The One Highlighter You Can’t Afford to Ignore

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal Review

I didn’t just miss the bus with Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal but several busses after that too. Yes I am late to the party but the main thing is, I’m here now and came bearing gifts – well the gift of review. I’ve mentioned it before, that in my eyes Becca Moonstone Shimmering Skin Perfector is just that perfection, and as such I’ve never really felt the need to branch out into new shades. Sure there was my misguided dabble with Champagne Pop – a beautiful shade on everyone apart from me so it seems – but other than that I have remained faithful to the almost silver glint of Moonstone. Well all of that has changed. I have seen the light and it is Becca Opal tinted.

It’s been some time since I’ve sat down and offered up a stand alone make-up review so excuse me if I am a tad rusty. I’ll keep any notes on packaging, short and sweet: the compact itself if approximately palm sized, has rubberised packaging (a little like NARS) and inside it features a large mirror. I don’t particularly find the packaging design to be pretty but it isn’t exactly offensive either; the one thing I will point out is that it doesn’t do a great job of protecting the physical highlighting powder – I kid you not, Instagram is awash with shattered pans of Opal, Moonstone and all the other available shades. This is one of those products that you will want to treat with kiddie gloves whilst in use – one accidental drop and it is curtains for your Becca powder.

I can’t recall who first drew my attention to Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal but I can wax lyrical as to when and why, I caved and made a pan my own. It was in Sephora, I swiped it onto the back of my hand out of curiosity and my knees all but went weak. Right there and then, I knew I had to make the almost-bronze tinged highlighter my own.

My guess – and it is just that as I haven’t conducted any research – is that Becca Opal is in someway influenced by the gem stone of the same name? If so, it would explain the multifaceted effect this highlighter achieves; in some lights it gleams golden, others silver/lilac and in some instances, it is almost salmon pink. In my opinion, Becca Opal is fairly neutral toned and an almost golden colour (at least in the pan), however a lot of its final appearance is dependant on your own complexion. I personally find I reach for this more when I’m tanned, opposed to when I am ghostly pale in the Winter. There is no doubt that this is an entirely universal shade but you may find that the deeper your skin tone is, the more stark Opal translates.

The real question is why should you had over £32 (yep really) for another highlighter (because I know you have more than one)? Real talk, it is truly special: from the difficult to dupe shade, all the way down to the finely milled texture that is a dream to apply. If like myself you have enlarged pores and have to be discerning with your highlighter choices, this is one you can apply free from worry – the same rule applies with fine lines. The texture is soft, forgiving and a dream to blend – I recommend teaming it with a fan brush for optimum results. Becca Opal is what I’d deem to be a fairly bold highlighting choice in that it is noticeable on the skin, and yet it manages to be striking without a hint of glitter or shimmer particles. I liken the end effect to molten metal or foil, frankly words nor images will do this justice until you are able to try it out for yourself.

Believe the hype and then treat yourself.

Competition: Win a Full Makeup Kit from The Beautyst

BeautySt Makeup Competition

Last week I created my three favourite makeup looks for new online beauty community and makeup store, The Beautyst*. I had instant love for The Beautyst because they stock By Terry; anyone who appreciates a bit of By Terry maquillage is alright in my book! The Beautyst have just launched in the UK (you can browse their website here) and to celebrate their launch, they are running a contest on Fashiolista – all you have to do is click the link, pick your favourite look and you’ll be in with the chance of winning a complete makeup kit from The Beautyst.

BeautySt Makeup Competition

I went for a red lip look first of all, using the absolute juciest red – Bang Bang from By Terry. It’s one of the Hyaluronic Sheer Rouge formulas, so it really plumps and smoothes out your lips and gives a shine without any gloss stickiness. It’s such a modern texture – very hydrating and light. I lined my lips first with a lipliner from Lipstick Queen, just to stop any colour from bleeding and to make sure that I got a crisp, neat outline to fill in. A touch of coppery NYX bronzer completed the look – I didn’t want too-pale skin with this, it needed to have a bit of life! The second look was a bronzey beach babe kind of affair; I went to town with loads of matte bronzer (in medium) from NYX over a BB cream from REN. Just very outdoorsy and natural, with a touch of blusher on my cheeks and RMS Lipshine on my lips to give the slightest flush of pink. The blush I used was from The Balm, a cosmetics company that I don’t tend to really see mentioned that much. But they make brilliant products, including what I think is one of the very best cream illuminators you can buy – the Mary-Lou Manizer.

Look three went a bit smudgey and messy, but I do love a dirty smokey eye! For this one I just piled on an absolute load of black kohl and shadow, both from NYX, and I used some brown shadows, too, from the Love in Paris palette, just to contour my eyelids and add a bit of interest. Foundation was By Terry Densiliss and again, there was a slightest tickle of bronzer on my cheeks just to get a bit of colour back into them. In all honestly, when I use Densiliss I never feel as though I need anything else on my skin, but it wouldn’t have been much of a makeup look if I didn’t make use of a few different products! (Ruth’s Ultimate Look: Densiliss Lick of Mascara) Which look do you like best? Wait! Don’t tell me – save it for Fashiolista and try and bag yourself a load of makeup. You can enter the contest here.

