Tory Burch Eye Shadow Palettes

Guys. Tory Burch is expanding her beauty line. (Cue happy dancing, squeals of excitement, tears of joy, or all of the above. Seriously, don’t make me do it by myself.) I have to say, I love it when designers branch into makeup. Not only is the quality of their products usually pretty high but the packaging is always to die for. I mean, Marc Jacobs? Gucci? Dior? All stunning. Burch already has perfume, lipstick, and a couple of cheek products in her line, but she’s adding three new eyeshadow palettes for Spring 2015. And while her other products feature that (gorgeous) signature orange-and-gold packaging, the eyeshadow palettes have a slightly different vibe. Instead of the gilded effect, the coveted designer has enrobed her shadows in vintage-book inspired compacts.

Each palette comes with six original shades in a long-wearing formula, a dual-ended brush, and a how-to sheet that includes instructions on how to achieve two different looks. And as for the colors themselves? A neutral lover’s dream. Each palette is at least half-full of easy-to-wear shades of brown. But if you are trying to branch out into color (or just enjoy incorporating some in your mostly-natural eye looks), two of the three have purples and blues that will easily compliment your neutral eye. Let’s take a look.

Pas Du Tout

Colors include: Gamine (matte natural ivory), Menagerie (copper pink), Beau (golden violet), Paillette (metallic bronze), Jolie Laide (shimmering dark chocolate brown), and Au Contraire (matte black)

Cat’s Meow

Colors include: Hint (luminous tan camel), Smoking Slipper (golden espresso brown), Midnight (deep navy), Tawny (radiant taupe), Stone Cold (shimmering gray carbon), and Magpie (iridescent blue-violet).

Catch

Colors include: Wild Card (golden aubergine), Folly (matte rust brown), Blushing (luminous pale nude pink), Little Bit (shimmering pale peachy pink), Morning Glory (iridescent lavender), and Evil Eye (matte vibrant blue)

Each palette retails for $60, and is available for pre-order on toryburch.com. Catch and Pas Du Tout are currently available on nordstrom.com.

French Skincare: What I Bought at the Pharmacy

ruth crilly pharmacie skincare haul

A much-requested video; half the world now seems to be obsessed with the mysterious delights that are kept locked up in the legendary French Pharmacie. I don’t tend to go pharmacy shopping as much as I used to, and that is mainly because the things that I used to stock up on are now widely available. Escentual.com stocks Bioderma, Embryolisse and La Roche-Posay, which were the three main brands that I’d stockpile, and you can get NUXE and Vichy and Klorane and Lierac very easily too. But there is still something quite fantastic about seeing all of these brands squashed onto the shelves together; huge multipacks of Bioderma cleansing water sitting above rows and rows of delectable face creams, twenty different treatments for sensitive-skin-that-is-also-acne-prone* underneath cheap tubes of ointment that promise to “repair and protect”. Even if some of the labels and names are now more familiar, it’s nice to see such range and variety in one space.

There’s nothing in the UK that really compares to a French Pharmacie; not that clean, almost clinical presentation and the way in which samples are given out with every purchase and the fact that staff are nearly always very knowledgeable about the ranges they are selling. It interests me, too, that there’s very little in the way of colourful or garish packaging in the Pharmacie; you are often forced to read the label quite carefully rather than choose according to visual stimuli. It makes me think that the Pharmacie shopper is perhaps much more likely to get something that is suitable for his or her skintype or skin concern – you can’t just pluck things off the shelf, not so much. If you go to Boots, for example, there are so many brands vying for attention and they all have to sing out from the shelves and blind us with their wacky names and pretty bottles – I often wonder whether the customer has a fair chance at being able to select what they really need. I get very easily distracted by pretty packaging and names that promise great wonders… Just thinking aloud, there!

*Treatments for skin that is sensitive and also acne prone, look to La Roche-Posay and Avene in the Pharmacie – or they are at Escentual.com too. If you’re looking for Lierac then it is stocked at LookFantastic.com and Delarom, which is a new discovery for me, can be found at Urban Retreat.

Scalp Care SOS.

John Masters just gets me, y’know?

