GOSH Sea Me Nail Polish

If you’ve got an excellent make-up memory then you might remember that last year, Superdrug and GOSH ran an Instagram competition for two people to create their perfect make-up colour. I’ve just received the winning nail polish colour, created by Danielle Graves from Leeds, and it’s stunning! Called Sea Me,  it’s a swimming pool turquoise with a shimmery twist – it almost feels textured. The shimmer is a mix of silver and green with occasional flecks of iridesence that gives off a pinky/blue twinkle. The shimmer is micro glitter, so no chunks in sight, but it catches the sunlight really well.

Congratulations Danielle! GOSH Sea Me Nail Polish is HERE for £3.99.

Tom Ford Orchid Soleil : Liquidised Holiday Vibes

Tom Ford Orchid Soleil Review

Those still searching for their signature summer scent might like to give Tom Ford’s Orchid Soleil a try. It’s heady but not cloying, exotic but in the “steamy, sexy nights” way instead of the “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts” sort of way. You know the exotic scents I’m talking about: Pina Colada crossed with a blowsy white floral. Perfectly lovely – and popular for summer – but this is not one of those.

Though Orchid Soleil is heavy on the white florals – it’s absolutely drenched in tuberose, for a start – it seems to have a sunny, happy disposition rather than anything that takes itself too seriously. Which is unusual for a Tom Ford scent – I don’t think I could describe any of the others, Private Blend or non, as “cheerfulness in a bottle”, but I’d stick that label on Orchid Soleil in the blink of an eye. It’s like a flask of condensed sunshine. A flacon of liquidised holiday vibes.

And just look at that rose gold bottle with its fluted sides and its inlaid label – true dressing table eye-candy. I thought at first that the glass had been covered in a sort of foil, but in actual fact when you hold it to the light it’s completely transparent. Rose gold in the light, transparent against it. Very chic.

You can find Orchid Soleil at most big department stores and online at Selfridges here – it’s £54 for 30ml or   £76 for 50ml. If you’re not crazy about the tuberose idea, then I can highly recommend these sexy and sultry summer scents. And there’s always the classic Bronze Goddess from Estee Lauder to carry you through to autumn if you prefer the whole “lost on a desert island” kind of vibe…

Skincare and Makeup: What’s On My Face?

bobbi brown serum foundation

Just a very quick look at what I had on my face (makeup and skincare) when I shot Tuesday’s Colab Competition video intro. I did it all in a bit of a rush because I needed to get the video out early in the morning, but I was nevertheless incredibly pleased at the way everything turned out. Especially the face base. So, from the first layer upwards, here’s what I had on my face.

Skin 1: Paula’s Choice “Resist” Replenishing Toner, £18.28 here. More what I’d call a moisturising water (or something) than a toner, because (rightly or wrongly) I always think of toners as being slightly acidic, perhaps a bit tightening or with some kind of exfoliating property. This one is refreshing, hydrating and extremely soothing – brilliant if you have to do a lot of makeup changes (which I do, when I’m filming a lot of videos at once) or if your skin feels a bit angry and sensitive. It’s my new face-calming super-tonic!

Skin 2: Time Bomb Powerball Intensive Moisturiser, £36 with free delivery at Amazon here. I fell in love with this intensely hydrating, non-greasy face cream last year – it worked on my combination skin, and it has been brilliant on my slightly drier pregnancy skin. It sits well underneath makeup and the moisturising benefits are long lasting – overall, it outperforms even some of my most expensive creams. Read the full review here.

Foundation: Bobbi Brown’s new Intensive Skin Serum Foundation. Full review coming up in the next week, but for now I can tell you that this a very glowy, very hydrating foundation with a gorgeous finish. It has a few failings, but I need to collect my thoughts and pore over my skin close-ups before committing myself to a verdict! If you like the way this looks and want to take a look at the foundation online then you can find it at John Lewis – it costs £40.

