IMPORTANT: The Daily Fix Email

model beauty blogger

An important message for email subscribers; you have a new-look Daily Fix coming your way. It should be in your inbox right now, as a matter of fact, alongside the usual one. I’m de-commissioning the old system because there were quite a few glitches; the new one will be much more reliable. (There were thousands of people who weren’t receiving the daily emails – I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to fix this!)

So please check your inbox; you should have two versions of today’s post. The new one is very neat and has my funky face banner along the top – looks something like the one above, though not with yesterday’s content in it:

And the old one looks like…well, the old one. Here’s yesterday’s post in the previous format:

ruth crilly daily fix

You don’t need to do anything at all with regards to this email changeover, unless you can’t see the new one in which case please check your spam filter/junk mail for it and mark as NOT JUNK. You’ll then continue to receive your Daily Fix every morning, happy as Larry. I have automatically moved your email addresses over, so this should all be seamless, but if for some reason you can’t see the new email at all then you can sign up here. The old email system (pink title, weird formatting) will be turned off by the end of the week.

Thanks everyone!

Beauty SOS: The Pixi Nourishing Sleep Mask

Pixi Nourishing Sleep Mask

Oh, this little mask is all kinds of wonderful. I haven’t been getting much sleep recently (have I mentioned that? Oh, at least fifteen thousand times. Sorry) and my skin has been a bit dry and crappy and – I don’t know – kind of baggy feeling. As though there’s no plumpness or volume to it. A bit like a dusty, half-shrunken balloon.

The Pixi Nourishing Sleep Mask has been properly stepping up to the plate in terms of boosting moisture and re-inflating my face – a quick application last thing at night and in the morning my skin looks dewy and a hell of a lot fresher than it would do otherwise.

The idea behind the Nourishing Sleep Mask is that it “seals” in the products that you apply first – so serum and moisturiser, or serum and oil, or serum, oil, moisturiser if you’re going bat-sh*t-crazy with all of your skincare that night. Personally, I think that this works really well over serum, but it doesn’t feel too much at all if you want to do serum and moisturiser. That’s the lovely thing about it – it’s very hydrating, but nice and lightweight. It’s not like sleeping in lard. Neither is it so light and “fresh” that it simply disappears; it definitely forms a nice, non-sticky, non-greasy topcoat.

You can also use the Nourishing Sleep Mask alone, over cleansed skin, if you’re feeling lazy – it’s very hydrating even without layering it on top of other stuff – but I really feel that it sort of supercharges my other products when I take the time to whack it on last. (It works well over the Olay Regenerist 3 Point Serum (currently half price here) and my Time Bomb Powerball Moisturiser (here). Very plumptious!)

This Pixi mask is definitely a winner in the Overnight Masks category – more than just a “moisturiser you leave on”, it feels as though it has a specific function and one that it does very well. It’s a bit like when you stick on a disposable shower cap over your hair masque (try it, it’s excellent for fixing dry ends); it locks everything in and gets it all working that bit harder. As an in-flight mask, this would be brilliant; for anyone who is tired, going to too many parties or simply seeing the effects of the central-heating-inside-cold-air-outside situation it’s a beauty lifesaver.

And not one that will break the bank, either – £18 at Cult Beauty.

The Importance Of Having A Great Woman Squad

Growing up I never had the type of friendship group you see in the movies. I was outspoken, independent, chubby and not especially talented at anything related to sports or music; although I had a lot of friends and moved easily between circles, I never made that life-long connection with someone that I could rely on indefinitely. Over the years I’ve had many people I would consider ‘best friends’, providing the support I needed at different stages in my life, but few remain. People phase in and out of your inner circle all the time, serving different purposes and being with you as you experience different moments – and that’s ok. Those we’re forced into friendship circles with don’t have to stick around forever, as we instead stumble across people that can really make a difference to your outlook on life and ability to be the best kind of person you can be.

Doing what I do it can be quite lonely and isolating, so having connections becomes even more important; not having a colleague to turn around to and discuss last night’s telly or quietly moan about that b*tch of a client, really does make a difference. There’s nobody to tell you how well you’re doing, point out areas for improvement or provide a touch of encouragement when you need it most; there’s nobody to talk to (often from one day to the next) and a lot of the time not even the motivation, inclination or reason to leave your house for anything other than some more milk for your coffee. Our natural human instincts see us crave the attention and support of a likeminded community, so it’s increasingly difficult to completely go it alone; I’ve worked hard and I’m incredibly privileged, but it’s certainly not easy.

