Dior Tie Dye: Tan Glow Enhancing Powder

dior tie dye blush glow enhancing powder

I don’t mind telling you that this blush and I got off to a bit of a rocky start. I applied it all over my face like a maniac, thinking that I’d given myself a “healthy glow” when in fact I’d turned myself orange. (Cue Mr AMR “what have you done to your face? It’s completely orange!) Had I been a professional, I would have started off gently-gently to see what kind of tone this powder imparted – it is, after all, labelled a “Tan Glow Enhancer” and is supposed to “impart a sunny glow”. And a sunny glow over the whole face is perhaps not wise.

When I got to grips with the Dior Tie Dye Edition Tan Glow Enhancing Powder (and breathe) I realised that I liked it best when worn as a blush. Perhaps on more tanned skin it would look great whacked on all over as a complexion enhancer but it’s possibly just a little bit too bright for me to use in that way! Here’s my skin before using the Tie Dye Powder:

I like this glow! It’s certainly very summery and yes, I can see how it would enhance a tan. Possibly the Pink Sunrise version would work better with my complexion, but the Coral Sunrise, demonstrated, does have a very pleasing apricot hue. It does something clever to the skin, but I can’t quite pinpoint what. Revives it? Stops a “sunkissed” tone from looking too flat and brownish? What do you think?

You can find the Dior Tie Dye Blush / Tan Enhancing Powder at Escentual.com here – it’s £36.

I Spent £100 on Candles I’ll Never Burn

Le Labo Candles New York Review

I know, I know you think I’m an idiot and to be fair you aren’t far off but in this instance, it is not a moment of idiocy to blame, rather it all comes down to me being a nostalgic fool. As a little ‘un (well little-r, I never quite grew over the 5ft mark) whenever I went on holiday, I’d send home a postcard and bring home a suitcase of mementos for my scrapbook. I’ve long since given up on scrapbooking but still enjoy nothing more than a forever token reminder, of my time spent in a new place; unfortunately for me this has now morphed into pricey Le Labo candle habit.

Le Labo Candles New York Review

A Le Labo candle may seem like an odd choice to commemorate any event, let alone a short trip abroad but let me explain my reasoning: first of all, you don’t need me to tell you that the complex yet divine fragrances of the Le Labo house are forever appealing – special occasion or not – but did you know that Le Labo offer custom labels? No me neither, well until July of last year that is. Essentially any Le Labo cologne or candle, can be decorated with a small and perhaps meaningful message of your own; I choose to go with the address I stayed at both times I stayed in NYC in 2016. Two different locations, two luxurious scents and two very contrasting set of memories, each of which come alive when I open the box containing said candle. Yes I know life is for living and if you pay £50 for a luxury candle, you should damn well light it and enjoy it; one day I will, perhaps when I have a place of my own to decorate.

At the moment I have Le Labo Cedre 11 which is a smoky but sweet woody scent – if Le Labo could perhaps consider launching this as a cologne, I’d wear nothing else for the rest of my life. My other addition is Le Labo Cologne 17 which is a crisp, clean and almost aquatic scent that does have a certain masculine quality. I’ll be the first to admit that Le Labo is not cheap and as such I don’t recommend purchasing blindly – that and denying yourself the entire Le Labo experience should be considered sinful.

Le Labo Candles New York Review

As someone fairly new to the Le Labo world of fragrance there are a few additions yet to be added to my shelf. When I go back to NYC I plan on purchasing Le Labo Tubereuse as it I exclusive to the city – there are 8 other location based exclusive scents across the world that I slowly but surely plan on collecting, one by one.

Some people collect stamps, I collect beautifully scented jars and bottles – that maybe, just maybe one day I’ll finally give into temptation and burn. Maybe.

In the U.K you can find Le Labo online via Liberty – link
In the U.S you can find Le Labo online via Barneys – link

The Sexy Comfy Non-Wired Bra…

Wacoal Embrace Lace Soft Bra

I’m in bra limbo at the moment. Apparently I can’t wear an underwired bra because I’m still breastfeeding, but I only feed first thing in the morning and last thing before the baby’s bedtime, so – in effect – during the hours I’m wearing clothes, I’m not strictly a breastfeeder. And I don’t want to have to wear a nursing bra, with its clip-down bits and wide straps, if I don’t absolutely need to; I’m desperate to get back into something lacy and lovely.

There seems to be a real shortage of attractive non-wired non-nursing bras: I realised this when I was pregnant and wanted a soft bra without drop down cups. Because why an earth would you want drop down cups on your bra if you don’t have a baby yet? And what about people who want a soft, non-wired bra who are not pregnant, have no intention of getting pregnant and have never been pregnant? What about if they just want to be comfy, or can’t wear an underwire for some reason, or like the shape that a more relaxed-fit bra gives them?

