Hourglass Sheer Colour Trio: Perfected Summer Glow

Hourglass Illume Sheer Colour Trio Review

Cream cheek products can be rather hit and miss; too sheer, too difficult to blend, or quite often simply too creamy so that they slide about and streak and set in all of the wrong places. But few things rival a cream blush or bronzer if you’re looking for that truly dewy finish – they are sheer in the way that a powder would struggle to ever be, allowing the beauty of the skin beneath to shine through whilst giving just enough colour to achieve that properly healthy glow.

And who better to give us a trio of dewy, healthy creams for the face than Hourglass, the experts in subtle-but-believable glow? Their Ambient Lighting powders have quickly won cult status for their ability to brighten and illuminate without shimmer, and now their Illume Sheer Colour Trio brings us an all-in-one face-pepping solution that works beautifully over foundation as well as lighter bases and clean, moisturised skin.

This is the type of palette that quickly becomes indispensable; an understated highlighter for tops of cheekbones and underneath the brow, a suit-all blush and a warm bronze that can be buffed seamlessly into your base.

I like to use a brush to apply the bronzer (here it’s the Kat Von D Light and Shade, though it’s not really the most appropriate!) and then really buff it out. You’d think that the bronzer would be a bit wishy washy, what with the palette being called sheer, but it actually has phenomenal pay-off. You need to be quite careful – it’s easy to go overboard!

But carefully blended (keeping it to the sides of the face and not allowing the colour to creep too far towards the nose) it just gives a beautiful warmth to the skin. And the blush, layered over the top, stops things from becoming too “beige”:

Look at that rosy glow! It suddenly brings everything alive, doesn’t it? And if you’re wondering about the strength of the highlighter, then an easy way to see it is to look at my cupid’s bow – I have it on in the pic above, but not in the ones beforehand. Can you see how it just adds this gorgeous spotlight?

I was going to finish this post by saying that the Illume Sheer Colour Trio in Sunset isn’t a necessity for summer face-making – it’s expensive and you can probably cobble together similar things from your makeup stash – but, by jove, if you love your luxe-feeling makeup then you will adore this. Punchy, long-lasting formulas and with that perfected velvety finish that you seem only to get from the higher-end versions. It’s £54 at John Lewis here – it appears to have completely sold out and done a runner from the Space NK website, which doesn’t surprise me one bit.

The Nails are Out: Joan Collins v Christian Louboutin

joan collins timeless beauty nail lacquer helene

OK look, I know that it’s not quite there in terms of coolness and luxe-appeal, but if you were badly craving the Christian Louboutin nail polish and couldn’t justify the £36 splurge, then I do rather like the lacquer from the Joan Collins Timeless Beauty range. I think that the Deco packaging would look great on any dressing table, it’s got a tiny touch of the “sexy high heel” feel and the Helene shade is as red as red can be.

Louboutin’s nail polishes have acquired a certain “beauty icon” status already, despite having only launched late last year, and I have to say that although I was initially incredibly cynical about the whole thing, the concept is very clever. Those stiletto-like bottle lids turn the polishes into more than just beauty products; each one is like a small piece of sculptural art. Sexy, modern, and bringing something completely new to the beauty table, on a visual level at least.

I’d completely forgotten about the Telegraph video that I made on the collection pre-launch, so if you’d like to see the Louboutin polishes up close then do have a look, the page is here. If the Louboutin treasures are a complete no-no in terms of budget and/or the amount you’re prepared to pay for a nail polish (I get you!) then you can find the Deco-inspired Joan Collins range at Urban Retreat – nail lacquers are £13.

Lime Wood Hotel: Spiders in Belstaff and Mice in McCartney

lime wood hotel and spa review

Never before had I been in such dire need of a break. Avid readers will have heard me bang on about my desperation to go on holiday many times, this year, but somehow – what with work commitments and baby stuff and Mr AMR never being free at the right moment – time for a holiday has failed to miraculously materialise.

(I’m learning, though, that the right time for a holiday will never miraculously materialise: you have to book it, pay for it and stick to it. Which is precisely what I’m going to do next year!)

