The Pros and Cons of the Home Massage

home massage review

Spoiler alert: there are really not very many “cons” to be had when it comes to the concept of a home massage. Especially a home massage done as proficiently and effectively as the one I had from Jo at Home Spa London: she arrived at my house at ten to twelve, I was on the treatment table by noon and my pregnancy massage, (finished at one o’ clock on the dot) left me so floaty that I had to have a two hour nap!

And the nap thing brings me to the most important “pro”: the fact that, after a home massage, you can just relax and not think about anything at all. Take a bath, take a nap, curl up on the sofa with a book – anything that’s quiet and serene and that continues the whole zen-like vibe that a good massage gives you. Because there’s nothing worse than having an hour of blissful, head-in-the-clouds “me time” and then coming crashing back down to earth when you realise that you need to be at a meeting at half-past three and you’re running late and you’ll have to catch the tube and change four times to get there in time. The back-to-reality stink of the city and hot crush of public transport almost entirely negates the good that the treatment does in the first place!

If I’m even remotely normal (Im probably not, but let’s quickly move on) then there will be quite a few people for whom the very last part of a massage is the best; the bit when you’re just drifting off to sleep and you’ve become entirely unaware of your surroundings. If your brain is doing anything at all then it’s saying please, PLEASE tell me there’s another half an hour to goAll I want to do is sleep! How nice would it be if – after you’d been gently summoned back to semi-consciousness- you could just roll onto a waiting day-bed, nice and warm, cover yourself with a little quilt and get some quality sleep? I know that most good spas do have the bits and pieces to facilitate this – a quiet room with day beds or what have you – but quite often there are people chatting or there’s annoying music playing or therapists come and whisper at you to ask you if you’d like some water or herbal tea or whether you’d like a magazine to read, or to remind you that there’s a jacuzzi at your disposal or to ask you whether or not you enjoyed your treatment…

No, there is nothing like a home nap. So it follows, I suppose, that there’s nothing like a home massage. Unless your house is particularly noisy or filled with children and animals or you get about twelve thousand delivery men ringing your doorbell every day. (Me.) That is the only “con”, really: you need to take measures to ensure that your home is as peaceful as possible, at least for an hour or two. I made Mr AMR take the dog for a very long walk and I put a massive notice on my front door forbidding any delivery drivers from ringing the bell; I made sure that there were at least two shut doors between me and the cat (he would most definitely have jumped on me) and I turned my mobile phone off and unplugged the house phone. God, it was bliss!

Jo from Home Spa London arrived with everything needed to recreate the spa experience; comfy massage table, floaty music, lovely soft towels. All I needed to provide was a suitable room – family AMR were mid-move at this point, so Jo and I set up in the spare room next to a propped up mattress and with Mr AMR’s power drill set in the corner! It was strange, though, how after about three minutes of blissful massage I completely forgot where I was. I hadn’t had any kind of massage or body treatment since becoming pregnant*, so at first it felt a bit strange to be touched, but Jo is a really experienced pregnancy masseur and I felt very safe and comfortable. (The bump and surrounding tissues were completely avoided; it was all about the back and shoulders and legs and hips!) I definitely want to do this again before the baby arrives – such a treat to be able to simply flop onto the couch afterwards. I thought that I would feel shortchanged, not being in a swishy spa environment, but the fact that I didn’t have to haul myself up and travel back home was just the best spa “perk” ever!

So, pros and cons of a home massage? Pros: you don’t have to travel to a spa, you can properly rest and relax afterwards and the time that you would have spent travelling back and forth can be spent (without any sense of guilt!) dozing and languishing in the lovely post-massage brain-fug. There’s also no changing room/locker allocation/talking to receptionist/being-shown-about-the-spa kind of faff; all of that stuff that can totally kill your relaxed mood. Cons: it’s often quite nice to go to a spa, for a change of scenery! And they are – usually – lovely and quiet, free from barking dogs and postmen and neighbours chatting about moles over the garden fence. But – as detailed above – it’s really quite simple to kill the noise in your home, if you give it a little thought and preparation. Overall, the pros most definitely outweigh the cons!

You can find out more about Home Spa London here – the pregnancy massage costs £60 for 60 minutes, incredibly reasonable.

