As someone who more than enjoys the slightly chillier days of Autumn, it will come of little surprise that I am already planning both my wardrobe and beauty routine for the coming months, and I more than have a contender for my fragrance of the season in Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne.
For those who are eagle-eyed amongst us, you may actually recall Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne from the English Fields collection of 2018? Well for anyone who fell hard the first time around for its light and delectable notes, the good news is that it is back to stay as a permanent fixture of the Jo Malone line up.
If like myself you aren’t a huge fan of spice lead scents and want something soft, comforting and dare I say cosy like a giant knitted blanket, then Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne could be the very scent you have been searching for. It is light, floral and yet thanks to the slightly oaty trail of Barley it feels fitting for the season of crunchy leaves and layered clothing. Speaking of layers, Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne does partner well with just about every existing Jo Malone cologne you can imagine; in the spirit of counting down to Halloween, I have of course been adding a spritz or too alongside Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir.
The issue with writing about fragrance is that a screen can never truly portray exactly how it smells or settles on the skin, regardless of how many punchy adjectives I may fit in a paragraph. However in the instance of Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne is that it is entirely agreeable and I do believe that you would be hard pushed to not like it. It is safe yet special at the same time and that is a space rarely occupied by any fragrance.
“When I smell Poppy & Barley I am taken to the heart of an English meadow during the harvest.
It’s the end of every summer when the fields are a sea of gold and I picture lively light poppies moving and dancing in the breeze.” – CELINE ROUX, HEAD OF GLOBAL FRAGRANCE
If you can imagine the crispness of the air when the leaves are slowly browning and your sudden need for a scarf, yet the sun is still in the sky and it doesn’t quite feel like Winter will be rearing its head anytime soon and you have Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne. It is sweet thanks to a ripe and altogether juicy note of Blackcurrant, delicately floral and slightly powdery with a fresh, heart note of Poppy (enhanced by rose and violet) and yet it has an almost savoury twinge, due to the addition of the cereal-like note of Barley.
Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne will be launching soon – link.

Comments Off on The Lowdown On Podcasts, Why I’m Addicted & How You Can Get Involved (Plus Some Of My Faves!)
Who would’ve thought six months ago that I’d be changing up my Netflix obsession for something a little bit retro and a whole lot more informative? I resisted podcasts for the longest time, assuming they were some complex geeky thing that only people on the Big Bang Theory and my fiance listened to on his journey to work; I thought podcasts were all about Ted Talks and intellectual debates about the state of the economy, but boy I was wrong. It was actually Kirsty from Labels For Lunch who encouraged me to make the leap into this new world (she’s always updating me on her fave shows,) and I’m so glad she did – because I’m officially obsessed. Unsurprisingly the obsession started with Serial and the story of a man possibly wrongly convicted of the murder of his high school girlfriend; as someone who spends her life watching murder documentaries and reading bloody novels of suspense, it was the perfect introduction and the way to get me thoroughly immersed from the offset. I found myself listening the episode after episode while I worked out in the gym, actually looking forward to my next session so I could find out what happened next, and when the last episode came to a close I was onto the next: Someone Knows Something. After I binge-listened to the story of Sheryl Sheppard’s disappearance, I needed a new hit; it was like a drug that I couldn’t get enough of. I finally understood why everyone was going loopy for podcasts and was at the front of the queue for the next installment of something that was the audio equivalent of a page-turner.
Since I got my Hepburn MK II VQ radio podcasts have become such a huge part of my daily life, as it allows me to play them via Bluetooth as I work, take a bath, wash up or lie with my eyes closed on the bed. My fiance laughed at me for the first couple of weeks as I carried it around with me from room to room like it was my beatbox and I was living in the Bronx! But I was so fascinated with this infinite library of audio stories that provided a release from the online or television based world I was living, that I just couldn’t put it down. I’ve become so immersed in the world of podcasting that I even launched my own, Made Online, and have been thoroughly enjoying this new challenge and being part of a new digital world. If you’re intrigued but don’t know how to get started, let me break it down for you and share the secrets of podcasting… You won’t look back.
