Makeup Treasure: The Modern Mercury Highlighter

In my original review post and video review of the Victoria Beckham makeup collection for Estee Lauder I mentioned that my top pick, if you were going to buy one item, would probably be the Modern Mercury HighlighterSort of risky to recommend it, really, as it was virtually the only product in the line that I hadn’t managed to try, but I felt safe in the knowledge that if it was a faithful reproduction of the original Illuminating Gelée, released in 2011, it would be a definite crowd-pleaser. A proper piece of makeup treasure.

And – thank goodness – it’s every bit as lovely as the first edition. More so, in fact, with its luxurious ribbed leather compact and sleek looks. I wish that I still had my original Illuminating Powder Gelée so that I could compare old and new; the 2011 release seemed to have much more of a shiny finish in the pan than the VB version, so I do wonder whether the formulas are identical, but the tone, from what I can tell, looks the same. A soft, minky sort of shade that is a little bit darker and warmer than the traditional “whack it on the cheekbones” sort of highlighter. I think that it’s ever so slightly easier to work with if you have a deeper skintone than an extremely fair one – it needs a very light touch on fair skin, I feel. It’s almost the shade of a very pale-dusky blusher, though obviously far shinier.

Saying that: I’m quite fair myself at the moment and have been whacking this highlighter on left right and centre! So don’t be frightened by it if you’re used to those pale, cool-toned illuminating powders – I’d say that Modern Mercury is universally flattering, you just need to adjust your application to suit. I use a smallish brush to get an accurate application on the cheekbones (you don’t want it all over your face, unless you want to pass as a robot) or I dab with fingertips onto the bridge of my nose, cupid’s bow, under the eyebrows to give them a lift…

Ten Face Highlighters for Under £10…

If you missed the Modern Mercury collection the first time around (you can watch my review video here) and love that high-polish sort of skin glow, then you might want to snap up this Victoria Beckham version. At £48, it’s about fifty-eight-thousand times more expensive than the original, which is an irritation – but (as I said in my VB round-up) you’re paying for the luxury element and the branding. Whether Beckham is your cup of tea is another matter!

The Victoria Beckham x Estée Lauder Collection Review…

You can find a few highlighters left at Harrods online here – they seem to be out of stock at Estée Lauder, though it’s always worth checking.

An Easy Fix for (Egg) Separation Anxiety

two chicks egg whites

Something I’m slightly embarrassed to admit, as a keen-ish cook: until yesterday I had a complete aversion to separating eggs. You know, when you crack the shell and then pour the yolk from side to side, attempting to keep it whole and unbroken whilst the gloopy, snot-like whites fall miraculously into a waiting bowl? That. A silly thing to have an aversion to, I suppose, and I don’t know where it all stemmed from, but I have avoided all recipes that require either egg yolks or egg whites for most of my adult life. I think that it’s the fact that so many things can go wrong – the yolk is so precious and delicate, yet you have to pass it from shell to shell and the shells just happen to have the most jagged edges of anything on earth. And God forbid you break the yolk and some of it goes into the bowl of whites: I can still hear my Home Economics teacher shouting “YOU WON’T GET PEAKY WHITES IF THERE’S YOLK IN THE BOWL!”

The whole egg separation thing is such a palaver and even if you manage to get a lovely saucer of plump yolks and a clean bowl of whiskable whites, you still have to find something to do with the parts of the egg that you don’t need for the recipe. “Make mayonnaise!” suggests Google. “Use the yolks for a Hollandaise or to make homemade ice cream!” I’ve just spent an hour separating eggs into a series of eight different bowls for fear of contaminating a bulk-load of whites; do you really think I can be arsed to now make Hollandaise?

Anyway, all of these issues are in the past for I have made the greatest culinary discovery: egg whites in a carton. Ready separated, pourable egg whites. Thank you so much to the readers who recommended the Two Chicks brand last year; I hadn’t ignored your advice, I was just waiting until the right time to buy them. Which was Christmas – prime pavlova-making time. (Nigella’s Prodigious Pavlova to be exact, recipe and pictures to follow.) To use the Two Chicks egg whites you just pour two tablespoons out for each white that you need and then put the carton back in the fridge. The remaining whites last for a week or so, plenty of time to add them to an omelette or what have you, though I just made a whole load of meringue and then froze a batch of them for later. You can never have too many meringues in the freezer – instant dinner party pleaser!