Bronzer: the bronzage you can see going on is thanks to one of Chanel’s new Les Beiges face powders – it’s not out for another week or so, but rest assured I’ll be getting you some before-and-after pics before it launches.

Eyes: I’m wearing the pinky-copper shades from YSL’s Rock Resillé palette (think this might have sold out as I can’t find it online), with the darker shades used as a kind of smokey liner. Lashes are painted in Givenchy’s Noir Couture 4-in-1 mascara (love it – I’ve been using it for over a year and it hasn’t even gone claggy. And before you all go “ewwww!”, do some research into makeup “sell by dates” and how big brands like you to keep throwing out your expensive products after just a few months. For your own good, obviously. You’ll probably come to the conclusion that some things need chucking, most are incredibly well-preserved. You can find Noir Couture online here.)

Lips? Lips are just bare. After all of my recent lipstick testing, I decided that I wanted more of an undone, unfinished look!

Can This Stuff Re-Build My Teeth?

enamel repair toothpaste review

Here’s an interesting one; a toothpaste that promises to – quite literally – rebuild your teeth. The Regenerate toothpaste and tooth serum can  – according to the blurb – regenerate tooth enamel by around 80% in just three days. An impressive claim and one that will no doubt excite the millions of people who have seriously knackered their tooth enamel up! Tooth enamel is actually the hardest substances in the human body, but once it’s damaged it can’t be restored. It’s under constant attack, and not just from things like fizzy drinks; apparently the fruits and fruit juices that have become a staple part of the modern diet are as much to blame. I actually spoke to my friend Sunny about this a while ago; she’s been a dentist for years and over that time has seen a massive increase in acid erosion, not just in adults but in children who have been given the “healthy” option of dried fruit snacks and fresh fruit juices. Acid erosion is happening to all teeth, all the time; it’s not some kind of rare disease or specialised problem – just an unavoidable fact of life. Wear and tear, if you like. You can help to lessen it (avoiding overly acidic foods and drinks, for example, or making sure that you don’t brush straight after your morning juice) but it’s very unlikely that you could completely bypass it!

Regenerate claims to rebuild tooth enamel with tooth enamel; its ingredients combine to form a crystal structure that is identical to tooth enamel’s key mineral, a substance called Hydroxyapatite. This wraps and sticks to the teeth, effectively “rebuilding” the enamel and filling in all of the little gaps and ridges that are being constantly caused by acid erosion. I’m genuinely quite wowed by this possibility, especially as three years ago my dentist told me that my front teeth were so worn away they were becoming almost transparent! My front teeth have always been really ridgey, too – whether this is a result of my frequent lemon-eating as a child (I know, weirdo) or my “addicted-to-Diet-Coke” phase*, I have no idea – and there are some teeth that are really sensitive where the enamel has been diminished.

IMG_3131

So yes, quite excited. I have no idea how I’m going to properly measure the results; I suppose my teeth will feel smoother and less sensitive? Perhaps the front ones will be less transparent when I shine a torch through them! Ha! Though it’ll have to be a small torch because it will need to be inside my mouth shining outwards and then there’s always the risk that I might choke on the torch, or a chip a tooth with it. Which would be ironic. The kit looks pretty easy to use; toothpaste is a no-brainer, obviously, but the serums that you have to mix together also appear to be quite simple. I already have custom-fitted trays so I don’t need to use the ones provided (you melt them in boiling water then shape them to your teeth) and the serums just require mixing together inside the trays to activate the ingredients. What could possibly go wrong? I’ll keep you updated!

Regenerate Toothpaste is £10 and you can order it from Boots.com here or Selfridges here. The Boosting Serum is £32, again at Boots or Selfridges.

*I drank enough Diet Coke between the years of 2008 and 2011 to fill a swimming pool. Disgusting, really, but I was truly addicted. I limited myself to one can a day, and then it crept up to two. Never more than that, but still. All that aspartame, crikey.
