Testers Needed: New Effaclar Anti-Blemish System

skincare for acne and spots

La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Duo was an absolute skin-saver for me when I had my bout of adult acne two years ago. I had tried loads of different creams and treatments, but nothing really worked quite as well as the Effaclar; it seemed to be able to clear up congestion without being too harsh or drying. Since I first wrote about it, the feedback from readers who then went out and tried it has been brilliant. Obviously no one treatment will work for every single person, and some reported back that they found it a little too harsh (many of these people, it turned out, were from the US and using a different version which should only be applied to targeted areas!) but the majority of people loved Effaclar Duo and found, as I had done, that it worked a treat on angry, spotty skin.

The Effaclar Duo story is about to get a little bit more exciting, for those who suffer with spot-prone skin; this summer La Roche-Posay are launching a 3-Step Anti-Blemish System. Cleanser, toner and hydrating treatment. The cleanser and treatment (Effaclar Duo+) are already available, but the toner is something new and very, very wonderful. It’s a proper little powerhouse when it comes to smoothing the skin and reducing shine; it contains lactic and salicylic acids for a gentle exfoliation and zinc to help with excess oil. Salicylic is a bit of a hero when it comes to spots and cloggy skin; it gets right inside pores to unblock them and it’s also great at calming inflammation, despite its harsh-sounding name. The toner is alcohol free, non-drying and has been formulated with sensitive skin in mind so it should be gentle enough to use twice-daily.

teen skin products

For teens looking for an all-in-one skincare solution, I think that this Anti-Blemish system is going to be a winner. Affordable, easy to use and – most importantly – easy to understand! There’s no faffing about with pre-this and post-that, just wash your face, wipe over with the toner and finish with the Duo. It’s equally as appealing to women in their twenties, thirties and older who might be suffering with outbreaks of acne, though if your skin does tend to have dry areas you will want to use the Effaclar Duo+ in targeted areas rather than all over, and use a moisturiser on top.

The 3-Step Anti-Blemish System is going to be available from September priced at £29.50, but I have five sets that need to be tested pre-launch so that I can write an in-depth review. I’m looking for five testers, all of whom suffer from breakouts or acne, whether teen or adult. Testers must be willing to give me their honest feedback on the products and to (if possible) use only the 3-Step kit for about four weeks. (Obviously they must add an SPF for the daytime if they are going to be out and about!)

Fancy a try? Leave a comment below before noon on Saturday and I’ll announce the testers in the Sunday Tittle Tattle. You can read more about Effaclar Duo here, or if you want to try the treatment part on its own, it’s currently on offer at Escentual.com here for £12.39.

*Excuse the random-looking photos; I’ve been in a studio all week and didn’t have time to shoot pictures at home, so I went early one morning and took them on set! Most random one below…

Vera Wang Princess Eau De Toilette

Vera Wang Princess Eau De ToiletteVera Wang Princess Eau De ToiletteVera Wang Princess Eau De Toilette

Vera Wang Princess Eau De Toilette 100ml £60

Vera Wang Princess is a fragrance which I’ve always wanted to try as the notes sounded like my kind of fragrance, and I’d read nothing but rave reviews. I finally took the plunge and purchased it when I noticed the 100ml bottle within the Feelunique sale for only £23 which was crazy, especially as the 30ml version retails for £39. The bottle is really beautiful, and girly which is very fitting considering its name. The glass bottle is shaped into an heart with the perfume being purple to match the box. The lid of the bottle is a gold crown shape with purple crystals, and there’s a gold ring which can be detached and used as a ring – if you have super small fingers that is, as it’s teeny tiny.

Vera Wang Princess is described as an oriental floral scent which celebrates youth and femininity. The top notes feature water lily, apple, mandarin and apricot, whilst the heart consists of guava, tiare flower, tuberose and dark chocolate. Finally, the base contains vanilla, amber and wood. It’s actually a lot different to what I expected it to be, and I’m not entirely sure I know how I feel about it – I really am on the fence. In the many, many reviews I read of Princess, it was described as being a sweet and fruity scent but to me it’s actually quite powdery and it smells like baby wipes on first spritz but it does sweeten, just slightly.

It’s definitely not an horrible fragrance, but it’s just ‘nice’ in my opinion, and nothing special… and definitely not worthy of its super inflated price tag. When it comes to fragrance, I’m easily pleased but there’s just something about this scent that doesn’t work particularly well with my skin as I’ve smelt it on other people and I’ve really liked it so I’ll perhaps use it layered over scents to see if it makes any difference. It’s really funny how fragrances smell so differently on different people as I know that so many people love this, but sadly my love for it goes as far as the packaging.