My scalp is always playing up and just when I think I’ve gotten it under control with a great product, it starts flaring up again. When I got my hair bleached a couple of months back I specifically went for a look that was an ombre sort of style (I don’t have a clue what I’m talking about with hair styles so please bare with), so that the bleach wouldn’t touch my scalp. I would LOVE to bleach my hair all over and dye it purple, but alas, I know the weeks after with a seriously irritated scalp would make me cry. Just the process of having to have my hair bleached and then coloured, brushed, pulled at, blow dried and washed several times in about 5 hours left me with a really, really sore scalp for days afterwards.

About a month after having my hair done I decided to order some John Masters products for some scalp TLC. I’ve used the ‘Bare’ Shampoo in the past and loved it, but decided to specifically go for the scalp care shampoo this time to see if something more targeted would help. I also picked up a hair rinse and smaller sizes of conditioner and a scalp treatment to trial before committing to a full size. It’s been just under 3 months now, and having nearly used everything up I thought a review was in order!

Organic Spearmint & Meadowsweet Scalp Stimulating Shampoo (£19)
I was dubious how long this 230ml bottle would last, but 3 months with 2 people using it is pretty good going, right? There’s even about an inch left to go yet. This minty fresh shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean without being too squeaky. It contains a host of astringent, anti-inflammatory, soothing and strengthening ingredients. My hair feels soft, shiny and still in great condition after being abused. My scalp is still a little flaky but it has improved a lot, and hasn’t been itchy or sore since introducing this bunch of products.

Lavender & Avocado Intensive Conditioner (Mini £8)
Nobody ever finishes their conditioner at the same time as their shampoo, surely? So im glad for this mini size, as I might just run out at the same time as the shampoo.
This is one of those conditioners that has an immediate effect on the hair, as soon as you apply it your hair turns silky soft and detangles immediatly, and the effects continue after you rinse it out too. The ends of my hair have felt so soft and conditioned since using this, it’s really, really good, guys. I was going to repurchase as I thought it was vegan after reading the ingredients on the Love Lula website, but they seem to be wrong as my bottle and everywhere else lists honey as an ingredient. Beauty products are the one thing I keep forgetting about and slipping up on in this whole new vegan world!

Herbal Cider Hair Rinse Clarifier (£17)
An every-other-wash sort of deal, I was sold when I read that this helps restore the PH of the scalp. It cleans away buildup and environmental residue, including lime from hard water, leaving hair super shiny, with apple cider vinegar, lemon oil, flower and herbal extracts.

  • apple cider vinegar – removes sebum and product buildup on hair shaft
  • lemon oil – alleviates oily scalp; antioxidant; antibacterial; antiseptic
  • nettle – makes hair shiny and thick
  • rosemary – stimulates hair growth; adds volume and shine
To use I just add 1-2 capfuls into a jug, dilute with about 1 cup water and pour over clean wet hair. You can leave this in but I prefer to quickly rinse after a minute or two to get rid of the vinegar aroma (though I know this doesn’t linger if you decide to not wash it out). This isn’t a miracle product, but it’s a nice treat for the hair and scalp and I’ve enjoyed using it. Not sure I would repurchase, though.

Deep Scalp Follicle Treatment (Mini £7)
I know I want to purchase the full size of this, the mini size didn’t last very long at all for me as I probably used too much each time. I don’t know if I can give a decent enough review for this reason, but my initial thoughts were good; it felt so cooling on the scalp and I didn’t have any issues whilst using it! No greasy roots, not itchy at all, just a fresh normal hair and scalp. I need to use it long term to see if it doesn some of the other things it claims, so will try and pick it up asap!

What do you think of John Masters? Have you used the brand before?

Bobbi Brown Instant Pretty Palette

Bobbi Brown Perfectly Pretty

Another great pick-up from World Duty Free (wishing I was a frequent flyer now!) is the Bobbi Brown Instant Pretty Palette. It’s just a very simple little palette that covers understated to smoky and exactly the right shade blush to bring your complexion to life. It’s a well named palette because Perfectly Pretty is exactly what it is. It’s not going to knock anybody’s socks off because it’s very neutral, but I can see this being a useful handbag palette if you like nude and natural looks. It’s the kind of palette I would take on holiday when I want a make-up break! I wear far less make-up when I’m away because when you’re trying stuff out every single day, it really is a relief to downscale and take a beauty holiday. The Bobbi Brown Instant Pretty Palette is a travel exclusive and it’s £33.45. Shades in the palette are Bone, Beige, Pink Quartz (metallic) and Chocolate, with Nectar Blush. ; ;
