Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydraplay Skin Perfecting Daily Moisturiser Review

If you are looking for a lovely lightweight moisturiser that packs a good punch of hydration and sits well under makeup, this is it!

I absolutely love the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour range and this one is no exception. When I first saw the packaging, I thought that the Elizabeth Arden Great 8 (the one with SPF35) had been relaunched and got very excited. However, this is a brand new launch and equally as good.

I still really want to know if Great 8 will come back though because I absolutely loved that SPF moisturiser. Maybe one day!

Anyway, back to the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydraplay. In a nutshell, this is the perfect summer moisturiser. It has a gorgeously light yet super hydrating texture, it sinks into the skin very quickly, and just makes the complexion look smooth and subtly perfected.

It’s brilliant under makeup, so will be amazing for summer nights on holiday as it controls oil nicely without any tightness. Also, it layers really well under a range of different sunscreens as it’s very light, so it’s great for day time too. Another absolute win from the Eight Hour franchise for me!

This is ideal for normal, combination and oily skins. It may not be quite enough if you have very dry skin.

I love the pump packaging. It makes it really easy to use and it’s nice and sleek so fits in a travel bag easily.

DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum Review

I have been trying out the DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum which is from the brand new and affordable skincare range created by Victoria Health. I am a big fan of it. Here’s what you need to know.

What is DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum?

DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum
DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum

DoSe by VH is a brand new collection of serums and oils that are all about improving skin health. Check out the full range here*.

The DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum:

  • Contains Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate which is a highly stable, fast-absorbing derivative of vitamin C
  • Provides antioxidant protection against oxidative damage from UV and pollutants
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate serum penetrates deeper than comparable Vitamin C serums
  • Works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stimulates collagen synthesis
  • Supports the skin’s natural moisture barrier
  • Inhibits melanin production
  • Firms and evens out tone
  • Brightens the overall complexion
  • Has a super lightweight texture
  • Non-irritating formula
  • 100% stable form of Vitamin C that won’t break down
  • Suitable for all skin types including sensitive

Key Ingredients

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate – helps tackle intrinsic and extrinsic ageing whilst brightening and boosting collagen production in the skin

Squalane – helps to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and lock in moisture to impart suppleness and flexibility to the skin

How to use it

This is a lovely serum to use. I find you only need one pump and I apply it directly on to clean skin after cleansing and before moisturiser and SPF.

My Review of DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum

If you love a lightweight yet super nourishing face oil, you will really enjoy this Vitamin C serum. It has a beautiful silky oil texture that is super fluid and glides over the skin effortlessly.

It feels very soothing and moisturising, and a little bit goes a long way. The formula gives the skin a beautiful instant glow and makes my complexion looks really plump and juicy.

The Squalane in the formula makes this serum really nourishing as well as brightening, and on days where my skin isn’t feeling too dry or dehydrated, it is enough on its own without moisturiser. It makes for a very quick morning routine.

I have actually been really enjoying using it under just a layer of sunscreen. In fact, the new Pai Skincare British Summer Glow SPF30* works really nicely with it, however, it layers well with a range of different sunscreen products and sits really well under makeup.

Top Tip:

If you have a foundation that has quite high coverage, or is a little too far on the matte side, you could mix in a small amount of this serum to sheer it out and add a good dose of radiance.

I find that the DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum feels really gentle on my skin which is important to note as some Vitamin Cs can feel quite aggressive on the skin. This one has actually been specifically tested for sensitive skin, so if you struggle with Vitamin C, I think this one will be a good one to try.

It is very well priced at £22 for 30ml, and as you only need a small amount, a bottle will last a good while. I love the glass packaging, and it looks simple and neat in the bathroom. It’s an excellent product.

No7 Derm Solutions: Tailored Care for Every Skin Type

No7 have been creating effective skincare products for as long as I can rememberNo7 have been creating best-selling skincare products for as long as I can remember, however, in 2023 they entered the Healthy Skin category in a simple yet serious way by creating the No7 Derm Solutions skincare range. This is a lineup of 9 dermatologist-approved skincare products and solutions for key skin concerns and designed to improve visible signs of unhealthy skin. There are also products to help with rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. Here’s what you need to know.

