The New Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gels

The New Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gels Review

Do you like speed reviews? Great because I have been using the new Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gel for a good few days now and I have a few thoughts on it – mainly you should treat yourself immediately – but not quite enough pleasantries for a lengthy and typical of me blog post.

I’ll be entirely honest, I am a fairly new recruit to the world of Jo Malone bath and body products; typically when I splurge in one of their luxurious boutiques, I leave with a cologne…or two and yet the new Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gel has me hooked. A shower gel, really? Yes and I beg that you hear me out.

The Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gels aren’t your bog standard shower gel – they are an experience. As to be expected the first thing that will lure you in, is the heavenly aroma and familiar notes of Jo Malone fragrance, with three scents to choose from, I can safely assume that there will be something for everyone. This is my first dip into the iconic fragrance that is Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin, and let’s just say I finally understand the fuss: a bright, bold yet never overwhelming, sophisticated fruity concoction that is perfect for a refreshing morning shower.

What sets the Jo Malone Exfoliating Shower Gels aside from the rest is that they both cleanse and of course, gently exfoliate the skin using Jojoba beads and Orange peel. Now I’ll be the first to admit that this light body scrub won’t be enough to remove layers of self tanner but it is more than sufficient

for a quick daily polish, that will in turn result in continuously soft and supple skin.

It’s not everyday that I will rave, let alone write about a shower gel but then again it is not everyday that Jo Malone launch a new body treat.

Five Brilliant Overnight Masks…

five best night cream overnight masks

I spend a few nights a week testing out overnight masks. It doesn’t take me the whole night to test them, obviously, I just slap them on (takes approximately twenty seconds) and then go to sleep. It’s one of the easiest jobs in the world, unless there’s a job that just involves going to sleep and not even applying a face mask…

Anyway, I record my results in the morning and jot everything down in my little notebook of face things and then, if I’m not impressed, I move on to the next mask. If I am impressed then I’ll put the mask to one side and test it out a load more times before it joins a little shortlist and then I do a sort of “X Factor Six Chair Challenge” thing, except that there are only five chairs, because, for some reason, it’s always “top five”, isn’t it? Or top ten?

So here are my top five overnight masks. The ones that I find really hydrate and plumpify and leave the skin looking juicy and gorgeous in the morning. Truthfully, I don’t think that there’s much difference between a lot of these overnight masks and a rich night moisturiser, or rich any moisturiser, but two thoughts:

  1. you probably apply a little more of a mask than a night cream, merely because that’s what you do with masks, and so perhaps it’s slower to absorb and the hydrating powers are a little more long-lasting
  2. many of them are much cheaper, per ml, than night creams and appear to do the same job, so who on earth cares? Give me the cheaper option of the same thing any day of the week!

My first mask (and please do watch the video for a bit more info on each of the products) is the Drink Up Intensive from Origins (£24 here). It’s just a little on the perfumed side for me, and I have to say that in terms of lightweight-yet-powerful hydration I find that the Kiehl’s pips it to the post, but it beat a hell of a lot of other masks to make it into the final five! It’s rich but not claggy, leaves the skin soft and I like that it comes in a tube. Easy to travel with.

The Khiel’s Ultra mask (£28 here) is an old favourite – you can read more about it in this post, if you fancy. Very fresh and light in feel, sort of like a cream-gel, you can properly feel the effects of this the next morning. No crazy perfume, just a plain-looking pot of mask that does the trick if your skin is wintery-dry. Good for people who don’t want a heavy cream – perhaps their skin is oily or spot-prone.

Liz Earle’s Superskin Overnight Mask (£42 here) is a new one, both to me and to the beauty market in general. It’s only just hit the shelves, but it was a hit with me from the word go! My skin in the morning after a generous application of this was like post-facial skin. Really. I’ve tested it numerous times since, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke.. My skin felt as though it had been massaged for half an hour with a really good oil – but no massage needed, I just slept! Marvellous. Brilliant for dry, lacklustre skin that needs a bit of an oiling!

The Alpha-H Power Peel is packed full of ingredients such as retinol and glycolic to brighten, tighten and improve the overall appearance of the skin. Great for those with pigmentation, fine lines, adult blemishes, deeper wrinkles, dullness, just about any skin gripe. It’s £54 here – if you want to give your skin a serious boost then this is a wise investment. This is the powerhouse of the bunch – really incredibly effective, with definite overnight results. You’ll notice brighter skin the next day, if you’re paying attention. Wonderful for just about anyone, though it’s advised you sidestep retinol when pregnant…

L’Oreal’s Revitalift Laser Renew Night Cream* is sort of a secret mask, really, because (on my packaging at least) you have to look pretty hard to find the word “mask”! In a way, this just reaffirms my point that there’s little difference between lots of overnight masks and night creams – neither needs to be removed, you just apply and go to sleep whilst the magic happens. Anyway, this is a great affordable option – I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, I’ve been using it since the late spring. Bouncy in texture, it sort of gels to your skin and you still have a little residue in the morning, though it’s not at all greasy. It’s very moisturising and really inexpensive, especially if you find it on offer – at the time of writing, it’s £13.33 at Amazon here.

