Why Giving Up Make Up For Lent Has Changed Everything

Why Giving Up Make Up For Lent Has Changed Everything

In March, I embarked on a spending ban in aid of raising money for Christian Aid, a few days prior to that I did purchase a lot of make-up with next to no thought to what I was doing – in the moment, I wrote it off as a much needed expense for my job never mind the fact that I already owned half of what I bought in various disguises – basically it was the nude lipstick that broke this camels back. If ever there was a time to reevaluate my shopping habits it was in that moment, and when approached with the idea of giving up make-up for Lent at the aid of a charity the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The idea of letting down those in need would prevent me from ever straying of course and wither I raised 50p or £500 (my page is here) I would be happy in the knowledge that I am at least trying to do something beneficial for others, rather than adding another unused lipgloss to my already groaning pile.

Why Giving Up Make Up For Lent Has Changed Everything

I’d be lying if I said I found the concept of giving up make-up shopping for 40 days (and nights – the nights are when the temptation to online shop seems all the more alluring) was without its challenges – the Bobbi Brown Havana Nights collection has been whispering and now shouting my name for the last few weeks and there is also a few new Too Faced products that I have coveted for quite some time now. Then again, isn’t there always something new to grab your attention and before you’ve as much as dipped an eyeshadow brush into your newly purchased palette, there is something as equally glossy and exciting launched to grab your attention and thus the circle is never ending. For the record it is of no business nor interest of mine how you spend your money but as things goes, the never ending accumulation of quickly disregarded make-up was weighing heavy on my conscience as I began the challenge for Christian Aid.

Why Giving Up Make Up For Lent Has Changed Everything

Over the last 40 days I have learnt that I will forever be enticed and excited by cosmetics – and of course accept that this is part and parcel of my vocation – but will now only purchase products after much deliberation. There are a hundred and ten million (maybe…maybe there’s more) beauty blogs out there, all with their own well formed opinions, I don’t need to be the one that reviews every single beauty product – in fact wouldn’t it be nice if I added a human element to this site, a few tales from beauty insiders and such? I have also began questioning myself, asking if I really need another matte lipstick or if I am suffering from fear of missing out (F.O.M.O) – something in the past that I have let dictate not only beauty purchases but technology and on occasion the odd pair of shoes.

Lent may be over (and to an extent I am relieved) but going forward I will be donating once a month to Christian Aid – even if it just the price of one eyeshadow, every little helps. You can find out more about how you can get involved here – link.

BioEffect Daytime

Bioeffect Daytime

Bioeffect Daytime

If you’ve read my blog for a while, you’ll know I rave and rave about BioEffect Serum, which doesn’t come without controversy. BioEffect uses barley derived EGF (epidermal growth factor) and there’s genuinely nothing like it for a whack of glow to your skin. I’ve looked at all the QVC reviews on this and it’s a mixed bunch, so what I can say is that it certainly suits my skin. But, EGF itself causes great debate on-line – everyone has natural EGF but there is a line of thought that EGF applied to the skin can cause cells to work in different ways. All I can say is that I love this product, I feel it is safe, but you must do your own careful research and draw your own conclusions.

With that said, Bioeffect’s newest launch is a day cream for dry skin. BioEffect Daytime looks like a glossy, loose cream in the pot, but actually once you dive in has more of a cold cream texture so doesn’t exactly glide across the complexion. However, in terms of keeping your skin hydrated, it’s stellar. I used this as soon as I got it and didn’t need to moisturise again for 24 hours. For testing, I cleansed using CeraVe Cream Cleanser, and did not apply a night cream – I wanted to see how long I could hold the benefits for. I’m really impressed with it.

Checking on the ingredients, barley extract and shea butter are in the mix.. shea is a well known moisturiser and I suspect that is what is doing the work here, but it does also contain EGF cellular activator, the results of which won’t be noticable on a two day trial. All I can say is that so far, I haven’t had a product from Bioeffect that hasn’t done good things for my skin – it seems to deliver extremely well, but do do your research first.

Bioeffect Daytime launches in September – everything from BioEffect is expensive, and Daytime is no different at £55 for a small pot. It launches in October.