For Dry Skin: Hydrating with No7 Derm Solutions

I am always asked about which products suit dry skin, however, I think it’s important to identify whether your skin is genuinely dry and what the causes could be.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Dry skin can be caused by a number of different things including skin ageing, cold weather, exposure to the sun, harsh ingredients and more. In fact, dry skin is the result of damage to the skin barrier however that may occur.

No7 Derm Solutions has a simple selection of products that work with your skin.

How To Treat Dry Skin

The most important way to treat a dry skin condition (or in fact any skin condition) is to help maintain the skin barrier.

Dr. Eleanor Bradley, No7’s head of Science Research says that “Skin health is impacted by many different triggers which can cause an unhealthy skin cycle of oxidative stress and barrier damage leading to oiliness and blemishes, dryness, dullness, redness, uneven skin tone and rough texture.”

When dealing with an impaired skin barrier, it is vital to keep things simple. While there may be many reasons for dry skin, the No7 Derm Solutions products will provide an effective solution.

Simple Dry Skincare Routine

Cleanse: You should cleanse with the Derm Solutions Comforting Cream Cleanser which uses a blend of Ceramides, Niacinamide and Adaptogens to care for the skin whilst gently removing makeup and impurities. It will help maintain the skin barrier and leave skin feeling comfortable and clean.

Treat: No7 Derm Solutions Skin Balancing Serum has been designed to balance all skin types and has been clinically proven to target both dry skin and oily skin. It contains an antioxidant complex with green tea, vitamin E & C and Japanese Lily Turf. It leaves skin feeling comforted and balanced.

Moisturise: the No7 Derm Solutions 100-Hour Hydration Cream works to instantly hydrate the skin and improve the appearance of dryness, redness and uneven skin tone. It supports skin’s moisture barrier with 100 hours of hydration and is enriched with niacinamide to help leave skin feeling soothed and calmed.

Sensitive Skin Care with No7 Derm Solutions

Many of us have sensitive skin as a result of an impaired skin barrier caused by a multitude of lifestyle and environmental reasons. Understanding how to reduce the feeling of sensitive skin is key to finding the right skincare.

What Is Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin is skin that is more prone to redness and itching. You can experience a burning sensation and tightness and it is vital to treat your skin in a very gentle way if you are experiencing sensitivity.

How to Care for Sensitive Skin

A less is more approach is best when it comes to treating skin with sensitivities. It’s important to look for products with a simple ingredient list. Consistency is key, and you should avoid switching up your products too frequently.

Simple Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

With the No7 Derm Solutions range, you care for sensitive skin. It’s all about barrier support, mildness, hydration, soothing and calming.

Cleanse: No7 Derm Solutions Comforting Cream Cleanser is ideal for sensitive skin with its blend of Ceramides, Niacinamide and Adaptogens. It removes impurities very gently and helps maintain the skin moisture barrier.

Moisturise: the No7 Derm Solutions 100-Hour Hydration Cream is rich in ceramides and niacinamide. This moisturiser works to support the skin’s barrier and hydrates the skin instantly and over time.

Caring for Oily Skin: Clearing Treatment by Derm Solutions

No7 Derm Solutions Clearing Treatment
No7 Derm Solutions Clearing Treatment

If you’re wondering “why is my skin so oily”, and you are prone to blemishes, it might be time to try the No7 Derm Solutions Clearing Treatment which has been designed to effectively manage and balance oily skin.

No7 Derm Solutions Clearing Treatment Texture
No7 Derm Solutions Clearing Treatment Texture

It contains 2% Salicylic Acid and exfoliates the skin which addresses blackheads and excess oil. It also has Bisabolol, Licorice and Prebiotics, its formula leaves the skin feeling soothed and happy.

What is oily skin?

Oily skin can often look shiny and can have enlarged pores. It may also be blemish prone.