7 Ways to Look Younger Using Just Makeup!

We all want to look our best, and by our “best” we usually mean younger. There are a lot of ways to help slow down the aging process. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, using sunscreen to help block harmful UV rays, and drinking a lot of water are just a few.  Getting the right amount of exercise also helps slow down the aging process.

Some women have the idea that the more makeup they apply the better they will look. But the truth is, using too much makeup can settle into fine lines and wrinkles that we acquire as we get older. This makes them stand out instead of covering them up. However, with the right tricks, turning back the clock can be as easy as opening your makeup bag.

1. Skip the Powder

As we age, we tend to lose the natural glow of our skin. You would think that powder, being lightweight and non-greasy would mean it’s a necessity but that’s not always the case. Powder can easily embed itself into the fine lines and wrinkles on your face, especially around your eyes and that will only exaggerate them. Also, adding powder to the skin can make it look cakey or dull.  Instead, opt for a foundation that is lightweight or a tinted moisturizer. This will help even out your skin tone without making it feel greasy and allow your skin to shine through.

My top pick: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation  (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora) (Nordstrom)

2. Apply a Creamy Pink Blush

Just like face powder, a powder blush can set into the fine lines and wrinkles that occur over time. It can also make your skin appear dull. Opting for a cream blush adds a glow to your cheeks without overdoing it. Make sure you pick the right shade for your skin tone no matter if you have light, medium, or dark skin. Using a pink color will add a nice flush to your cheeks that will give them a more youthful appearance. Just remember to use clean fingers when patting the cream blush to your cheeks to avoid getting any germs into your pores

My top pick: NYX Cream Blush in Boho Chic (Makeup Geek Store)

3. Curl your Lashes

Curling your lashes immediately makes the eye pop. With time, the eyelid begins to droop and eyelashes begin to flatten. You need to give the appearance of everything being pulled up. Curling your lashes gives the appearance of your eyes being more open and wide therefore looking more youthful.  Remember to apply a couple coats of mascara, but even if you don’t make sure you curl those lashes.

My top pick: Shu Uemura Lash Curler  (Amazon) (eBay)

Also: Tarte Picture Perfect Eyelash Curler (Amazon) (eBay)

4. Wear Plumping Lipgloss

Thinning lips is another sign of aging. Although you can’t turn back the clock and make your lips full like they once were, you can help give the effect of fuller more supple lips by using a plumping lipgloss. This will also help your lips feel fuller and appear thicker than normal. You will know when you have a good plumping lipgloss by the slight tingle on your lips. This lets you know it is working. You should however, avoid using dark colors as this will give your lips a shadow effect and actually make them appear smaller.

My top pick: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lipgloss in Bambi (Amazon) (eBay)

Also:  NYX Plump It Up Lip Plumper (Amazon) (eBay)

5. Conceal your Dark Circles

Whether it’s from lack of sleep, heredity, or age, having dark circles under your eyes will make you appear older than you actually are. Dark circles actually make your face look as if it is being drawn downward. The trick to correctly concealing them is not to use your normal concealer. Use a concealer that is peach or salmon color as this will help to counteract the blue color that most under circles tend to be. To add some brightness under the eye and make them appear more youthful, gently pat on a concealer over the corrector. Use one shade lighter than your natural skin color.  This will give automatically give a more youthful appearance to the eyes.

My top pick: Bobbi Brown Corrector in Peach (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora) (Nordstrom)

Also: Makeup Forever Concealer Palette (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora)

6. Wing Your Liner

Just like curling your eyelashes, winging out your liner can give an instant lift to your eyes. As we age, our eyes begin to somewhat droop.  By winging out your liner you are instantly giving your eyes the appearance that they are being pulled upward. Many women find that creating a winged eye is hard to do. The reality of it is having the proper tools and making sure to use a gel liner.  Use an angled eyeliner brush like the Makeup Geek Bent Liner Brush which sells for $3.79 USD. If you are uncertain how to use one of these brushes or how to achieve that cat eye, or winged liner effect, check out our video “How To: Use An Angled Liner Brush“.

My top picks: Makeup Geek Gel Liner in “Immortal” and Makeup Geek Bent Liner Brush

Also: Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in “Black” (Amazon) (eBay) (Nordstrom)

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer Review

Today I have another review for you all and this time it’s for NARS concealers. I recently reviewed the NARS Lip Pencils, but I also picked up some NARS concealers at the same time and wanted to share them with all my wonderful Muggies!

