Use Everywhere Balms (and I mean Everywhere)

Use Everywhere Balms

It’s Winter and as such skin is so easily and quickly chapped: be it the lips, hands, feet, elbows or even the cheeks (yes really!) – basically anywhere the icy winter winds can attack, they will. Now I don’t know about you but I don’t have the gumption – nor budget – to be purchasing a hundred and one products to care for all my skin ailments, I would much rather have one multi-tasking product. As variety is the spice of life, I have whittled down my top three “use everywhere balms” so you can get on with the more important things in life, such as finally getting around to watching the Gilmore Girls. No judgement here.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream £26 – link

The original and arguably the best (what can I say I’m a ride or die kinda gal) – yes I am of course talking about Elizabeth Arden’s iconic 8 Hour Cream. This thick, gel-come-balm has saved my skin quite literally, more times than I can count; yes it can be a little greasy but this do-it-all potion, quickly and effectively injects moisture when and where it is most needed. Safe to use anywhere – including the face – Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream offers a blanket of instant hydration and continues to moisturise for up to 8 hours – hence the name. No long haul flight or Winter skin survival kit should be without it, and if ever hesitant about the thicker than average texture, mix a little into your regular product (hand cream, face cream, body lotion – it all works) and apply to the skin for a lighter, less daunting but ultimately the same moisture rich, quick fix. Hyaluronic Hydra-Balm: Get On My Lips

lipstick innocent kiss

By Terry‘s Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm: get on my lips! I’ve been waiting for something like this for months; juicy, plumptious and peachy, sheer enough to be absolutely foolproof to apply, but with just about enough colour to make the whole thing a worthwhile endeavour. Because some tinted balms are so subtle as to be virtually pointless. Or not pointless, just…uninspiring. Or not uninspiring, but more suited to an “at home” day. By Terry‘s Hydra-Balm Lipstick definitely polishes off a makeup look nicely – instant grooming, with the sheen of a lipstick but the soft texture of a hydrating balm. Something you can easily reapply throughout the day to feel as though you’re wearing proper makeup, but without any real commitment.

Shade 2 “Innocent Kiss” is my kind of peach: it’s neither too orange nor too pink. It is, as Goldilocks would say, just right. [Make sure you take that sentence out and replace it with something less sick-makingly-cringeworthy. Don’t forget. ed.] I do enjoy wearing peach and salmon-toned lipsticks – I went a bit crazy for them last year when I was pregnant, have a trawl through these posts – but the shade has to be spot on, otherwise terrible things happen in the face department. For some reason, getting your peach wrong can throw everything completely off-kilter: dark circles look darker, skin looks sallow, upper lips develop a sort of dirty shadow that looks annoyingly like a moustache… I suppose it depends on the texture of the lipstick too – a soft, peachy-cream is going to be perhaps more forgiving than an opaque matte.

No problems with “Innocent Kiss” (apart from the rather strong soapy taste); it’s more peach sorbet than peachy-cream, sheer enough to be flattering on pretty much any skintone, I would have thought. The formula is incredibly hydrating, as you’d expect from the name, and I do actually see something of a plumping effect, which is a bonus. So many lip things are labelled “plumping” and do nothing – there’s a cushiony appearance to my lips when I use the Hydra-Balm. Whether from the hyaluronic acid or simply the sheen making things look fuller I’m not sure, but the effect is definitely there.

It is, however, a pricey little number. I lust after many things from By Terry – the foundations I have always found to be exceptional – but they are very firmly in the “life’s luxuries” category. I have about a dozen friends and friends-of-friends who will never forgive me for getting them hooked on By Terry makeup!

The Skin Radiance Discovery Box.

This is my first time trying the famed Naturisimo Beauty Box. After taking a short break over the New Year period they’re back with this fabulous selection of skincare goodies. What I love most about the Naturisimo Beauty Boxes is that there’s absolutely no commitment as it’s not a subscription and you get to see the contents before you purchase. Every month or so they put together a fab box of items, usually around a theme and they’re always, always sell-outs. The prices of the box vary too, from around £9 to slightly more expensive at £29-ish, but this is always reflected by the contents and they’re always amazing value.

This month’s theme is ‘Skin Radiance’ featuring a collection of skincare perfect for beating the effects of cold weather and reviving lackluster, dry skin to reveal a fresh complexion once more. The box contains 8 picks from higher end, luxury brands and costs £12.95 but is worth £60.

What’s inside:

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Miracle Cleanser (30ml) & Muslin Cloth – I love this light creamy cleanser and this travel size will last you a good amount of time, too.

Caudalie Resveratrol Firming Serum (10ml) – This little serum is worth £15 on it’s own! A water based, high-tech natural serum to help re-create the texture and look of younger skin.

Argentum La Potion Infinie (5ml) – This hydrating universal moisturizer is said to be suitable for all skin types, it helps with everything from blemishes to wrinkles and contains silver hydrosol to regulate skin flora with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Elemental Herbology Vital Glow Overnight Resurfacing Moisturiser (15ml) – I’m always interested in products that resurface skin and increase cell turnover, and this new release from Elemental Herbology is no exception. I’ve only tried it once so far but it was gentle and nourishing, too. Worth £16.

