The Dior Nail Artistry Box Review

nail art gems and stencils

There are people who can “do” nails and people who simply can’t. I fall into the latter category; the very height of my nail-painting capabilities is applying a bright colour without going over the edges. I can just about do that now – first time – without having to spend ten minutes fixing my mistakes with a remover-soaked cotton bud! But a whole Nail Artistry set? With gems and stickers and complicated patterns? I’ll leave that to the girls who know what they’re doing – with steady hands and the patience of a saint. This week I asked Martha from @NailTechMartha to create something beautiful with Dior’s Nail Artistry box. Here’s the lovely Martha:

There’s a link to Martha’s Instagram below – her page is a colourful scrapbook of the different nail designs that she creates for clients, from the most natural French mani to the more outrageous, hot-pink pointy extensions! It was no wonder that the Nail Artistry Box got her pulse racing – the set included stencils, gems, tweezers and two polishes; a chrome effect one and a gel top coat. Like a dressing-up box, but for your nails. I would have absolutely no idea what to do with that lot, but it seems that Martha had a bit of a field day! Chromed nails, sparkly nails, little glittery stars…

I particularly like the diagonal pink-and-chrome nail and the fully-gemmed accent nail. Perfectly done. Martha is a pro nail technician, but she said “the stencils are fun and easy enough for anyone to apply, though patience is key when you’re waiting to peel the sticker off”, and she was also impressed with the chrome polish – “quick to apply and dried fast”. Martha loved the gel top coat – “very shiny, and again, quick drying. It sealed in the manicure beautifully” and was surprised that it gave such a professional gel finish without the need for any UV light. The only really tricky part was the gem application, Martha said that the gems are quite difficult to handle. (I suppose that’s where the “patience of a saint” part comes in handy!)

This set would make a great gift for nail enthusiasts; I like the fact that Martha has been able to create so many different looks and that they all look chic and sophisticated rather than the usual glitz that I associate with nail artistry. I’ll definitely be investing in a bottle of the gel top coat – you can buy it individually here, it’s £19 – and I might even be tempted by an accent nail or two! You can find the Nail Artistry box at Selfridges here – it’s £46. The pink that Martha has used in the shots is not included, but I love it – it’s shade 547, Bouquet. You can find that online at FeelUnique. I’ll be setting Martha another nail task soon, in the meantime make sure you’re following her on Instagram.

The Clear Skin Experiment.

At the end of January I began a two-month-long clear skin experiment with Viridian Nutrition. As you will probably know (because I simply never shut up about it) I’ve been battling with quite severe hormonal cystic acne for over a year and a half now. My skin has been a real sore point for me both emotionally and physically and I’ve tried countless methods looking for help to battle the acne beast, from antibiotics and avoiding dairy to holistic methods, juicing and taking every superfood possible.

Someday soon I’m going to sit and write down my full acne journey for you, because I really feel like this spotty chapter of my life is coming to an end now, and I have a lot to share about what has and what hasn’t worked for me. For now though, let’s get back to Viridian!

I’ve been taking the Clear Skin Complex capsules and Clear Skin Omega Oil for over two months now and the results have been amazing. I’ve been taking pictures of my skin for the past year and I really wanted to show a before and after from taking these, but I’m not ready to show them yet (sorry!), they make me cringe so badly because they’re just so awful, and even though I can see the major improvement, my cheeks are peppered in scars from the war zone it’s having to recover from.

I take two Clear Skin Complex capsules every morning with breakfast, these capsules are described as ‘a specially formulated blend of targeted minerals, botanicals and fat-soluble carotenoids in a base of probiotics’.

