A nice little hair video to finish off the week. I did a roundup of my most-used hair products – shampoos, hair masques, conditioners and so on – because people are always asking and I don’t often delve into the world of hair on my Youtube channel. Perhaps because I don’t really do a lot to my hair and so the products I tend to use the most are the ones that just make it look sleeker, shinier and give it a bit of an undone vibe. I always think that it might be a bit boring for those who want to know about pink hair dyes and undercuts and semi-mohicans and all of that jazz. Not my cup of tea, I’m afraid.

So it’s all about the grooming and keeping things swishy, for me. Hair products for natural hair – things that you can just bung in and leave. No tools required. Had I included my favourite tools in this video then they would have been – without a doubt – Mark Hill’s Wicked Waver and the Big Hair from Babyliss. Masques are one of my favourite types of beauty product and I love making new discoveries. A masque that does nothing at all is one of life’s big disappointments! The Nuxe Masque Creme Fraiche is never going to fall into the disappointment camp if your skin needs a big whack of gentle hydration.

Nuxe Masque Creme Fraiche is exactly the kind of soothing mask that benefits from a little fridge time – its entire USP is to calm and hydrate inflamed or sensitive skin so a little pre-face cooling is just extra nice. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin, so don’t let that put you off – what I got was skin that felt bouncy and hydrated afterwards thanks in part to the plant milks and floral extracts. Although I’m nowhere near holiday time, it’s an ideal mask for post-sun – especially if you’ve had a little bit too much of it (don’t let that happen!) or post exercise when your face is red and perspiration has dried your complexion out.

I found a suitcase filled with pants and socks! As you do. There seems to be a neverending conveyor belt of boxes and cases that were stowed away in the storage container when we were having the house rebuilt; I thought I’d unpacked them all, but obviously not. Anyway, most of the socks and pants looked  old and bobbly (loads had holes chewed in them, thanks to Dexter the Dog’s penchant for knicker-stealing) and went straight into the fabric recycling bag, but that’s not what struck me as I unzipped the suitcase.

No, what struck me was the most amazing smell. A smell I recognised but couldn’t quite put my finger on. And when I say “smell”, I mean the entire contents of the case were scented with this gorgeous fragrance. It was like taking the lid off the world’s biggest reed diffuser! A quick shuffle through the knickers and out I came with the culprit: a prettily wrapped Roger & Gallet Fleur de Figuier soap. How can one little (actually quite big-ish) soap cause such a beautiful stink? I’ve reviewed Fleur de Figuier before – it was created by perfume supremo Francis Kurkdjian (the man behind many of your best-loved scents) – but I don’t really use soap, so must have randomly shoved this into the suitcase.

And – oh – how glad I am that I did. The silk-paper-wrapped soap is now housed in my lingerie drawer  and a year in storage has not even remotely dulled its scent. It is warm and seductive, figgy and fruity and it’s colourful and heady and absolutely uplifting. You can find the individually wrapped travel soaps on Escentual.com here – £5.50.

Bee Good

If bees knew how on-trend they are right now, I’m sure there would be some properly diva beehaviour! No more bee puns, I promise, but do keep a look out for new Brit brand, Bee Good, and their beautiful range of British wildflower honey-infused products. There’s a lovely little back-story to Bee Good Beauty – based in rural Hampshire, the brand uses honey, propolis and beeswax blended with active botanicals and plant oils and will ensure that some profit from sales is sent back to www.showmethehoney.org.

What I love is the attention to detail – with each order, you’ll get a little note which you can tear up and plant in your garden for a surprise crop of wildflowers. It seems like a very sweet thing to do. I’ve had a go with both of the above products, so first up, Honey & Wildflower Daily Moisturiser (which doesn’t smell of honey – it’s more of a light floral) that is very nicely hydrating and seems ultra softening on the skin. The second product is Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser is a bit of a mystery as it doesn’t really specify what the 2-in-1 element is, but it does a lovely, skin softening cleanse that you rinse away with water and a (provided) muslin cloth. There are lots of products – these are just the two I’ve tried, but I’d recommend keeping an eye out for the Honey & Wild Water Mint Cleansing Water because I think that’s going to be the star of the show.

The whole thing about bees is how you use the by-product – personally I don’t like to go anywhere near bee products that use bee venom (no matter what the ‘experts’ say, venom collection isn’t a nice process at all). Bees are constantly under threat from changing environments, so finding uses for what they produce is crucial in keeping our British bee populations healthy. The more resources and money we can put into bees and keeping their environments friendly, the more likely it is that we will see bees start to thrive again. I can’t imagine summer without the buzz of a busy bee.