WHAT ACTUALLY *IS* A PODCAST?
Essentially they’re audio shows, all pinned together by a specific topic or through telling a story over a number of weeks. Most podcasts upload a new episode weekly, not unlike Netflix, so you can subscribe via the iTunes or Google Play store to get them direct to your phone as soon as they’re released. It sounds complicated, but it’s just an audio telly programme without the restrictions of a schedule!
HOW DO I LISTEN TO A PODCAST?
The easiest way is via your phone; both Apple and Android have their own podcast apps and stores, all of which are linked to the iTunes store (where most shows upload their content to.) You can search within the app for inspiration, what’s new or simply by key word – when you find something you like you can stream, download or subscribe to get the whole lot on your device to listen at your own convenience. Can’t figure it out? Most podcasts have a website where you can listen to the episodes too.
WHY ARE PODCASTS SO HOT RIGHT NOW?
They provide an easy and on-the-go approach to new information; you can binge on them while you’re on your commute, connect them to your car’s speaker system to listen as you drive, play them direct from your mobile, stream them via your computer or hook them up to a radio like the Hepburn. It’s a refreshing alternative to the repetitive radio! They’re also a great way to digest stories, inspiration or information – they cover everything from comedy and business, to parenting, mental health, celebrity culture, criminal justice and so much more.
WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ABOUT?
I launched my own podcast about six weeks ago, simply called ‘Made Online’. It shares inspirational stories from those that have made their career, brand, business or life changing moment online – whether that’s being discovered, making connections, finding a skillset or launching a business. Right now there are five episodes (plus a teaser of my own story) from five amazing women who have used the internet to their own advantage; the feedback has been incredible and I can’t wait to share the next five in the series.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER FAVE PODCASTS?
So many! But a great starting place is Serial: it’ll really get you immersed and wanting to listen to the next episode straight away, which is why it’s probably the biggest and most well known out there. (It was the original ‘Making A Murderer’ if you enjoyed that concept.) The second season of Someone Knows Something still gets me thinking, while Reply All is a hilariously random show about all the facets of the internet that helps long journeys fly by. Hashtag Authentic is great for bloggers and creatives, while How I Built This provides inspiration and insight into business an brands. For something to make you giggle try This Paranormal Life: they cover everything from aliens and Big Foot to the Lost City Of Atlantis and whether the Loch Ness Monster was actually killed in the 1940s.
So there you have it – all you need to know about podcasting, so there’s no excuse not to start downloading and subscribing this weekend!
If you’re already a podcast addict, do you have any other shows you think I need to listen to?
Discover my podcast ‘Made Online’ in the iTunes store here, or listen on the website here. New episodes every Wednesday, straight to your phone if you subscribe!
You can get the Hepburn MK II VQ radio online in a multitude of colours for £129.99; it’s also available in department stores and I’ve even seen some in TK Maxx!

I realised that I’d spent most of the summer so far banging on about oil-free “weightless” sunscreens that “disappear into the skin” and “don’t leave a residue”. But there are people who don’t particularly wanta weightless sunscreen; they want to feel as though they’re wearing something protective, or they prefer a slightly richer texture, or they find the alcohol in some of the very light versions a little drying. And so I’ve spent the past few weeks testing out SPFs that aren’t quite so light and fluid texture as Anthelios or Clinique’s Even Better; these have a bit of weight to them and more of a silky, hydrating feel. They’re by no means heavy; just not entirely weightless.
The first that I tried and, actually, one of my favourite sunscreens of the year is the Anew Clinical E-Defence SPF 50 from Avon. This is a stonking buy, it really is; broad spectrum, an array of antioxidants to help further protect the skin and a beautiful velvety texture that absorbs quickly and sits well beneath makeup. I really, really like it. I imagine that if someone blind-tested it then they would think that this sunscreen was far more expensive than it really is – it has a luxe, plumpish feel to it but isn’t greasy in the slightest. I actually find it hydrating enough to use without a moisturiser underneath, which is a bonus – it’s also fragrance free, and it can be quite difficult to find sunscreens that aren’t scented.