Luxury Gifts for the Glam Night Out

christmas gift guide ideas

In my last post I brought you gifts for a “cosy night in“; now behold my Christmas present ideas for party animals, social butterflies and anyone who would appreciate a touch of luxury, a spot of decadence. Let’s start with a bit of sparkly Chanel, shall we?

chanel rouge noir nail polishes 2015

The classic Rouge Noir nail polish (right) and a special edition Lamé top coat. Great (if expensive) little stocking fillers for the lady who loves Chanel. (Who doesn’t?) You can find these at Boots.com for £18 each or 1,800 advantage points.

by terry baume de rose gift set

And then the ultimate in luxe, By Terry’s Baume de Rose. But not your standard Baume de Rose  – this is the special “24k” Gold Baume de Rose and there are three of them in a very posh presentation box with a bejewelled lip brush. Each one of these gold-lidded pots has the plumptious rose balm inside with a slightly different hue – a yellow gold, silvery-gold and rose-gold. It’s kind of a “money no object” gift, though, coming in at a whopping £250! You really really need to like someone… Find this at Harrods here.

tom ford lipstick diorific mat lipstick

Staying with lips, two utterly delectable lip colours for a sexy pout on that night out. (Poetry, you’re welcome.) I realise we’re on a bit of an expensive-product-roll here, but bear with me because things do get better, financially speaking! If you did want to splash some cash on a lipstick then you can’t go wrong with Tom Ford – this one, in First Time, is even more covetable than usual with its deco-inspired ridged casing. £42 (I know) here.

A sentence I never thought I’d write: “for a more purse-friendly option, take a look at Dior’s beautiful Diorific collection”. But do – the lipsticks are utterly divine. Gorgeous packaging that feels like something from a film set and beautiful colours with a flat, mat finish. I’ve shown Magique here, but after swatching them I actually think that the deep red Fabuleuse is my favourite. The Diorific lipsticks are £25.20 each here, they are usually £28.

dior christmas highlighter

If you’ve caught the Dior bug then the State of Gold Golden Light powder is another gem to look out for. A luxuriously heavy little golden compact that looks and feels very posh indeed.

diorific christmas makeup

Inside, a gently shimmering face powder that leaves a subtle glow – that’s if you’d ever want to use it. It’s very collectible! Again, great stocking-filler-fodder if you’re after things to really draw squeals of joy. You can find the Golden Light compact here for £45.

burberry gold powder

For an even softer glow (and one that’s gorgeously fragranced) try Burberry’s festive Fragranced Luminising Powder. It’s scented with My Burberry and has a slightly more muted, neutral glow than Dior’s offering. The casing is smart and modern, it’s the low-key-luxe option for people who love beauty but like to keep things low-key. £45 at Net-a-Porter here.

nuxe huile prodigieuse offer

From face glow to body glow; Nuxe’s Huile Prodigieuse OR. A sublime-smelling nourishing body oil with added gold shimmer to really highlight legs and arms. Or whatever else you’re showing off. And this is where things get more budget-friendly; Escentual.com have the gold oil and the larger sized original as a duo pack for £24 rather than £49. A really nice saving, especially if you’re operating on the “one for you, one for me” present buying scheme; you could give the gold oil as a present and keep the original bottle as a bit of a treat-to-self. If you’ve never tried Huile Prodigieuse then you’ll just have to trust me that it smells amazing. Find it here.

jean paul gauliter sparkle edition

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Classique fragrance has a huge, loyal following; if you’re buying for one of those followers then you could do worse than to glitz things up a bit with this Intense Glam version. It’s £81 at Harrods.com. Or, if you’re having budgetry issues then there’s a good deal going down on the “classic” Classique:

jean paul gaultier gift set offer

50ml of the timeless fragrance with a perfumed shower gel, £25.50 for the set. The perfume alone should be over forty pounds, so this is a brilliant way of getting something swanky for less. You can find the deal here online, only for this weekend. There’s an even better deal on the Le Male version – twenty quid! See here.

laura mercier brush set

If those little savings have freed up some budget then take a look at these excellent Laura Mercier brushes – a smart little hard-case to house them in…

laura mercier brush set

..and a set of six very useful brushes inside. The Stroke of Genius Luxe Brush Collection would be welcomed, I’d imagine, by pretty much anyone who wears makeup. The brushes are of a superb quality and they cover all bases (excuse the pun) with easy-to-use eye brushes, one for concealing and a large, soft face brush. You can find the set here at SpaceNK, it’s £65.

colab luxe shine hair fragrance spray

And now for some excellent Glam Night Out stocking fillers that will absolutely not break the bank. Firstly my Colab Luxe Shine hair fragrance spray with notes of cashmere, bergamot and oud, which is basically sex in a can. The subtlest bit of gloss that won’t weigh down fine hair and a grown-up smell: what more do you need to finish off your party look? You can find Luxe Shine for the special price of £3.32 at Superdrug.com.

salon tangle teezer matte black

And next to it, the Tangle Teezer I’ve nicknamed Batman. If Batman had a hairbrush then this would be it. Ha, I can imagine him detangling his locks after a steamy shower… Anyway, this is matte black and very cool – if you’ve a long-haired male in your life then this would be the appropriate Tangle Teezer to buy them, but really it would make an excellent stocking filler for any grown-up person. It’s usually £11 but is £5.50 this weekend while stocks last, here.