NARS 04

These are the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealers. They come in a wand type packaging much like the Maybelline Fit Me Concealers. They are very similar in size with the Maybelline being .23 ounces and the NARS being .22 ounces. I really like the packaging on these. They have a  sleek see through container that allows you to see the product and a matte finish handle on the wand. The matte finish not only looks great but is easy to clean as well. The wand inside is a flat doe-foot wand which I really like a lot. When you apply the concealer the flat part of the wand allows you to put it on the skin effortlessly.

The formula is very creamy and very pigmented so you don’t have to apply a lot to get the desired amount of coverage. This means a little will go a long way. I like the way it feels as it is super silky, smooth and it has no odor to it. These concealers would be best for under the eyes or for light touch-ups. If you have blemishes the concealers that come with this type of wand are to thin, you want this for more for delicate areas and that’s why under the eyes is best.

The best way to apply it is to sweep it on under the eye and take a fluffy dome brush like the Makeup Geek Soft Dome Brush and gently blend it into the skin. This hides the eye bags and brightens the area a little as well. The price on these is $28.00 which I think is far to expensive for what they are. They are good products if you want a good concealer and don’t mind spending the money or just want a high-end product.

The Budget Brush Brand You Need to Try

QVS Brushes Review

They say only an unskilled person blames their tools for preforming inadequately, but anyone who has ever been forced to use a poor quality make-up brush will quickly tell you that is not the case. Great make-up brushes are crucial in executing any make-up look well and the good news is that thanks to brands such as QVS Beauty you no longer need a bank loan to afford high quality brushes.

With the party season on the horizon you may be hoping to perfect a smoky eye look or perhaps something a little bolder – ’tis the season of glitter after all and with the help of QVS brushes I am going to share a few pointers and tips, on how to get the most from your brushes.

For the perfect base, be it powder, liquid cream or a combination of all three products, the one brush you want on your side is the QVS Perfection Brush £7 – if I could only own one foundation brush, it would be this. As you can see this is a dual ended brush; the smaller and somewhat flatter brush head is for applying concealer – again this works well with liquid or cream textures and can also double up in a pinch as an eyeshadow applicator. Due to the size of the flat brush, it perfectly fits into all those hard to reach facial contours such as the under-eye, around the nose and brow bone – perfect if you use concealer both to disguise blemishes and to highlight. The other end of the brush is by far larger and more dense and as such is ideal for applying liquid foundation and/or cream contour products.

QVS Brushes Review

The next step in my make-up routine – and perhaps yours too – is to set my foundation, as someone with oily skin, I have noticed that a loose setting powder is by far a superior option in terms of keeping oil at bay. Regardless of what option you choose, you will want and need a large fluffy brush to ensure that the powder is evenly dispersed over the skin – for that I recommend the QVS Powder Brush £9. The soft, fluffy bristles of such brush ensures that coverage is light, effective and efficient.

QVS Brushes Review

Now I’m no expert at eyeshadow application but I do believe in keeping tool use in this area to a minimum – for applying a base shade or a little glitter, you want a flat, dense and frankly sturdy brush but as the eye area is so delicate it should also be soft. For this reason I fully recommend the QVS Eyeshadow Brush £4 – it is perfect for quickly sweeping on a wash of colour, for intricate placement of glitter/shimmer or for those more skilled that I, blending a few shades together too. Much like all QVS brushes, this can be used for cream, liquid and powder formulations with ease.

No brush makes a smoky eye look easier than the QVS Blending Brush £8.49, it is perfectly sized to easily slot into the eye socked and as it is so soft and fluffy, it easily diffuses even the harshest of lines. I’m sure by now it goes without saying that you can use this with any medium of product you wish and for precision application of facial highlighter, this brush is the perfect size (think the cupid’s bow and tip of the nose).

Lastly, every make-up bag needs a great brow tool – at the moment I’m embracing the natural brow look and as such all I do is comb them through and maybe set with a little clear mascara. A great brow comb is not to be over looked and as such I suggest investing in the QVS Eye Brow and Lash Groomer £4 this sturdy comb tames even the bushiest of brows, as well as offering a lash comb to ensure that your mascara is never clumpy.

Now all you have to do is decide what colour of lipstick you’ll be wearing in the coming weeks and heck QVS even have a brush for that too which you can find here.