The capsules contain:

  • Probiotics
  • Burdock Root
  • Gotu Kola
  • Lutein
  • Natural Beta-Carotene/Carotenoid complex
  • Zinc
  • Astaxanthin
  • Selenium
  • Lycopene.
This blend, along with taking their Vitamin C daily, seems to have been working a charm. Burdock root is cleansing, anti-inflammatory and flushes the system of toxins. Gotu Kola is another skin beneficial herb that speeds up wound healing, stimulates collagen production and is also anti-inflammatory. Lutein is an important nutrient found in green leafy vegetables, it is mainly taken for eye health but has also been found to increase skin hydration and UV protection. Zinc is another important mineral for overall wellbeing and is extremely beneficial for skin health, including speeding up healing and controlling inflammation, you can never have too many anti-inflammatory supplements when you suffer from acne. Meanwhile selenium helps with acne by increasing antioxidant levels, helping protect cells from damage and fight infection. Lastly, lycopene (found in tomatoes) protects skin from sun damaging rays whilst offering a gentle lightening effect for hyperpigmentation.
The Clear Skin Omega Oil is the second part of this dream team and provides essential omegas for skin health.

“There are numerous research papers indicating the use of nutrition in skin health and consistent through this research are three factors: Inflammation, Free radical damage and Digestion. Organic Clear Skin Omega Oil provides a reliable source of omegas 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids. Dominant in omega 3, this oil also contains a range of fat-soluble antioxidants including vitamin E and carotenoids plus phytosterols and flavonoids.”

The oil contains:

  • Organic Golden Flaxseed Oil 79%
  • Organic Perilla Seed Oil 7%
  • Organic Avocado Oil 4%
  • Organic Pumpkin Seed Oil 3%
  • Organic Argan Oil 2%
  • Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil 1%
  • Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil 1%
  • Organic Blackcurrant Seed Oil 0.5%
  • Organic Elderberry Seed Oil 0.5%
This oil is beneficial in two major ways, firstly the essential fatty acids improve skin health with hydration and healing leaving it looking calmer, plumper, more hydrated and smoother. The EFA’s also encourage thinning of the sebum in clogged pores, and redness, itchiness and painful acne all responds well to the anti-inflammatory benefits. Omega-3 is also amazing for healthy hair and nail growth.
Secondly, flaxseed oil contains phytoestrogens which help stabilise our estrogen-progesterone ratio that can have beneficial effects on the menstrual cycle and hormonal acne (yes!).

To take this oil I’ve simply been adding 2-3 teaspoons into my smoothies. It adds a slightly nutty/earthy taste but it’s nothing major and I barely notice it now.

So what about results?

By the end of month one my skin was so much softer and calmer, it was smoother and looked brighter. I had a huge cyst on my cheek just as I started taking the supplements which was just starting to heal and has left a quite a large, deep scar but other than that I noticed nothing but steady improvement, especially on my perioral dermatitis and the overall texture of my skin.
By month two things were really starting to look up. I haven’t had any cystic acne since month two. That time of the month has just been, which is usually the worst and when I get my worst cysts, but this month I experienced only one spot on my chin and what felt like a tiny cyst on my cheek that never came to be anything and disappeared after a couple of days without leaving any red mark!!
My boyfriend even commented on how much better my skin is looking lately, so the changes must be noticeable and not just in my head 😉

My scars are finally healing without new additions every month and my left cheek which is the better less heavily scarred cheek almost look normal these days. I’m still working on the texture and indentations left behind which will take much, much longer to correct but it’s progress. My skin is nowhere near perfect, I still have little spots popping up here and there and quite oily skin but hey, rome wasn’t built in a day.
I’m now starting month 3 and I’m hoping by month 4 I can start taking just one capsule a day to make it more economical and just maintain the benefits, as well as purchasing Viridians’ Organic Flaxseed oil instead which is cheaper than the Omega Oil.

Do you take any supplements for your skin? if so which?