Marvellous. I’m off to sort the rest of my gift guide stuff into equally tantalising sections. We’ve had “cosy night in”, “glam night out”, I’m thinking “day in the bath”? “More than two hours sleep at a time”? “The chocolate and wine fest to end all fests”? I don’t know… Leave your suggestions below.

Sunday Tittle Tattle: and then she was Blonde

nicola clarke colorist

I’ve gone blonder for the summer, thanks to Nicola Clarke at John Frieda* who took me at my word when I flippantly said “I want to be loads blonder!” I had almost forgotten I’d even said it when the towel came off for my blow-dry and I saw my new, bright blonde locks.

I feel so much better with lighter hair. My makeup looks fresher (I need less of it), my hair doesn’t get greasy as quickly and the lighter colour somehow seems to be hiding my ridiculous broken-off sections that have been growing back in after the post-partum hair loss. Massive bonus.

nicola clarke colorist

I’ve been gradual-gradual-tanning my face with my Hylamide Glow (sorry to bang on about this stuff so much, I’ll swap soon and test out something new for you) and the sunkissed skin looks great with my crisp, clean blonde highlights. I don’t really put my face in the sun any more so it’s nice to look as though I’ve been on a bit of a holiday – foundation needs are quite minimal, most days, and I just sheer it out and tap a bit of concealer underneath my eyes. Unless I’m on camera or particularly knackered in which case I do the full priming, colour-correcting, base-buffing routine…

Anyway, an odd post for a Sunday Tittle Tattle, but I’ve had loads of  photos taken recently and realised that I hadn’t even mentioned my new do! I think I probably need a bit of a trim, now – some shape cut through the bottom so that the ends are less heavy. It’s quite hard to get my hair to do anything at the moment, it just sort of hangs there with a bored expression. Ding-ding, hop on the hair bus, next stop Chopsville! What do you reckon? Three inches off?

*I had my hair coloured at John Frieda in Mayfair – details here.

Weekly Christmas Shop: Gifts for Men | AD

Right. This is always the tricky one, isn’t it? Presents for the man/men in your life. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your Dad, boyfriend or brother, the things that are regularly paraded in front of us as suitable Christmas offerings are just so…drab! I’ve tried to give a mix of the practical and the pleasant, here – a few great gadgets, some hopefully non-obvious grooming stuff and a couple of frivolous bargains…

Let’s start with a few facial-hair-orientated things. For Christmas is the time to shake up his shaving routine! And also to replenish the sock supply in his underwear drawer, but I’m steering clear of socks here. It’s all about the gadgets and the nice, scented oily things.

johnny chop shop beard oil

Johnny’s Chop Shop Beard Oil – looks like something you’d pick up in the cool New York Apothecary C.O. Bigelow, but is actually a mere £6 at Boots here. Get it. Fill stockings with it. And if he’s into his beard maintenance, he’ll also need the next thing on the list…

mens christmas gift guide

Mr AMR’s first comment when the Philips Series 7000 Beard Trimmer came through the postbox: “wouldn’t this be an amazing idea for grooming the dog?” Honestly, I can’t take the man anywhere. Although, I see his point – this nifty gadget has an in-built vacuum to hoover up all of the beard debris as it comes flying off. Is that not just a little bit genius? Less mess (it catches up to 90% of the trimmings), a cleaner bathroom and the soles of your feet won’t look like the Gruffalo’s after you’ve stood at the sink to brush your teeth. You can pick up the Hoover-Trimmer (this is the future, people!) at Boots here for £49.99. It should be £74.99, so, quids in. More info on the Philips website.

mens christmas gift guide

And then the Philips Shaver Series 7000: not your ordinary shaver, it has to be said. Specially designed to reduce skin irritation, it can be used daily by men with even the most sensitive skin. No more red rashes. The DynamicFlex heads flex in five different directions so that you get a close shave around every angle of the face (please design one of these for the bikini line, Philips!) and the Gentle Precision blade system gently guides the hairs close to the blades for a more comfortable shave. Bravo. For more technical info, head to the Philips website – RRP for the Series 7000 is £250, but it’s currently £106.72 on Amazon! Run don’t walk, etc…

christmas gift guide men

Back to beards and the pricey option for oiling them up: the Neroli Portofino beard oil from Tom Ford. Sexy smell, suave packaging – almost worth growing some facial hair for! It’s £40 here.

christmas mens gift guide

If it’s got to be scarf then make it cashmere: H&M have a lovely one that won’t break the bank but feels suitably luxurious. 100% cashmere, six different colours and a ribbed knit that looks modern and smart. £39.99 here.

mens christmas gift guide

Darth Vader bath foam. Just because. There’s also a Yoda, an R2D2, a Chewbacca and – er – Captain America, depending on where his fancies lie. Note, though, that Darth has a cute little plastic cape at the back. Deciding factor right there. The bubble baths are £4.50 each from M&S.