What causes oily skin?

There are many different causes that contribute to oily skin including stress, hormones, climate, genetics and also sometimes using the wrong products.

Even if skin is oily, you should still be very careful to use gentle skincare products and avoid stripping the skin, as this can actually encourage increased oil production. The No7 Derm Solutions range has a selection of products that will help tackle oiliness without compromising the skin moisture barrier.

What products to use for oily skin

Cleanse: You should cleanse oily skin with the No7 Derm Solutions Calming Gel Cleanser which hydrates the skin while removing impurities, excess oil and make-up. It helps maintain the skin barrier and leaves skin feeling comfortable and clean.

Treat: Whilst you can use the No7 Derm Solutions Skin Balancing Serum for dry skin, it’s also great for oily skins as it has been designed to balance all skin types and targets both dryness and oiliness. It contains an antioxidant complex with green tea, vitamin E & C and Japanese Lily Turf.

Moisturise: the Derm Solutions Lightweight Hydrating Lotion is ideal for oilier skin types. It has a light texture and works to instantly hydrate the skin plus offers 100 hours of hydration.

No7 Derm Solutions Skin Balancing Serum

Balancing Combination Skin

I have classic combination skin in that I have an oilier T-zone and drier peripheral areas. The No7 Derm Solutions range makes a skincare approach to combination skin pretty straightforward with very versatile skincare options.

What is Combination Skin?

This skin type often experiences an oily T-zone with enlarged pores. The outer face is usually normal but can also feel dry, tight and uncomfortable in areas.

What Product is Best for Treating Combination Skin?

I think the key product from the range here is the Skin Balancing Serum. It is great for dealing with oiliness and dryness which makes it expert at treating combination skin.

Skin Care Routine for Combination Skin

Cleanse: You can use either of the cleansers from the No7 Derm Solutions or in fact both. I think the cream cleanser makes a great first cleanse and you can use the gel if you want a second cleanser. Both products help maintain the skin barrier and leave skin feeling comfortable and clean.

Treat: No7 Derm Solutions Skin Balancing Serum is ideal for combination skin types as it targets both dryness and oiliness.

Moisturise: Again, I think for combination skins, your moisturising step is down to preference. Go for the Derm Solutions Lightweight Hydrating Lotion if you like a lighter product and choose the 100-Hour Hydration Cream if you like something richer.

Caring for Normal Skin with Derm Solutions

Although your skin may be a normal skin type, it is still important to help maintain the skin barrier and help it defend itself against lifestyle factors.

What is Normal Skin?

Normal skin usually feels comfortable most of the time, has an even texture, and feels neither dry nor shiny throughout the day.

What No7 Derm Solutions Product is Best for Normal Skin?

The 100-Hour Hydration Cream is a great option for normal skin types. It works to instantly hydrate and supports skin’s moisture barrier.

No7 Derm Solutions: My Verdict

No7 Derm Solutions Hero Product: Skin Balancing Serum
No7 Derm Solutions Hero Product: Skin Balancing Serum

In a world where skincare routines are getting increasingly complicated, the No7 Derm Solutions collection offers up a super simple, yet effective routine committed to the ultimate skincare objective of supporting the all-important skin barrier.

What are the signs of a compromised skin barrier?

Dryness, dehydration, oiliness, sensitivity and redness are all signs of an impaired skin barrier.

What is the hero product from No7 Derm Solutions?

No7 is expert in skincare and the brand always focuses on the serum product as the hero. In the case of No7 Derm Solutions this is particularly true because the Skin Balancing Serum has been formulated to be suitable for all skin types, and actually is able to target both dry and oily skin which is fairly unique in my opinion.

How does it do this? Often dryness and oiliness are symptoms of unbalanced skin, and the Skin Balancing Serum works to promote a more balanced complexion,

It’s a lovely lightweight, yet super hydrating serum. It is packed with antioxidants so brilliant at defending your skin.

What is No7 Derm Solutions Comforting Cream Cleanser like?