Just top marks all round, really, and the best of it is that the Clinical E-Defence is a very affordable £20. You can find it at Avonshop here.
Sponsored content – It’s Summer, it’s often humid and if like myself you have less than perfectly well behaved hair you may be in the market for something to tame frizz? But why stop there when you can address issues such as damaged hair, colour fade and protect against heat inflicted from electrical tools as well reducing static and increasing hair shine with one product? If you add one hair product to your hair routine, let it be Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment (£14.99).
I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to my unruly locks, I’m pretty much a wash and go kinda gal, purely because I am so strapped for time so the Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment, is right up my alley and as it is an exclusive salon formula you know you are in good hands. Yes, Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment is loaded with benefits but if it is tricky to use, you’ve already lost me. Luckily this easy to use mist, only requires to be misted onto damp hair, comb through and style as normal. It literally takes 2 minutes and as such I’m sure this is something we can all spare for better hair?
So let’s talk about my hair shall we? It’s long, frizz-prone, bleached so therefore damaged and generally if I’m being entirely honest with myself not all that manageable. As I said above, I’m pushed for both time and patience, therefore I don’t have a huge interest in hair styling products. Well that was until I got to try out Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment for myself. Essentially the best way I this instantly hydrating formula is to perhaps compare it to a beyond souped up leave-in-conditioner. Simply must in, go and enjoy all the benefits with next to no commitment.
Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment protects against heat so you can ditch other heat protectants, saving on time and money – you can also wave goodbye to additional conditioning treatments and de-tangled because this tropical (lime and coconut) scented miracle has you covered. From the first use you will notice that not only is your hair far more manageable but also shinier too with improved volume too – great if like myself you have fairly lank hair.
As great as all of this is, it pales in comparison to what Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment achieves when combined with heat. For years I have wanted to try out a Keratin infused blow-dry in the salon but as mentioned I am pushed for time. Rather wonderfully, I no longer need to worry about this as Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment has given me the silkiest, smoothest hair with a high gloss sheen and all I had to do was run the hair straighteners through my hair.
It shouldn’t really be surprising as Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment is a salon formula but sometimes you have to experience products to fully understand the hype. And that’s what I think you should do, give Keratin 10 – Leave In Miracle Treatment a whirl and see how one beautifully scented product can revolutionise both your hair and routine.
You can shop the entire range here but I personally rate and recommend the Keratin 10 money saving triple pack (£17.48) – link.

Sorry, I was late with the video and I’m even later with this post! It’s quite a mish-mash, this favourites video; jewellery, sunscreens, a pair of ballet pumps… You can read more about the wonderful lightweight sunscreens in last week’s post here and I’ll be doing a more in-depth review of Benefit’s Push-Up Eye Liner very soon, so keep an eye out for that. (An eye out. Get it? No?) And I’m sorry, but I make a bit of a mistake in the video; I thought that Jan Marini’s eye cream was £14. God only knows why, because I’ve got a few Jan Marini things and they’re anything but cheap! The eye cream is 14ml, so perhaps that’s where I got it wrong. But anyway, it’s a good eye cream in terms of effects (I have found it to be quite brightening and tightening in the undereye area) but it’s not the most pleasant in texture. I think it’s quite sticky and so I use it at night. For me, it was a bit of a product rave when I thought that it cost £14 but at £49 I think it needs to have a more pleasing texture to bring it up to speed with the competition! It can be quite difficult to apply makeup on top of it if it dries too thickly.
On the other hand, I have an unconditional product rave and that’s the MD Formulations Antioxidant Moisture Gel. It gives a hit of moisture but leaves no residue whatsoever. Great for the summer if you just want something very light but effective to pop on beneath your sunscreen, or if you have incredibly oily skin and you want hydration without all of the other strings that are usually attached! If you want something, also, to follow your spot treatment such as Effaclar Duo, this could be a nice option.