A Week To Go: Wedding Planning Reflections & Contemplating The Loss Of My Surname

So after months of planning, prepping, organising, faffing and decision making, the wedding is only a week away. How the hell did that happen? The last thing I can remember thinking was that we still had plenty of time, and then the next thing I know it’s around the corner and I’m starting to develop mild anxiety about table plans and confetti shots. As we step closer to this huge event and getting all our loved ones in a singular place, I’ve been very much reflecting upon the process as a whole and what this next chapter in my life means. There’s nothing like the world’s most expensive party to bring out the best and worst in people, and work as a catalyst to make you realise what the most important things to you are; everyone will (rather annoyingly after a while) try to give you advice or suggestions, but no matter how well meaning they are the only thing that matters is what you want and that you’re happy with what you create. After all, this day is about you and your partner and celebrating the fact that you’ve found each other. Nothing else.

The biggest learning for me during this whole process hasn’t been the fact that I really don’t care for formality and ceremony (we’ve cut as much of that out of our day as possible in favour of spending more time eating Krispy Kremes or at the bar,) but that people are (generally speaking) pretty damn selfish. I’ve had some amazing people around me during the last six months or so that have been incredibly supportive and encouraged us to do whatever makes us happy, but we’ve also had so much pressure from other people to accommodate their requests, requirements or ego. They’ve forgotten along the line that this day is about Josh and I – not them. It’s been hard to bite our tongues, play along with the politics and keep to our guns about decisions we’ve made (and I know it will pay off on the day,) but it doesn’t make it any easier to digest along the way.

They say wedding planning is one of the most stressful things you’ll ever experience, and I have to admit I was pretty chilled and cocky about the whole event up until very recently. We knew what we wanted and booked everything within the first couple of months of being engaged, meaning that we could just enjoy the process rather than worrying about playlists or table decorations. However, in the last six weeks that’s all totally changed; as we’ve had to nail down all the details, order all the bits and pieces and pay all the invoices, it’s all come at once and lead to many a sleepless night. There’s so much you have to leave to the last minute that I guess it’s inevitable (our table plan changed about six times the day before we needed to send it off to the printer!) and with a week to go I still have so many of the little things to tick off our list. (Send help – I have 80 favours to bag up tonight.)

On to lighter topics, what’s been the most fun is coming up with the quirky details that will really make our day our own. From personalised M&Ms, to donuts instead of canapes, a Busted tribute band and playing our favourite movie during dinner instead of background music (plus a few things I don’t want to spoil ahead of the day!) weddings don’t have to be cookie cutter or tick boxes; they have to be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Josh and I are kids at heart with a love for sweet treats, pizza and Sci-Fi, so it would feel foreign to have a super formal event. I’m literally SO excited to have such a fun day and do all the things that make us happy, with all the people we love in one place.

What’s surprised me most about these last days though has been the fact I’m starting to mourn the loss of my last name. For 34 years I’ve been Hayley Carr and with that moniker I’ve achieved a lot and have learned even more about who I am; I’ve performed on stage, passed all my exams, been to university, met some amazing friends, established a successful career, traveled the world, launched my own business, won awards and kissed many frogs before I finally found my prince. It’s been the name I signed when receiving deliveries, the name I earned my money as, the name I launched this blog under, the name on my trophies and associated with all my achievements. Even so, it’s never been a name I’ve particularly liked; my surname has always been ugly to me and one I couldn’t wait to get rid of (I don’t have a great relationship with my dad, so it’s not like I’m keen to keep it on to cement my relationship with that side of the family.) But as I step closer towards dropping it for good it’s definitely made me think.

There’s so much debate around the choices women make when they get married (to drop your own name or keep it for eternity?) but for me it’s never even been a question: get rid of the name and adopt a new one as soon as you can! I can’t wait to be Hayley Hall (and not only because it sounds a bit like a superhero and I love a bit of alliteration,) but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about leaving behind my old persona and adopting a new one. My current surname is one I share with my mum and my sister, who are the most important people in my live outside of my husband-to-be; for so many years we’ve been a triangle of strength and impenetrability, so it does make me a little sad to leave that behind in name even if not in life. I never thought twice about the change of name, but as I leave Miss Hayley Carr behind and become Mrs Hayley Hall it sounds hugely unfamiliar and a little bit scary. Although the rational part of me knows it’s just a name, the emotional part of me is a little sad to say goodbye.