ASOS Rabbit Print Tights

ASOS Rabbit Print Tights

Even though I can’t see myself wearing these (I do not have legs for white tights!) I still think they’re pretty cute – and who can resist a bunny? In our family, we give gifts at Easter (other than eggs) – I think it was my Grandma that started that particular tradition and we give just a token, really, as a way of not dumping a whole load of chocolate on each other, although we do also give small eggs. Anyway, that over-share is accompanied by the price (£8) and the link to the tights (HERE)!

Kate Spade Watch

Kate Spade Watch

I’m verging on obsessed with Kate Spade right now – all the accessories are stylish and covetable (don’t even start me on Kate Spade shoes) but great quality. I love this pink watch – I haven’t worn a watch since I was at school and this is one of the few times I’ve ever been tempted to start again! It also comes in red, black (boring), nude and orange and it’s £195 (ouch, I know.. but.. it’s Kate Spade!). It’s HERE.

Beckondersgaard Scarf

Becksondersgaard Scarf

As I found to my cost yesterday morning when the weather was gorgeously sunny but blowing a freezing gale in the park, it’s not safe to go scarfless! Becksondersgaard scarves are created by two Danish designers – the scarf above, from last season, has a tiny feather print and I think it’s great for a bargain to leap into spring with. It’s £18 reduced from £39 HERE.

My Burberry: Craving the Dark and Depraved

perfume review

Well I must say that this fragrance has grown on me, if only a little. I couldn’t stand it at first. It’s not my type of perfume at all, but it has caught my attention somehow – perhaps because it’s such a breath of fresh air at a time when many fragrance releases are on the heavier, spicier side, warming up for the dark and chilly months. Considering that My Burberry was an autumn launch, it’s incredibly light and crisp and a bit frivolous, and if I had to match it to a season then without a doubt I’d say Spring. But I suppose that’s neither here nor there, because we’re now in the depths of gloomy winter and no amount of light-hearted sweet pea and freesia and bergamot is going to convince you that the blossoms are on their way out and the baby birds are about to start twittering. My Burberry is simply for those who like to keep things light, fresh and uncomplicated whatever the season – it reminds me of a glass of fizzy Elderflower or one of those posh champagne cocktails with flowers floating on the top.

My Burberry has been created by Francis Kurkdjian, he of Jean Paul Gaultier fame (and his own-line fame and fame from dozens and dozens of incredibly well-known perfumes). I have to say that I was quite surprised when I found that out – I always expect a bit of a dark, sexy edge when Kurkdjian’s involved, but My Burberry  doesn’t seem to have any real base to it. It’s about as safely sparkly as scents get, very airy and dancey and crisp. Those who love very light florals will adore it; women who require more guts from their perfumes will perhaps abhor. I don’t know – I’m sitting on the fence. It’s perfectly adequate as a spritz of something clean and crispy, but I can’t imagine it stopping people dead in their tracks, wondering what on earth hit them…

Thoughts? Lovers of light florals and crisp, fresh scents, give me your verdict! I have to say that I do love the bottle styling – incredibly heavy glass, lid like an oversized tortoiseshell button – but scent-wise, I’m craving some dark and depraved base notes. Mind you, if it had those then it would be a completely different perfume! Mr Bear, as you can see above, greatly approves of My Burberry. He is modelling a personalised version (made for my assistant, you can have it done for free when you order here) but it’s also available uncustomised – Escentual.com stock My Burberry starting at £45 for 30ml.

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Brace Yourselves.

baby bump 38 weeks

1) Could this be the last Sunday Tittle Tattle for a while? Brace yourselves: it’s entirely possible! I’m 39 weeks pregnant tomorrow and so really, Baby AMR could emerge at any time. (I like the word “emerge” rather than “pop out” – it sounds gentler and far less painful. Like the head will just serenely appear and we will all smile and coo and I can play The Circle of Life from The Lion King through my iPod speakers. Brilliant.) Anyway; as always I will endeavour to provide you with regular, brilliant quality (ha!) content, and I have loads of interesting posts and videos scheduled in advance, it’s just the Sunday Tittle Tattles that may prove to be a pain. I like them to be current and so I write them only a day or two in advance – that may not be possible if I’m simultaneously trying to learn the art of breastfeeding and trying to press frozen sanitary pads onto my sore bits. If you miss me and you want to find out what’s going on (mostly with my breasts and sore bits, I’d imagine) then please do bookmark my other blog, The Uphill. You can subscribe to the email feed and it’ll notify you when I’ve written something worthy and original.

neom intensive skin treatment candle

2) Random beauty mention, just in case I don’t manage to test this out pre-baby-madness; NEOM’s new Intensive Skin Treatment Candles. Now these “beauty” candles aren’t a new concept – Oskia do a gorgeous Rose de Mai one and I’ve seen a couple of others about, but…HELLO! Look at the packaging on this beauty! Absolutely knock-out. Very luxe and impressive and I can imagine that the product itself won’t disappoint; the Scent to Sleep version has been formulated to soothe and nourish very dry skin and there’s the highest possible concentration of essential oils blended in to give the ultimate aromatherapy hit. A sleepy hit, I’m guessing from the name of this treatment – I can’t wait to try it. You can find more details on the NEOM website here.