So: Two Chicks. Life changing, at least in terms of the kitchen. Those who are good at separating eggs may sneer and tut and they are welcome to carry on with their perilous yolk-pouring antics, but I am a Carton Convert. You can find Two Chicks egg whites at most supermarkets – I got mine at Tesco but all the stockists are here.

Weekly Window Shop: Cricket Jumpers

cricket sweaters women

A couple of weeks ago The Sunday Times Style ran a piece about cricket jumpers and there was one in particular, a lush cashmere number from Boden, that kickstarted a bit of a window shopping sweater obsession. Because the one from Boden was sold out, immediately, and I wanted it so badly, and you know what it’s like when you see something and then can’t have it and spend years trawling eBay only to finally get hold of it six years later but then the moment has passed and you wonder why you ever wanted it…ugh.

So, here are my alternatives. None of them quite compare to the £195 Boden Sweater-of-Dreams, but I’m consoling myself that at least I’ll have saved some pennies…

jack wills marten sweater

The Jack Wills Marten Cricket V Neck, available in black (or is it navy?) with white stripe or white with black (or is it navy?) stripe. It’s not cable knit but it’s an easy-to-wear weekend throw-on that’s not too low in the neckline. £59.50 here.

best cricket jumpers

The Open Stitch Cricket Jumper from Topshop gives things a new twist – I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be the one I end up going for. It’s slightly softer than a traditional cable knit and there’s something high-end feeling about the contrast between the open knit and the sporty stripes.. £39 here.

crew clothing cricket jumper

Crew Clothing’s pink jumper doesn’t have stripes but it is cable knit and I do tend to go a bit batty for pastels in spring. They are never flattering, really, are they? Unless you’re that type of person that constantly looks like a cheerleader/VS model with a light tan and neutral, sort of honeyed, hair. If you fit the bill (or you somehow look great in pastel pink, or you, like me, will buy pastel anyway and try to style it out) then this sweater is £48 here.

best cricket jumpers

A bit of Zoe Karssen is always welcome – this luxurious wool, silk and cashmere jumper should be a hefty £225 but is £112.50 on The Outnet here. It’s mercifully longline, which is great when you’re running after a baby all the time and trying not to show all of your saddlebag area!

Oh, hi £7.75 version! I have no idea what your quality will be like, but you’re long in the length and your stripes sure are pretty… It would be brilliant to know what you’re actually made of in order to cost what you cost (air? positive thoughts?) but I suppose that anyone wanting a quick cheap cricket jumper fix won’t mind too much. I have visions of walking along in you getting electric shocks every ten seconds, but I won’t put the others off. £7.75 at Amazon here.

Skincare Products for Hormonal Skin

a model recommends skincare review

My monthly hormones have returned from their extended pregnancy/breastfeeding hiatus and are attacking my poor skin with extra enthusiasm. Sore-feeling spots that brew just beneath the surface and an oily t-zone, but at the same time I have a bit of sensitivity and a tendency towards redness that means I have to treat my face with kid gloves. So to speak.

Here are the products I’ve been relying on to placate my angry, temperamental skin – this isn’t so much of a “routine” as a few supplementary skincare things that I’ve been swapping in as an emergency measure. I’ve used all of them (apart from the Blemish Dots) on non-hormonal skin too, so I’m by no means suggesting that these are purely PMT face-savers; they’re all-round top picks.

Beauty Products for Hormonal Skin PMT

Clinique’s Mild Clarifying Lotion (£16.50 at Amazon here) is just brilliant. Swipe it on after cleansing  to very gently exfoliate and unclog the skin without stripping the absolute bejeezus out of it. As someone who looks upon the other Clinique Clarifying Lotions with something bordering on abject horror, this one is a bit of a surprise: the formula is soothing on sore skin and an easy pre-serum/moisturiser/oil step that takes seconds to do. Just pour a bit onto cotton wool and wipe.

Beauty Products for Hormonal Skin PMT

The Extraordinary Rebalancing Facial Oil from L’Oreal Paris has been a fixture on my bathroom shelf for quite a few months, now; it does a great job of moisturising (as you’d expect) but also – somehow – seems to stop my t-zone from being quite so oily. It’s a lightweight, non-greasy formula and so sits just as well beneath makeup in the daytime (give it a good massage-in) as it does on a cleansed face at night. The formula is lovely (no mineral oil, for those who look out for that) and the ingredients list rivals those of some of my far, far more expensive oils. It’s £13.33 here.