Anyway, last week my planets must have suddenly aligned because two very fortuitous things happened: firstly, my sister-in-law reminded me that she had offered to baby-and-dog-sit for two nights and asked if we would be taking her up on her offer any time soon, and secondly, the very kind people at Pai Skincare said they could help to arrange a stay at the amazing Lime Wood Hotel* in the New Forest.

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

Now – in all truthfulness – I would have been happy sitting very quietly in a hole in the woods, completely on my own, with perhaps a book and a knapsack filled with bags of Haribo and sandwiches from the local 24 hour garage, but a break at the sort of luxury hotel that has award-winning food, a state-of-the-art spa and rooms you never want to leave sounded much better. I even decided to let Mr AMR come along with me.

When you’re finished with my words, I would highly recommend having a little whizz about the Lime Wood Hotel website to get a good look at all of the pictures, because I’m afraid I was having such a good time I didn’t remember to take my big camera out – though I did do some video (coming up) – and, at any rate, their photos are so much better than mine. I’m tempted just to nick them and use them here instead of my own sorry efforts, but I think better to click on over and appreciate them in their rightful home. Also, if you’re on Google, do take a look at the Lime Wood reviews because they are almost unanimously brilliant and that’s a difficult thing for a hotel to achieve…

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

…though not at all surprising – it’s clear you’ve landed somewhere special from the moment you set foot through the front door. It’s like the posh country house of the long-lost, very eccentric and very rich relative you wish you had. Some sort of Uncle Cuthbert or similar – one that might die and leave you five million pounds. Except that never happens in real life, does it? I’d scoured my family tree for possibly wealthy, old, childless relatives before I was even out of my teens, such was my keenness to be left lots of money and not have to do GCSE advanced maths.

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

Anyway, we’re not talking Country House in a stuffy, “don’t touch the suit of armour, Bertie!” way, and we’re equally not talking Country House in the shabby-chic sort of way that you might see at The Pig, which is Lime Wood’s sister hotel. No. This is Country House with zero shabbiness and absolute maximum style. If there was a spider lurking in the corner then it would probably be kitted out in Belstaff boots. If – highly unlikely – a mouse made it into one of the rooms, then it would no doubt be lounging around the skirting boards wearing something by Stella McCartney. A miniature jumpsuit, perhaps.

The point I’m trying to get across (in the oddest way, because the chances of seeing a spider or mouse at Lime Wood are virtually zero – it’s the neatest, cleanest non-city hotel I think I’ve ever seen) is that everything – and I mean everything – is stylish and well thought-out.

coach house 1

There are 12 suites and 17 bedrooms at Lime Wood; we were in one called Coach House 1, which I’m assuming was a suite, though I forgot to clarify with the lovely receptionist. I’m pretty sure that it was a cheeky little upgrade, because on my bill and reservation it was a “Spacious Room”, but from the website description and various customer reviews, it seems that our two-floored two-terraced space was a cut above. Not complaining. Not at all. Our “room” was like a Tuscan turret and the little outdoor space that cut into the bedroom was just the most brilliant touch, especially as it was broiling hot with glaring sunshine when we arrived. (Rained the rest of the time, but that was a good excuse to take lots of naps and read the entire paper, including supplements, cover to cover.)

coach house 1

I’m a total stickler for any sort of noise whatsoever, and so the Coach House, which was separate from the main house, was ideal for me. It was – almost – like being in a sensory deprivation experiment, apart from the fact that Mr AMR kept insisting on opening the blinds to “let the light in”. Killjoy. From most of the back windows there was a view of the New Forest up close and personal – in fact one of Lime Wood’s absolute star points, for me, was that it was directly-smack-bang in the forest. How many hotels can you truly step out from and be in proper countryside? Without having to cross the car park or a small road or what have you? Lime Wood has its own secret ramblers’ gate that leads straight onto the sort of woody, damp-smelling trail that has you wishing you’d packed a picnic and a raincoat and perhaps a small bivouac shelter so that you could truly go adventuring…

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

I’m pretty certain that a picnic would be possible – everything else at LWH (is it too familiar of me to abbreviate?) seems to be. Oh, and the food – really delightful. A four course Italian feast had us grinning from ear to ear but far from overstuffed, which is exactly how we like to be. The restaurant  – Hartnett, Holder & Co – was completely booked up for both nights of our stay, with just a little table squeezed in at 6.30pm for us, so it’s clearly extremely popular. Rightly so. My starter of pickled things (can you tell I forgot my notebook) with Mackerel was so moreish I ordered it for lunch the next day – my pasta was perfectly done, the duck I ordered was rich but not stomach-bloatingly so. All of it great. The following day we ordered from the more relaxed menu in the Courtyard Bar and everything was fabulous again – Mr AMR’s burger (he’s notoriously judgemental about them) was devoured in thirty seconds flat, and I had a selection of the salads, including Pear & Pecorino and Feta, Watermelon and Tomato, both of which were fresh and lovely.