I really enjoy a cream cleanser, and this one has a lovely creamy texture that is rich enough to feel nourishing, and light enough to never feel heavy.

It is super gentle and great as a first cleanse if you are wearing makeup. It’s also lovely if you just wanted a single cleanse that imparts skin with hydration.

What is No7 Derm Solution 100-Hour Hydration Cream like?

I love the texture of this moisturiser. It feels really luxurious and nourishing, yet it sinks into the skin really effectively and leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated without any tackiness.

It sits really nicely under SPF and makeup, and also serves as a night cream to hydrate the skin overnight without making your face stick to your pillow!

Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel Review

I am always excited to try out a new high protection SPF product and when Allies of Skin said they had created the One, I had to try it out. Here’s the lowdown on Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel.

What is Allies of Skin The One?

Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel
Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel

Allies of Skin say, “Stop looking for The One, we’ve created it for you.” This is quite the claim, however, this new SPF 50 sunscreen has been in the works for six years and has rather a lot going on in terms of skincare ingredients too.

  • Completely transparent gel
  • Water resistant for up to 80 minutes
  • Provides high UVA/UVB protection
  • PA rating of PA ++++ (highest possible rating in terms of UVA coverage)
  • Supercharged with skincare ingredients
  • Conditions the skin
  • Blurs the appearance of pores
  • Doubles as a primer and makeup base
  • Uses a protective and breathable Second-Skin Membrane Complex

Key Ingredients

SECOND-SKIN ALOE MEMBRANE COMPLEX – base of the sunscreen which allows high protection with a light feel, a blend of evaporating emollients and non-comodegenic polymers

VITAMIN C – helps combat free radicals and protects the skin from UV rays and pollution

VITAMIN E – defends against free radicals and environmental aggressors

GREEN TEA – potent antioxidant to help soothe the skin and reduces free radical damage caused by sun exposure

LICORICE ROOT EXTRACT – helps soothe the skin, brighten and even out skin tone

NIACINAMIDE – helps to reduce the appearance of pores and fine lines, improves blemish marks, promotes ore even texture and supports skin barrier

RED RASPBERRY SEED OIL – rich in antioxidants, helps to retain moisture, and promotes youthful-looking skin

My Review of Allies The One SPF 50

Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel review
Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel review

I think the keys things with this sunscreen is that it is completely transparent and invisible, and it actually feels much more like a makeup primer than it does a sun protection product. This is pretty important because it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Normally for that kind of performance, you get a much heavier and thicker consistency.

Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel texture
Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel texture

The texture is that of a silicone-based gel that melts into the skin effortlessly and is entirely invisible on the skin. There’s no white cast, no shine and actually it just looks like you have nothing on your skin at all.

When first applied, it does feel quite silicone-y but as you work it into the skin it really lightens up and once it has sunk in to the skin, it feels super light.

I think it is important to note that you should let this sink in before going in with your makeup. This is not only so that it has time to set on the skin, but I also think it’s important to let your SPF product bond with your skin for a good amount of time before you start using things around with your makeup. Regardless of the SPF you choose.

It works really well under makeup. Everything apples on top effortlessly without any issues. It’s great to know that I have all that extra skincare too, and you could in fact skip serums or moisturiser if you really wanted to streamline things.

Allies of Skin The One SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel packaging

I love that this is water resistant. This means it will be perfect for outdoor exercise and also if you’re on holiday and going in and out of the pool or sea. In fact, I think that I will be saving this for times when I might be outside and exercising, or swimming in the sea, and I really need that high performance water resistance.

The reason I say that I’d reserve it for this is that it’s not the cheapest sunscreen, and I have more affordable options (Garnier Vitamin C Daily UV Fluid SPF50 Glow Review) that I can use day to day. It is £43 for 50ml which although expensive, it is extremely high performance, so worth when you need high performance like the cases I have stated. This is one to have in your stash when you know you will be more vulnerable to sun exposure than usual.

I think it’s an absolutely brilliant product, and if you have the budget, it would be the perfect daily go-to to make sure your is looked after and protected.