Beauty Products for Hormonal Skin PMT

A while ago I raved about the Blemish Patches from COSRX: emergency spot plasters that stop you from picking and squeezing and help to heal the pimple faster. The Blemish Dots from Skyn Iceland are the same sort of idea, except that instead of just forming a barrier they contain the spot-fighting ingredient salicylic acid so you’re actively treating the blemish as well as protecting it from grubby fingers. I think that the patches are slightly thinner than the CORSX ones, too, so perhaps less visible if you want to keep one on during the day. Though overnight is more ideal!

Gentle clay masks for PMT skin…

You can find them for £17.50 at Marks and Spencer here – quite pricey if you compare the little dots to a bottle of spot treatment gel, but I think very effective. And M&S are currently offering a free skin set worth £15 with every Skyn Iceland purchase, so that softens the blow somewhat!

Beauty Products for Hormonal Skin PMT

The last weapon in my current anti-PMT-skin arsenal: Liquid Laser from Alpha-H. I’ve mentioned this a few times now, but it’s a great one if you want a serious moisture injection without having to layer on thick, heavy creams. I like to keep everything light and clean-feeling when I’m in that “everything feels grubby and unclean” stage of the month, and this is great if you want an overnight treatment that sinks straight in and feels fresh.

Soothing Moisturisers for Sensitive Faces…

It’s a bit of a powerhouse concentrate, leaving the skin plumper and brighter without the potential risk of causing breakouts. I also find it to be reasonably gentle – not too tingly – which is important for me when I’m trying to keep my skin on an even keel. You can find Liquid Laser at Cult Beauty here – it’s £47.

Olympus PEN Digital Camera E-PL7 #spons

Olympus PEN

Olympus PEN

When people have a moan about my blog, top of the moan list is my photos. I am the first to say that my photographic skills are basic – when I look around some of the incredible photography on blogs it’s even more obvious that I’m showing inferior pictures and it’s bothered me for a long time. But, time is what I don’t have – to do a course or study on line or any of the things that might just pick the photos up a little.

So you can imagine that I practically bit off Olympus’s hand when they offered me the chance to host a photography workshop for my blog friends at their studio in Bishopsgate using the Olympus PEN Digital E-PL7 Camera. We had the best of tutors with Cleveland Aaron showing us around the camera (find him on Twitter at @cleve_A to see his profile picture taken by his four year old son! clearly photography skills run in the family!) and needing all of his patience!

So, I’m at the very beginning of my journey with the Olympus PEN Digital Camera E-PL7 but have managed to connect it to WIFI at home so that I can download pictures from the camera to my iPhone (I know..! It’s like discovering the microwave all over again – “it does what?”). As someone who has just existed with iPhone pics for the past two years, it’s really hard for me to tell you all the facilities because I don’t know them yet.. but one of the most useful aspects for bloggers is the flip down LCD screen that means you can selfie away very easily indeed.

Clarins

Here’s one of the pictures I took last night while we were playing with how to use light. Bearing in mind I had only picked up the camera about five minutes previously, I’m rather pleased with it.

So, these are some of my ‘practice’ pictures – realistically, it is going to take some time for me to get used to it and find all the functions… but.. *thrilled face*!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think we were very lucky to have Cleveland – he explained how to use the camera so well for us non-techies and in such a way that I came home with enough basic function knowledge to use it immediately – so don’t laugh at my new efforts – they WILL get better!

As a blogger camera, the Olympus PEN Digital Camera E-PL7 is probably the ultimate in ease of use (I mean, if I can, anyone can!) and versatility with functions that mean you can be creative rather than obvious (the ‘spot’ colour option where everything can be black and white except the one thing you want to be in colour), the tap screen to take a picture, the WIFI, the focus with everything blurry behind (I’m sure there’s a technical term for this!) – oh, so many things. I know it’s going to take a little while to learn it, but I genuinely feel I will have better photography on the blog from the PEN – in fact, I know I will. I am never, ever going to be David Bailey but pictures play such a big part of blogging, and my pictures are something I’ve felt self-conscious about (thanks, trolls) for a really long time. The best word to describe what I feel about this camera is relief. At last, I have the tools to do the job properly – although, caveat.. give me time to work my way around it!

Although we were given our cameras by Olympus, I now know I need to invest in the macro lense (£69) a ton of white paper, a tripod and a basic little lamp (I will take Mr BBB’s from the bedside..shh) as well as a cheap n cheerful LED lamp (Morrisons have them for £5, according to Mikhila @msbudgetbeauty). Sponsored as this is, I am genuinely SO happy to have this camera and I’d hand on heart recommend it a million times.

There’s a whole lot more to read up on about the camera HERE.