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

I’m going to dip into some more detail on the Herb House Spa when I write about my Pai Skincare facial (bear with me, it could be next week depending on how quickly I get my act together), but suffice to say that it’s a destination in itself. As someone who is quite frequently bored of spas within approximately eight minutes, I was surprised to find that I let this one take up the best part of a day. The indoor hydrotherapy pool and sauna both had whole glazed walls directly facing the forest (see above – the trees are mere metres away) and there was a huge roof terrace wild with herbs and plants. An outdoor pool, an indoor pool, lovely treatment rooms… The changing areas had private claw-footed bathrooms as well as huge walk-in showers!

Lime Wood Hotel & Spa Review

Impeccable attention to detail. I’d go again at the drop of a hat. Advice, for people who – like me – have FOMO (fear of missing out! It’s a new phrase I’ve picked up from being down with the kids) when it comes to breakfast: the room service breakfast is EVERY BIT as good as the one that’s served in the scullery. Usually, I make Mr AMR trail me down to a proper hotel breakfast because I think they’ll have loads more options and the food will be fresher, but we had room service on the first day and it was all hot, fresh and well-presented. I just wish I’d ticked every option on the form (do it) and remembered to ask for toast.

You can book Lime Wood through their website or, if you like to get little free things, Mr & Mrs Smith. (Sign up for the Blacksmith card, here, which has no fee, and you get perks at every hotel you book through them – at Lime Wood it is, at time of writing, a bottle of champagne. Not to be sniffed at!) Rooms start at £275.

*with utmost thanks to Pai Skincare and Lime Wood Hotel for arranging this break. The first night was free, along with my treatments (see upcoming post); from thereon I paid full rate.

Burberry Makeup Review: It’s All About That Base

burberry foundation bb cream fresh glow

Last week I did a Burberry makeup tutorial, recreating the AW15 show look and revealing a couple of handy smokey eye tricks that their makeup artist, Wendy Rowe, had demonstrated. It actually gave me a good opportunity to really have a proper play around with some of Burberry’s base makeup products, as well as the colour- or trend-led cosmetics and I have to say that I’ve found something of a surprise love: the Fresh Glow BB Cream.

Now you must know by now that I have a  love/hate relationship with so many of these BB/CC/DD/EE creams; for a start, the letters mean something different to nearly every brand, so you never know whether you’re going to get a full-coverage high-SPF cream or a skin-adapting barely-there tint. Then some of them, to be quite honest, are just claggy, horrible, paper-paste products that won’t spread or blend and feel heavy on the skin – others are so sheer and colourless as to be virtually pointless. There doesn’t seem to be an industry standard, you just have to take each product on its own individual merits.

Which is what I do, completely ignoring the name and the marketing spiel and testing with an open mind – always asking the question what does this add to my makeup routine? In the case of Burberry’s Fresh Glow BB Cream it’s a juicy, healthy tint that’s light on the skin and easy to apply. I use quite a generous amount and so the SPF is perfectly adequate for me, at the moment, with my limited amount of outdoors time, which saves a step in the skincare routine. It also provides just the right amount of coverage (light) to even out my skin a little, so that if I want to I can go in on top with a light concealer or a dab of foundation here and there just to correct the serious bits (eye circles, nose redness etc) and still look as though I’m barely wearing any makeup.