Vitamin D Deficiency

So I got my lab test back from my annual checkup with my doctor, and I thought everything turned out okay…except it wasn’t.  My Vitamin D level was below the specified range (30-100), so naturally I Googled everything there is to know about Vitamin D.

How to Get More Vitamin D

01

  1. Go outside between the hours of 10am-2pm.  This is the cheapest (it’s FREE) and easiest way of taking in extra Vitamin D.  If you’re working indoors with no exposed windows (like me), take a break outside or walk during your lunch hour.  Asians are deathly afraid of the sun, but like plants we need sunlight to keep us healthy.  However, you need to take things in moderation and only stay out in the sun long enough to have your skin turn the lightest shade of pink. This may only be a few minutes for those who have very pale skin.  You can get 30% of your Vitamin D from just being outside.  Additionally, Vitamin D can help prevent cancer (see this article).  It is very difficult to get enough vitamin D from food sources alone, as very few foods naturally contain vitamin D, and those that do will not contain enough to optimize your levels.
  2. Take Vitamin D supplements.  The Food and Nutrition Board recommends the daily intake of 600 IU for children and adults up to 70 years old, and 800 IU if you’re older.  There are different forms of Vitamin D you can take:
      • Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the type of vitamin D the body naturally produces in the skin in response to sun exposure.  Cholecalciferol is 87% more potent in raising and maintaining vitamin D concentrations and produces 2- to 3-fold greater storage than does D2.  However, Vitamin D3 supplements are not vegetarian and are not likely to be derived from American products. If an individual has ethical concerns over D3, D2 can be an effective replacement.
      • Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from fungi and plants grown through UV lights.  Good vegan substitution for your Vitamin D supplement needs.  Some studies showed that ergocalciferol is comparable to cholecalciferol.
  3. Eat foods high in Vitamin D.  Vitamin D is oil soluble, which means you need fat to dissolve it.  You also still need to take 600 IU of Vitamin D.
      • Cod Liver Oil – not vegan (duh), but it’s a popular food product that is high in Vitamin A and D.  It also has 1000 IU per 100g serving.
      • Fortified Cereal – vegan, but not always gluten-free.  Check the labels to make sure it doesn’t contain any processed sugar and hydrogenated oil.  Cereals can provide over 3000 IU per 100g serving (2 cups).
      • Fish like herring, salmon, mackerel, tuna, and your basic sushi meal.  Raw fish is better than cooked fish, and canned fish in oil is better than canned fish in water.  This is a great way for pescaterian to get their Vitamin D, but not so much for vegans/vegetarians.  IUs depend on the type of fish, but herring has the most at over 1500 IU per 100g serving.
      • Other seafood like oysters and caviar.  These provide 1/3 to 1/2 of your daily IU recommendation, with raw oysters at 320 IU per 100g (269 at 6 oysters), and caviar at 230 IU per 100g.
      • Fortified tofu and soymilk.  Vegan and gluten-free.  Fortified Tofu can provide up to 157 IU per 100g serving (44 IU per ounce). Fortified Soy Milk can provide up to 49IU per 100g serving (119 IU per cup). Amounts of vitamin D vary widely between products, so be sure to check nutrition facts for vitamin D content.
      • Salami, Ham, Sausages can be taken in moderation since they are high in sodium and cholesterol.  They provide a little Vitamin D, averaging about 9% of your 600 IU per 100g serving.
      • Eggs, Cheese, Butter and Milk are good source of protein and calcium, but Vitamin D levels tend to be less than 100 IU per 100g serving.
      • Mushrooms, especially white button mushrooms provide 27 IU per 100g serving.

So the bottom line is that people are not taking enough Vitamin to protect their health.  While people can make vitamin D from the sun, getting too much sun increases the risk of skin cancer, so it’s not always the best way to get vitamin D.  By comparison, Vitamin D supplements of 800 to 1,000 IU per day are fairly inexpensive and safe and provide a reasonable approach to avoiding Vitamin D deficiency.
