KIKI Health Baobab, Acai & Camu Camu Powders.

If you have been reading this blog for a long time, you’ll probably know I’m quite a sucker for a good superfood. It started a couple of years ago now when my skin was really awful, I would try anything for a little relief in the spot department, at the same time the health food craze blew up and I discovered superfoods. Clearly it was meant to be.

If you read my recent post on the KIKI Health Magnesium spray, I wrote that I also picked up some of their superfoods too and would review them! well, today is that day. You lucky ducks.
KIKI Health sell a whole host of superfoods, probiotics and health supplements, including coconut oil, obviously… I mean, is a health brand even really a health brand without coconut oil?!

Baobab
The most common and affordable of the bunch, this citrus-y powder is meant to be high in vitamin C, Iron and fibre, and is a good energy booster. Like all superfood powders I add this into my smoothies and thankfully the flavour doesn’t mess with any of my favourite combinations. This is a great little addition to boost the nutrient content of smoothies, added to cakes and muffins before baking, or whipped up with banana ice cream. I also think it would be good to add this into some hot water and lemon if you feel a cold coming on.

Camu Camu
Camu Camu blows Baobab out of the water when it comes to vitamin C content. This fruit powder is highly prized for the crazy high vitamin C amounts. Whilst orange juice contains about 50mg of vitamin C per 100g, fresh camu camu fruit can contain up to 2,200mgs! And since drying fruit concentrates the nutrients, dried camu camu contains even more. This powder from Kiki Health states it contains 6068mg per 100g!
You can use camu camu in all the same ways that I listed above for baobab, but I also like using this as an added ingredient to face masks. I use about 1/4 of a teaspoon mixed with a powder face mask and add water. The camu camu gives a big hit of vitamin C that is hard to replicate in skincare, as vitamin C is very unstable in liquid form.

Acai Berry
This popular purple fruit is pretty much the reason highly decorated smoothie bowls exist. I can even get frozen acai pulp in my local tesco’s now – and I live in the middle of nowhere!
Acai berries are full of vitamin A, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. Though, not enough to stop taking a multivitamin or anything like that. I decided to pick up some acai powder because the deep purple colour (like all purple fruit and veg) means it’s high in antioxidants and so very good for skin health! I add nearly a full teaspoon to my smoothies, add mixed frozen berries, spinach and a banana and bobs your uncle, the most beautiful purple smoothie you ever did see, and if drinking something that naturally vibrant isn’t good for you, then I don’t know what is!

Pretty Things to Sleep In: La Maison de Senteurs

la maison de senteurs

I made a rather lovely new discovery whilst browsing the Marks and Spencer Nightwear rails; they are now stocking a beautiful range of lightweight, cotton pyjamas and night-dresses under the brand name “La Maison de Senteurs“. Having very recently moved into a barn (temporarily, whilst my own house is knocked about and added to), the rustic, Country Living style of this range appeals to me no end. It’s all muted tones, crisp white cotton and broderie anglaise trim – as far as you could possibly get from my usual style, but pregnancy does seem to have done odd things to me and I’m finding myself drawn – inexplicably – to things that are pretty and borderline-virginal.

la maison de senteurs

Anyway, I treated myself to this little number: the Pure Cotton Floral Embroidered Chemise, largely because it looked OK over my bump but also because it made me feel like the kind of girl who might spend all day reading in the bedroom window of her parents’ farmhouse in rural South of France, waiting for some strapping young lad to come back from a day in the fields and ravish her. (Where the hell did that come from?!) Alternatively, back in the real world, it’s the kind of nightdress that makes you feel nicely summery and optimistic – it’s like the sleepwear equivalent of freshly-laundered cotton sheets. Just add a little jar of lavender sprigs to sit on your bedside table and the idyll is complete…

You can find the whole Maison de Senteurs range online here – I’m going back later to pick up a little matching dressing gown!