If there’s one thing that 2016 proved to me is that the importance of surrounding yourself with good people can never be underestimated. I’ve managed to find my own little #WomanSquad that have collectively kept me going, supported me through the ups and downs, made me laugh, let me get things off my chest, provided advice, helped to bounce ideas around and generally been at the end of a phone or WhatsApp message to keep me on the straight and narrow. Blogging and digital media is such a new phenomenon that for those working outside the field it’s as foreign as another language: I often try to talk to my partner and girlfriends about the stresses or dramas that fill my days, but more often than not it takes longer to provide context than it does discuss the issue. Unsurprisingly I give up, using the generic line of “yeah everything’s great, really busy, but yeah fab!” to move the conversation onto something else.

So what of this #WomanSquad? To my detriment I’m naturally a very highly strung, stressed and impulsive person; having a group of incredibly intelligent, passionate, successful and motivated women around me has helped not only to sedate that impulse and calm my frustration, but it’s taught me that talking through an issue with someone a little removed from the situation can help you come up with a far more successful solution. Not only that, but when we all need a moan and a good whinge about this or that, having an empathetic set of hands typing at the other end is often all we need to feel 100% better. It doesn’t matter if you’re a blogger, self employed, working a 9-5 or even a full time mum, having strong and supportive people around you is the secret to simply getting sh*t done.

I met LEX (talontedlex.co.uk) during a round-table discussion on rosacea a few years ago, but it’s only been in the last year we’ve really become good friends. Regular blogging dates in London keep us both fresh and full of ideas, while she’s the voice of reason whenever I’m having a panic. Incredibly respected in her field, I love seeing her grow from strength to strength.

KIRSTY (fashionforlunch.net) and I met when she gate-crashed my table outside Starbucks; and there a friendship was born. A complete nutter (and a colourful one at that,) Kirsty’s kind heart and ever-lasting humour always brightens my day. Possibly even more cynical than me, I love debating the ins and outs of the blogging world and putting the world to rights.

My birthday twin LEAH (devotedtopink.com) and I share the same passion and enthusiasm for making our own way. It’s always refreshing to meet people with the same outlook as you, especially when you’re the exact same age and proving you don’t have to change who you are just because you turn 30. A kick-ass business woman with big things to come.

And finally, JANE (britishbeautyblogger.com) can only be described as my rock. Over the years Jane has soothed my worries and concerns, let me vent my frustrations and helped me to think in macro rather than micro detail. With a wealth of knowledge up her sleeves, she’s not afraid to be brutally honest – something that I utterly respect.
These four women together keep my passion channeled, keep me from making silly decisions and keep me laughing. Although there are so many more incredible women that I don’t have the space to mention, it’s these four that together that have helped me more than they’ll ever know. There’s no competitiveness or cattiness, just support and openness to help one another meet our goals. Different perspectives, passions and strengths can help everyone in the long-term – and my #WomanSquad has helped me park the tears, outbursts and stresses in favour of laughter and the realisation that the world won’t come to an end over lipstick. If you don’t have a squad, yet may this be the year that you discover it. It’s life-changing.

This Works Sleep + Pillow Spray

Pillow Spray

I don’t need any convincing that This Works is onto something here with their Pillow Spray +. I can see from what I’ve been sent that this has undergone some pretty rigorous clinical trials with 200 subjects and the most interesting thing is that the placebo group were given a synthetic lavender spray which was significantly poorer in the results. However, the results from the placebo group aren’t shown and I’m certain that there is always an element of mind over matter in these things – if you think a thing will work, then it has a better chance of doing so than if you are sceptical.

Nonetheless, I know that the original This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray does work – I’ve used it (in fact, my whole family has) for transitory ‘can’t sleep’ phases and my YouTube partner for unisex beauty vids, Simon, swears by it. We’re not easy people to please.

So, what’s the difference between the original and This Works Sleep & Pillow Spray +? The new version uses microencapsulation technology (basically, where tiny droplets are encapsulated in a film sphere) so when you move around during restless periods, the fragrance is released and the theory is that the boost of aromatherapy ingredients when you’re starting to wake when you shouldn’t will lull you back to sleep again.

This Works Sleep & Pillow Spray + uses the same base of Lavender, Vetivert and Wild Chamomile as the Sleep range as a whole but in the Sleep + version, it’s a higher concentration in a slow release form. Probably worth every single penny of the £25 cost if you struggle to sleep.