A Blog-Appropriate T-Shirt and a Breastfeeding Question

whistles beaute t shirt

I thought that this t-shirt was rather appropriate, considering my passion for all things beauty. I’m not quite sure whether the huge letters on the chest distract attention away from my rather matronly bosom or make a feature of it: either way, I like this t-shirt and (as is my way) will probably wear it non-stop for the rest of the week.

Someone asked me in the comments on the Chunky Jumper Post whether it would be possible to breastfeed wearing one; I know this is probably more a discussion for The Uphill but I’ll briefly touch on it here, too, because it’s actually really bloody hard to find things to easily breastfeed in until you’ve got into the swing of things. Dresses (unless they’re shirt dresses) are totally out (unless you enjoy sitting in your pants with a load of fabric bunched up by your ears), but when it comes to tops it’s amazing how adaptable things can be. Shirts can be unbuttoned slightly and are therefore relatively easy-access anyway; loose vest-tops can be pulled downwards if you find the right cut, and when it comes to t-shirts (like the above) or sweaters (like the ones here), if you’ve got something good on beneath them, you just hike ’em up from the hem and away you go. Underneath you’ll want something that’ll cover your tum but allow you to make the chest accessible. H&M do good-ish vest-tops, but then there’s this genius little thing called the Breast Vest that keeps your bra region fabric-free whilst covering the rest of your middle. You can find them online here.

Update: ha! Just seen that I’m doing exactly the same pose in this photo as in my last picture for the jumpers post. So much for variety – I must be a little bit out of practice…

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Look Who’s In My Bathroom

Two very long videos for you, perfect viewing for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I feel honoured to be part of Sali Hughes’ In The Bathroom series, where she pokes about in people’s cupboards and drawers and manages to conduct rather in-depth interviews all at the same time…

If you ever wanted a “crash course in Crilly” then now is your chance, because we chat about everything from my early modelling years to juggling work and motherhood; from nipple sensitivity to the disadvantages of an en suite. There are very few stones left unturned.

I’m not going to write very much more for this Sunday Tittle Tattle, because you’re about to spend over two hours listening to me talking, but please do give the videos a “like” and leave a comment! You can find all of Sali’s In The Bathroom series on Youtube here. Annoyingly, my website won’t let me embed both videos on this page, so when you’ve finished watching part one below, click here for part two!

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Hello From The Other Side…

bathtime remedies

Oh man, I honestly thought I’d never feel normal every again after my two-and-a-bit weeks of cold/cough/throat/chest things. I started to get a bit depressed, lying in bed all day, and even my marathon reading sessions didn’t really cheer me up. (On that note: I have so many new book recommendations for you. I’m going to do a post or a video next week!) I had to dig out some of my best anti-cold products for the bath (see photo above, read about them here) and I pretty much lived in my two-vests-underneath-two-sweatshirts illness outfit, which Mr AMR forced me to wear as well as a SCARF. Indoors. And in bed. It’s amazing I didn’t strangulate myself in my sleep.

Bathtime cold and flu remedies…

Anyway, here I am, limping at half-speed back into work and trying to get going with all of the things that need doing. The biggest project at the moment is to get my office/studio sorted; we moved back into our house in September and I still can’t get into my office because it’s packed with boxes almost up to the ceiling. I keep finding things broken every time I go in there (last time it was a photographic light, more often than not it’s bottles of nail polish that have been crushed and broken) and so I almost dread opening the door. The worst thing about the whole situation is that one whole side of the building is window, so every time we look from the house into the garden we see into my rubbish-tip of an office! But finding the time to go in and tidy is proving to be rather difficult; I did two hours just after Christmas but barely even made a dent in the piles of stuff that needs to be sorted… Though I did find two out-of-date boxes of Marc de Champagne truffles and my eyelash comb, so that was a bonus. The truffles (two years past the sell-by) had gone as hard as conkers, but the comb was a good discovery. If rather boring by comparison.

Favourite thing of the week – and I had really been looking forward to this coming out – James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” with Adele. I don’t have Sky TV, so I didn’t know about Carpool Karaoke until a friend sent me a link to a Youtube clip, but I’ve watched most of them now (James Corden interviews pop stars in his car and they sing along to some of their best-known hits) and I find them quite addictive! This episode with Adele is just brilliant – she has the dirtiest laugh and a great sense of humour. I’ve watched it three times now… I’ve embedded it above for your viewing pleasure. Continue reading