la maison de senteurs

Also gorgeous – but I have to admit I’m a bit cross about the fact these went into the sale days after I bought them full price – are the Rosie for Autograph bits and pieces. I bought the Floral Cuffed Hem pyjama bottoms (£14 in the sale here), which are unbelievably comfy – and I like the way that the ankle cuffs stop them from ruching up my legs at night – and the Cocoon Wrap with Cashmere, here, which was £35 when I bought it but is now £17. Bloody, bloody hell. I do like a bit of dedicated “night” knitwear- slouchy jumpers and wraps that are just for lounging in and throwing on over your pyjamas. I only started getting into the whole loungewear-layering thing after I discovered Hush, the bible for comfortable-yet-chic dressing. I haven’t yet done a proper springtime blast on the Hush website – stay tuned for my seasonal splurge!

Like A Green Juice For Your Face.

For super healthy skin you really need to pay close attention to both what you eat and what you apply topically. Well, with the Dr. Alkaitis Organic Universal Mask you’re getting the best of both worlds. The ingredients list is pure as pure can be, with everything sounding as at home in a salad or fresh juice as it does now in a face mask.
The Universal Mask is for skin that’s dry, sensitive, inflamed or feeling irritated. It’s also a good one for when you just need to perk up your skin with a mask session, so really, it’s for everyone. I really prefer masks in powder form these days as I like to customise how I mix them; plain water, floral waters, oils, honey, yogurt or even mixed in with a cleanser. It’s up to you. This particular mask really shines when mixed with yogurt, some oil & water, or a cream cleanser. The powder is really easy to manipulate – it’s isn’t scrubby, gritty or hard to mix (some clay masks can be a pain to get just right) just a few drops of water turns the powder into a silky cream type of formula that spreads easily on your skin. And yes, it does turn you an attractive pea green.

To keep the ingredients active on the skin Dr. Alkaitis recommend not letting this mask dry, so if you do use water to mix just keep a mist handy to spritz every few minutes. If you’re using something like honey then this isn’t necessary as it won’t dry!
After 10-20 minutes I like to press a steamy hot cloth to my skin for a few seconds before wiping the mask away, then following up with a swipe of toner on a cotton pad to get any last green residue. I don’t know if anyone else has this issue when masking but my flannels or muslin cloths can never really get every last scrap, I always find my cotton pad has some mask on it afterwards.
Once removed my skin feels soft and calm, this isn’t a super active going to pull out every spot and reveal your brightest glow kinda mask. It’s calming, soothing, a little rejuvenating and very softening, like a chill pill for the skin. I reach for this after a detox or exfoliating mask, or when I don’t know what else to use. It’s reliable, comforting and feels like it’s doing some good.
Ingredients:

Dr Alkaitis’ Grass Juice Complex (kamut grass*. alfalfa*, oat grass* and wheat grass*), oat Buds*. Dr. Alkaitis’ Sea Vegetable Complex (chlorellaº, dulseº, spirulinaº, sea palmº and sea willowº) Dr. Alkaitis’ Vegetable Protein blend (brown rice*, quinoa* and amaranth*) Dr. Alkaitis’ Vegetable Complex (carrots*, cabbage, sweet potato*, kale*, broccoli*, asparagus, brussels sprouts, cucumber, ginger*, onions, cauliflower, beets*, tomatoes* and parsley*). Dr. Alkaitis’ Seed Complex (pumpkin*, sesame*, amaranth*, flax*, soy*, oats*, rye*, buckwheat*, millet*, barley*, brown rice* and sunflower*)

* certified organically grown
º ethically wild-crafted

You can pick up the Dr. Alkaitis Universal Mask here (£48) and get yourself 15% OFF with the code ‘ANNABEL15’ at Alyaka. I would also really recommend the Dr. Alkaitis Travel Kit (£56) too, which has 7 very generously sized different products for you to sample from the range – it would last you aaaages! A good one for a gift or travelling, or just trying something new.

Have you tried this mask or brand?
