic Eye Cream, £30 here. I discovered this a few years ago and – when it came to sore-eye-treating – never looked back. I’ve actually used small amounts of this cream to remove eye makeup after particularly lengthy and intense beauty shoots, when everything else just felt too much, and I’ve layered it on more thickly as an overnight mask . If you really have very sensitive skin and struggle to find anything gentle enough, I would definitely recommend you give this a try.

bioderma sensibio eye contour gel review

Bioderma’s Sensibio Eye Contour Gel, £14.20 here. This is my new discovery, and a mighty fine one it is too. I was instantly wowed – a light, readily-absorbed gel-cream (it’s not a transparent gel, as you might expect) that packs an incredible punch when it comes to soothing and comforting the skin. Cooling but not tightening, this goes straight into my in-flight beauty bag.

sensitive skin cleansing cream

Another tried-and-tested sensitive skin staple; Weleda’s Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion – £8.55 with free delivery here. This very delicately cleanses the skin without leaving any greasy residue – in fact my face always feels far fresher than I expect it to after rinsing this away. I’ve also used it with cotton wool pads when I have been travelling and still, no unpleasant residue. I have no complaints whatsoever about this little cleanser and I love that it’s in a travel-friendly tube – though I wish there was a larger size available too, because I go through this stuff like nobody’s business!

Budget Beauty: Best-Buy Makeup

ruth crilly and vivianna does makeup

I really need to get some kind of video-posting system going; I publish a video and then it takes me about five weeks to write about it! I am mid-way through a website re-structure (if you ever come to the site during the witching hours (2am-4am) you’ll no doubt see all kind of weird experiments happening with the layout. I try to do it in quiet times so that I can learn the new system and then put it all back to the old one until I’ve worked out what the hell I’m doing!) and this new structure should make it easier just to post videos up without too much blurb. Then you can see them when they’re still new and fresh, rather than when my hair colour’s changed and the leaves have started to fall from the trees..

Saying all of that, I’m not too tardy with this one; Budget Beauty Best-Buy Makeup with Anna from Vivianna Does Makeup. I’m sure you’ve watched Anna before – Anna also happens to be best friends with Lily, who you saw last week in my nails video. Anna and I are distantly related, (small world), so do watch the video and tell us what our relationship is. We’re having quite a lot of fun trying to work it out!

We filmed a video for Anna’s channel too, you can find the link for that below the video screen along with the product details.

ARGH! There’s so much L’Oreal stuff here: completely unintentional, we both just brought our favourite budget makeup with us and that’s how it turned out!

Top Five: Cleansers.

This Top Five has got to have been one of the trickiest to pick yet, I didn’t realise I loved so many cleansers! Clearly I have a problem.
Cleansing your skin properly is the first step to healthy, clear skin. These may be just wash off products but they can still pack a punch with lots of lovely skin benefits, it’s also important to choose a good cleanser as picking any old wash could leave your skin irritated and dry. I like to choose formulas that are gentle and nourishing, clearing and sometimes exfoliating or brightening too. With my skin being combination it can range from being spotty and oily one day, to Sahara desert dry the next, so having a few different cleansers to choose from lets me go with the flow and treat whatever surprise my skin has in store for me that day.

The Creamy Dreamy Gel

The Josh Rosebrook Moisturising Cleanser (soon to be renamed the Complete Moisture Cleanse with a slightly tweaked formula) is the perfect cleanser for those who want to use a gel, but don’t want their skin to dry out. Aloe, honey, African black soap, a blend or organic oils and herbal infusions (and much more) seem to give this cleanser super powers. It’s so good. The gel has a silky, slippery texture and it doesn’t foam at all, it removes makeup well but the ingredients are so nice that I only ever used in the morning or as a second cleanse in the evening, it’s way too nice to waste on makeup and makes skin feel petal soft.
I haven’t used this in a few months now as my bottle was past it’s use-by as it lasted me so long (luckily I only had about 1cm left) and I really miss it. I’m going to wait for the new formula which has a few added ingredients for skin clearing, exciting! You can pick this cleanser up here from A Beautiful World, the only current UK stockist (which is always surprising to me as this range is SO. GOOD. Why is not available in more places?!).