Here I am actually not wearing any makeup:

Then here I am with a quick coating of the Luminous Fluid Base in “Nude Radiance”:

Burberry Makeup Review

– which I find works amazingly well underneath both the BB and the Fresh Glow Foundation – and then here’s the BB blended in – shade 02, Medium:

ruth crilly model recommends bb cream review burberry

Apologies for slight differences in light; that’s what happens when you shoot in natural daylight, the sun does a disappearing and reappearing act every ten seconds! But hopefully you can see that the coverage is sheer-ish, but good enough to begin to even out redness and take some of the blue out of the undereye circles. It doesn’t do spots and blotches (see upper cheeks!) but it does give a general look of “your-skin-but-fresher”. For those wanting more from their base, behold the Fresh Glow Foundation. Granted I have added mascara in this pic, too, so the whole thing does look more polished, but the finish is lovely:

ruth crilly burberry bb cream

I used shade 31 very sparingly over the BB, because shade 31 is a bit too dark for me. Shade 26 is a bit too pale, and I had nothing in between. Though looking online I think perhaps there isn’t anything in between, and on closer inspection of my picture I rather like 31! But anyway, can you see how it suddenly pulls everything together? I just applied very lightly around the centre of the face, buffing with a Real Techniques brush. Yum.

Which level of coverage do you like? I must take a pic of the BB with some mascara on, to give it a fair chance against the last photograph! Mascara makes a world of difference, doesn’t it? You can find the BB Fresh Glow for £30 at Net-a-Porter and all of the base products on the Burberry website. The Burberry Fresh Glow Foundation is £35 and the Luminous Fluid Base, £34.

10 Ways To Use Charcoal In Your Beauty Routine.

I recently got a big bag of activated coconut charcoal powder and have found myself using it for anything and everything that I can. It’s some seriously good stuff and incredibly beneficial for the body.

Here are 10 ways to incorporate this super ingredient into your routine!

1. Charcoal face mask

The most obvious of the lot. Charcoal can work with every skin type and removes impurities, blemishes and blackheads without drying out the skin. Mix it up with water or with other clays and powders to get fancy or just mix half a teaspoon with a ready made mask.

2. Detox bath soak

Add 1/4 cup of charcoal powder to your bath (sorry, you will have to clean the tub afterwards but it doesn’t stain) with your usual bubbles, salts and what have you. It looks crazy cool bathing in black water, like something from a horror movie, and does ya good too.

3. Full body mask and/or scrub

Great for back acne, ingrown hairs and patchy tan! Mix a tablespoon with your usual body scrub (or make your own with sugar and coconut oil), or make a huge batch of face mask and find someone willing to paint your back.

4. Scalp detox spray

Keep your scalp free of product build-up and dandruff with charcoal. Find a DIY here.

5. Teeth whitener

More horror movie inspiration for you here so get brushing to reveal pearly whites! I’ve tried this, it’s shocking, hilarious and feels weird at first – but you get used to it. Charcoal has no taste at all but you can work your way up to using it neat by using it with toothpaste at first.

6. Gentle creamy face cleanser.

Mix ground oats with a little charcoal and water to form a creamy paste and then wash your face, this is an ideal cleanser for very sensitive or dry skin as oats are calming and softening.

7. Charcoal soap

If you’re feeling extra crafty, purchase a plain soap base (as good quality as possible) and add charcoal before pouring out the soap to set!

8. Water purifier

Water is the best ingredient for skin health so it makes sense to keep that water as pure as possible. Get yourself a stick of charcoal and add it to a bit bottle of water to keep in the fridge. The charcoal will absorb any chemicals from the water and won’t infuse any colour or taste, either.

9. Black ‘lemonade’

Charcoal juices are a big trend, but why pay their extortionate prices when you can make your own detox drink for pennies? A 1/4 teaspoon of charcoal and a squeeze of lemon into a full glass of water does the job. Drink an hour before eating food to avoid the charcoal messing with nutrient absorption. Charcoal is meant to be great for bloating, hangovers and so much more, but of course consume charcoal with caution!

10. Cleansing balm.

Mix 1 tablespoon of charcoal with 2-4 tablespoons of coconut oil, 2-4 tablespoons of a carrier oil (such as avocado, grapeseed, jojoba) and store in a small jar. You can customise with essentials oils such as tea tree, rosemary, lavender or rose, and if you live in a warmer climate where your coconut oil is always liquid (lucky!) add 1-2 tablespoons of melted candelilla (plant) wax to the mixture to help it remain balmy. Adding the wax is also a good addition if you have very dry skin too!
Pick up your activated charcoal here if you’re in the USA, or here if in the UK!
Have you used charcoal for any of these DIY’s before?