I think that Wacoal’s Embrace Lace must be the best non-wired bra I’ve found. I actually spotted it before Christmas in Harvey Nic’s and thought that it looked incredibly sexy – plunging at the front but with such a delicate shape and pretty lace detailing. At that time I was still feeding about eight times a day (seems crazy looking back) and non-nursing bras were totally off my radar, but since I’ve cut down on feeds I can get a bit more adventurous in the lingerie department.

Wacoal Embrace Lace Soft Bra

Now listen; Wacoal’s Embrace Lace will not offer a supreme amount of support – you can probably tell that, if you have big knockers and an experienced eye, just by looking at the picture. It’s not going to keep you in check if you’re climbing Snowdon or doing a Jazzercise class or even vigorously whisking cream for a pavlova. This, if you have an ample bosom, is what I would call a “fair weather” bra. It needs to be treated in the same way you’d treat a pair of high-ish heels; no running for buses and be extra vigilant when drinking. Bountiful boobs have a habit, if you’re not careful (ie you jog down the stairs to catch the postman) of working their way out of the middle and breaking free from the restraints. But for general swanning about, for dinners and shopping and romantic dates and bedroom antics (relatively sedate ones), it’s a winner.

This bra comes in loads of different shades and variations – my favourite is the one I’ve pictured above (it’s at John Lewis) but there’s black with a cream trim, hot pink, pale pink, nude… The plunging neckline is incredibly useful if you’re dressing in something particularly low-cut – there aren’t many “solution” non-wired bras out there – and the wide lace trim looks very chic and expensive when you catch a glimpse of it through a blouse or dress.

There are no cup sizes with this bra – just chest measurements, so 32, 34, 36, 38. My bra size is around a 32E but I wear a 36 in this – I can’t even fit one breast into the size 32! – so it’s worth ordering a couple to get it right. You can find some Embrace styles at John Lewis here and others at Figleaves here. They are £38 each but at the time of editing this, Figleaves have 30% off if you use the code TREAT30. Not sure how long that’s valid for I’m afraid, I just spotted it on their homepage!

La Petite Robe Noir Palette

Guerlain Palette World Duty Free

Somehow, I never quite have enough time to really, properly shop at airports – usually, I’m physically running to get on the plane in time (don’t even start me on my Dublin airport disaster where I somehow – I have no idea how – went through a wrong door and ended up in baggage reclaim which meant I had to run the entire circuit of the airport all over again…) but I know that some people sensibly leave an extra time allowance to browse the shops. So if you’re one of those super organised people, then you might spot this little gem from Guerlain – La Petite Robe Noir Palette – available at World Duty Free.

Inside the casing, there is a mirror, blush, three shadows, a mini gloss, a powder brush, and a perfumed face powder. Travel exclusives are made for airport shopping only so there’s no chance of finding them elsewhere, and actually, it seems that brands are allowed to be a little more playful for that market, as is the case with La Petite Robe Noir Palette. It’s £51 at World Duty Free.

WDF Price £51.00 (TRX)

Melvita Day Cream: Cheerful and Uplifting

Melvita Nectar de Roses Hydrating Day Cream review

A jolly little day cream for you: Melvita’s Nectar de Roses Infusion. You might think “jolly” a slightly odd word to use to describe a moisturiser, but it’s highly appropriate in this case – the sugared rose smell of the Hydrating Day Cream is just so cheerful and uplifting.

Nothing too complicated going on here – I tend to bung this on when I’m going to be indoors for most of the day – but it’s nicely moisturising if your skin is on the slightly dry side. Not too greasy, but you definitely feel the effects (it has shea butter in the base, which I find tends to leave a comforting sort of residue) and it leaves my skin nice and plumpy.

I’ve also been slathering this on in between makeup changes if I’ve been trying out a lot of different foundations. It feels quite soothing and it actually sits very nicely beneath the face bases, counteracting the tightness that I can sometimes get when I do too many cleanses in quick succession. (I tend to use cleansing wipes or micellar waters when I’m testing makeup in my studio, due to lack of a sink, so that doesn’t help with my general sense of skin comfort!)

Read: soothing moisturisers for sensitive faces…

For ultra-soothing and balancing and general skin-sorting, I haven’t found anything to beat the MV Organic Skincare Rose Soothing Protective Moisturiser, but I appreciate that it’s a far steeper investment at £77. Though you do get a whopping 70ml. My sister-in-law has seen her hormonal skin quite transformed by stripping back her routine and using MV. If you want to give it a whirl (I used it all the way through pregnancy to try and keep my skin on an even keel) you can find the moisturiser here.

But back to the Melvita (post got a bit gatecrashed there, didn’t it?): plenty of rose going on in this little tube of day cream. Rose extract, rose water, rose oil, and taken from a few different types of rose, too. Jam-packed with rose you could say. Jolly, jolly nice.