The Super Simple Lotion

This is my second tube of the Weleda Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion, a super simple cream that’s basically just water, almond oil and a bit of emulsifier. This is my travel companion, sore skin fixer and when-all-else-fails pick. It feels light on the skin, removes makeup and can be washed away with water if you use it as a quick cleanse in the morning (I would say always use a cloth in the evenings if you’ve been wearing makeup). My favourite part, though? it’s under a tenner and smells like a bakewell tart.

My Favourite Oil

I was never really into oil cleansing until the No21 Light Cleanser from Vedani Botanicals changed everything for me. Hemp, hazelnut, tamanu and sesame oil are the dream team here, together they make up something beautiful; an oil that feels lightweight, is hardworking (it removes every scrap of makeup) and transforms skin from bad to brilliant with those balancing and clearing plant oils. The deceptively small 50ml bottle has lasted me months with regular use of about 4-5 pumps at a time and my skin has improved with each and every use (I use this for both removing makeup and cleansing skin). Pick it up for £22 here.

The Pink Jelly Balm

Everyones’ favourite and kind of a cult classic, but for a very good reason. The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel is the most high-tech of the bunch here, with a savvy emulsifying formula, makeup melting properties and a host of added vitamins, minerals and pumpkin enzymes to resurface and restore. The pink gel/balm hybrid melts into an oil once massaged onto skin – dissolving the days grime and eating away any dead skin cells, too. I prefer to use this to remove makeup as it’s just so easy to wash away when the addition of water transforms the oil into a milk that rinses clean. The ingredients are powerful, especially on clean skin – I’ve used this as a quick mask, left for just 2-3 minutes so the ingredients can do some good and when rinsed away skin has a pinky perky glow that only comes from a good scrub or peel. My only niggle is the packaging, it’s pretty but also hella bulky and impossible to tell when you’re coming to an end. It’s £29.50 for 100ml here.

The No-Fuss Black Clay Soap

I know, I know, a bar of soap? For your face?! This is no ordinary bar of soap, this is an expertly crafted speciality bar of Osmia Organics soap, yes, for your face. This doesn’t leave skin feeling stripped, instead, it cleans and softens with coconut milk, dead sea mud, and avocado oil. This is my second bar of the stuff and I just love it, it totally clears up my skin and is especially good for perioral dermatitis. Sometimes I just want to wash and go, without the need for flannels and face massages and this is the one. A perfect morning face cleanser. My only problem is it’s not available anywhere in Europe or the UK, so it’s high import fees or getting lucky with finding it in a beauty box like I did the second time around. Best shipping I’ve found is direct from Osmia Organics or Beauty Heroes.
And that’s my top five! Do we have any of the same favourites? or have I inspired you to try some new cleansers today? let me know… 😉

Beauty Products I’ve Finished Off (AKA The “Empties” Video)

ruth crilly model recommends

Some of you may be bored to tears at the prospect of watching me talk through a series of empty plastic shower gel bottles and toothpaste tubes, others may be overjoyed. Whichever camp you’re in, you may find it quite interesting to see which products have actually been used up to the very last dregs. I’ll be honest; I tend to abandon products that don’t agree with me very quickly. They go straight into the Sin Bin, or they get passed on to friends or relatives, depending on quite how crap they are. Life is far too short to struggle along with a soap that makes your shins dry or a face cream that smells of rotten fish…

So you won’t really see any strong “dislikes” in this little roundup, just minor “pleh” sorts of sounds. (I probably wouldn’t buy the A’Kin body wash again, despite it having a lovely summery smell, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it. It just didn’t excite me enough to rush onto FeelUnique and re-order. “Pleh.”)

This video actually went up the week before last; I totally forgot to post it up here on the website. Sorry – brain like sieve, etc etc.

Links to stuff below the video screen – please click here if you can’t see the video and a new page on Youtube will miraculously open.