As my calendar countdown now moves into single digits, I’m so blooming excited to get all pampered and preened ahead of the big day – and even more excited to slip into my dress (which makes me feel like a princess, even though I was adamant I didn’t want to feel like a priness!) and pop open a bottle of champagne. I’m so excited to stand outside our ceremony room with butterflies in my tummy, waiting to walk in and say our vows so we can become a fully fledged unit of Halls forever more. I’m so ruddy excited to spend the day seeing all my favourite people, eating our favourite food and dancing to our favourite music. I’m so excited to make memories we’ll cherish forever and for all the photos that will capture them uniquely. But most of all, I’m excited to be a wife and for this next chapter of my life with the guy that feels like was made specifically for me in every way. (I’m also pretty excited for the morning after breakfast and day in the spa nursing a hangover.)

Bring on October 5th 2017.

Last-Minute Halloween Makeup!

How is it already the end of October!? We were in full-on Halloween panic mode earlier this week, which went like this: FREAKOUT, stress-tears, pints of ice cream and then finally… a few ideas! This year, we’re using they’re real! push-up liner—a staple in our makeup bags anyway—to craft a few quirky costumes. It’s the perfect matte-black formula to double as eyeliner AND face paint (who knew?)—plus it’ll last in one of those all-night Halloween dance-a-thons (Hocus Pocus reference!). Here are 5 last-minute costume ideas using they’re real! liner:

CrazyCatLady_Blog

CRAZY CAT EYE LADY
She’s a hot mess with a fervor for felines—but her winged liner is ALWAYS on point! The outfit & hair are super easy—frumpy, messy, cat lady style. But it’s really all about the cat eye.

Get your they’re real! push-up liner out, and prepare yourself to make the most gorgeous cat eye you’ve ever laid eyes on. Use the liner to pull a wing out about ½ of an inch past the outer corner of your eye, making sure that it follows your bottom lash line. To anchor the wing, pull it in underneath your eye just a little bit, so that the wing looks totally feline.

Pro Tip: Put a light line of high beam underneath your wings and blend into skin to sharpen & highlight for cat eyes that totally pop! Don’t forget to top your look off with a few layers of they’re real! mascara for plush, bold lashes. And voilá—you’re a totally hilarious crazy cat eye lady!

DAY OF THE DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS
We love the sugar skull look, and it’s super easy with all the tools already in your makeup case. All you need is hello flawless! powder a few shades lighter than you, they’re real! push-up liner and a concealer brush. First, layer on the too-light powder to create a base. Then, twist your liner a few more times than normal to get gel at the tip, then dab on your brush. Using short strokes, paint the liner around your eyes to create those deep-set features. Then, use the liner pen to draw designs on your face—scars, floral designs, etc.

A totally on-trend design you can wear for Halloween or the day after for Day of the Dead.

SUPER MOD-EL
Twiggy is a gorgeous, iconic look that plays up your eyes—plus you can rock any ’60s dress you find at the thrift shop. Start with a minimalistic base (think light foundation and a little bit of soft pink dandelion for the cheeks). Then use they’re real! push-up liner to draw lashes on your eyelids for a dramatic mod look.

WILD THANG
Another one that we’re seeing all over the place (and loving!) is the cheetah look (think cheetah print on your face)! Apply a base of creaseless cream shadow in my two cents to your cheekbones and forehead. Then draw cheetah spots over it with they’re real! push-up liner, adding creaseless cream shadow in bronze have more fun to add dimension. Then, top it off with a little black nose. Adorable and easy!

BANGIN’ BLACK WIDOW
Our last throw-it-together look is a sultry spider. This is a great one because it’s easy, sexy and allows for a certain amount of creativity—for the artistic benebabe. Throw on your sexiest LBD, and then go crazy with sharp, opaque, black branch-like patterns all around the eye area with they’re real! liner. Think cat eyes on steroids!

And with that, the panic is officially over. Tell us, gorgeous, what are you going as this year?