Kae Argaroyal Day Cream (2ml) – Argan oil, immortelle and royal jelly combine to creat this luxe anti-aging cream.

Tata Harper Moisturising Mask (7.5ml) – The full size of this mask costs a whopping £92, so if you’re interested in trying a decent sized sample this is your chance, as it’s worth the cost of the box on its own. I haven’t tried this yet but I can’t wait to give it a go tonight – the formula looks surprisingly thin in consistency when I was expecting a super rich cream, too.

The Organic Pharmacy Gene Express Serum (2ml) – If you thought the Tata mask was pricy, avert your eyes… because this costs £190 for 40ml. Yes. Really. This innovative serum uses gene mapping science to restore skin cells and dramatically improve the appearance of skin.

And that’s the box! Another good one, don’t you think? Will you be treating yourself? Get it here.

Styling my London Look with Karen Millen

karen millen fashion

I have been taking part in quite a lovely little project with Karen Millen*, a kind of “love your city” affair, where I had to style an outfit from the new collection and shoot it on location around London. I also did a nice Q&A about my favourite places to go in the city around Christmastime, and you can see that over on their website if you click here. Answering the Q&A really made me think that I should do more posts about London, seeing as though I have lived and worked there for the past fifteen years or so… I often think, too, that nobody really knows the streets of London more than models – except perhaps taxi drivers and couriers – because we spend so much time traipsing round going to castings and photo-shoots in obscure places. In any one day you might have ten or so appointments, all in different areas of London – SW7 to NW3, back to SW1, to EC2, to E3, to W8, to SE23 and so on and so forth. Pre-iPhone days, when we used to have to rely on the good old A-Z to get us about, models were quite literally experts at finding places. And knowing exactly which tubes would take you where, and whether it was quicker to hop on a bus than take the tube… (It was very rarely a taxi, in those days. We were always broke, new models, waiting for money to come in from the agency.)

Anyway, I’ve gone off on a complete tangent! Here’s the outfit I styled using some pieces from the new collection. I’ve become a bit of a layering fanatic recently, not quite on a “Helena Bonham Carter” level, but nearing it. There’s something very liberating about throwing on clashing textures and prints and colours and it’s something I want to do more of. Mostly using various types of leopard print. You can see that I managed to shoehorn in some leopard print in this outfit – the coat is just absolutely gorgeous. It’s actually quite lightweight and roomy enough to fit a big jumper underneath and I think that it would also look great with black skinny jeans and high boots. Very rock and roll.

Underneath the coat of dreams, a crystal beaded top which I picked out because it felt so festive. I liked that the actual body of the top was quite a casual, sweatshirt affair but then it had this heavy embellishment. I tucked it in to a high-waisted skater skirt which I love; great cut, leg-lengthening and flattering at the waist where it cinches in. It’s very clever! (It’s now in the sale, too, at around half the original price – find it here.) I finished off the look with black tights and Stretch Suede Over the Knee boots, which made me feel very retro and “girl about town”.

What do you think? I love that the boots give a long, lean look to my legs but that the rest of the outfit was quite layered and voluminous! After styling my London outfit, I picked out some of my favourite items from the collection for Karen Millen’s gift guide. I chose a red velvet dress as the gift I’d buy for myself (sends me straight back to childhood – I haven’t worn a velvet dress for about twenty-odd years!) and as a gift for a friend, I chose the sequin pattern dress which has a lovely shape and a good, sexy, party-length hemline.

If you’d like to browse the new Karen Millen collection you can do so online here – my little Q&A session is here. Photos shot at the back of St Paul’s Cathedral, just in case you hadn’t noticed the big dome in the first picture!

Clarins Golden Glow: the Gradual, Customisable Self-Tan

clarins self tanner drops

I can only really say one thing about the Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster and that is get it, get it, get it. As a lover of gradual tanners and a hater of full-on fake tan, these drops, which can be added to any body lotion, serum or oil, are just the most convenient of things. You mix them in with your body product and there’s no resulting biscuit smell, no streaking, just a beautiful golden glow. Follow the instructions included with the drops to ascertain the correct amount you need to add to achieve your desired effect, but don’t worry too much if you go under or over – it’s difficult to get things wrong, unless you slap on half the bottle at once!

I mentioned the Radiance-Plus Golden Glow booster in my skincare favourites video, so have a look at that if you want to hear some waffle to go alongside this post – if you want to take a look at the face version (which I’m guessing is very similar in terms of formulation!) then you can read last year’s post on that here. It’s still one of my top beauty buys ever for summer. Or winter. Whenever, in fact – just a drop in your face serum or moisturiser maintains a healthy, sunkissed glow.

You can find the Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster for Body at Escentual.com here – it’s at the special price of £22.85 rather than the RRp of £26. By the way, I haven’t properly tested the shimmer oil on the right hand side of the picture, I’ll get back to you on that one!