Skincare Is #BetterTogether: Why You Need A Complete Regime For Luminous & Youthful Looking Skin

PLUS WIN 1 OF 5 SETS OF NO7’S LIFT & LUMINATE
SPONSORED FEATURE

Great skincare has never been more important to me than it is now. Over the years I’ve upped my game and taken the time to understand the benefit a targeted regime can bring – both in the immediacy and long-term. As I hit my mid-thirties I’m starting to see those fine lines appear around the eyes, the gentle sagging of my jawline and the change in texture of my overall face; a bad night’s sleep can be seen instantly under my eyes, while a week or two of over-indulgence takes double that amount to recover from. However, it isn’t all doom and gloom; I’m fully embracing the changes that are appearing as a sign of experience and having lived my life, even if I want to give them a helping hand and minimise them wherever possible. One of the big things I’ve learned over the years is that skincare products really are #BetterTogether; that is, using a serum alongside an eye cream, moisturiser and overnight treatment will provide far better results than relying on a standalone product. Each provides the skin with targeted care and ingredients that have been included for specific benefit, but together just four steps can help totally change the look and feel of your skin.

SERUM: Often formulated with concentrated and hard working ingredients, this lightweight and easily absorbed product will help target issues (i.e. fine lines) and rectify them over time. As we start to age this becomes even more important and an essential part of any regime.

EYE CREAM: The skin around our eyes is incredibly thin, so usual moisturisers and products are too heavy, clogging the area and causing puffiness. An eye cream will help reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines, without overloading the delicate skin.

DAY CREAM: Providing a moisture hit that’s essential for maintaining radiance, a great day cream will lubricate the skin and help to plump the skin so your complexion looks refreshed. Most also contain SPF, which helps protect the skin from the sun’s damaging rays.

NIGHT TREATMENT: A rich and nourishing treatment that gets to work as you sleep is your secret weapon. Our bodies are far better at ‘repairing’ while we slumber as they’re less focused on keeping our bodies moving, meaning it’s the perfect time to lather on a hardworking cream and awake feeling refreshed.

Although I rarely use a singular brand for the entire offering (preferring to dabble in lots of different treats and bring you an edit of my faves,) one that I would always recommend is No7. Their ‘Protect & Perfect’ range is iconic in more ways than one; a decade ago it was the first skincare innovation that was independently proven without doubt to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. The press went mad; women went even madder. Boots sold a years worth of stock in two weeks, waiting lists filled up and bottles were being sold online for three times their value. It became a multi-award winning cult classic that’s adorned the bathrooms of millions of women across the globe – because, put simply, it works. They’ve expanded the range to include more targeted and even more effective products over the years, and it’s one of the affordable ranges I will always recommend to those wishing to invest in an effective skincare regime.

This January No7 has gone one step further and revolutionised its entire Lift & Luminate range (targeted at 40+ skin and including Day, Night and Eye Cream) to help women’s skin look at its absolute best; hot on the heels of the No7’s Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum (the UK’s No1 serum brand*,) they’ve added the same powerful technology to the skincare range as is in the serum. This new and improved blend of ingredients helps women achieve even better anti-ageing results that really deliver, especially when using all four of the products together. The unique ‘triple action’ technology makes Lift & Luminate No7’s most hardworking skincare regime yet; having been proven to help tackle the most common signs of ageing to deliver maximum results – wrinkles are visibly reduced, skin appears lifted and is noticeably firmer, while skin tone is more even.

Rather interestingly, when clinically tested 88% of women saw even better results when they used the new day cream with the Lift & Luminate serum – proving without a doubt that doubling up will give you even better results in as little as two weeks. So what are these magic ingredients that help skin look and feel so much better, I hear you ask? Well all of the products are enriched with Matrixyl 3000, No7’s most effective anti-wrinkle technology that’s a powerful peptide blend which helps restore more youthful looking skin; additionally Hyaluronic Acid helps provide additional skin-firming benefits through its powerful water retaining abilities, hibiscus extract helps support collagen production, making skin look and feel smoother and firmer, while a ‘Lightening Complex’ (containing Indian gooseberry and Vitamin C) works to help rebalance melanin content in the skin, providing a more even skin tone and a fading of visible pigmentation.

As Lift & Luminate isn’t quite suitable for my skin type just yet, I’m giving a stash to some of my loved ones so they can put it to the test on my behalf in the next few weeks and report back – because we’re all #BetterTogether right? What’s even better is that nine other bloggers from my Thirty Plus collective are also putting the product to the test, so you can pop on over to their sites to see how they’re getting on too. (Links are below!) Even better than that? I want FIVE of you guys to get involved too, putting the entire regime through its paces in the coming weeks so I can share your stories and thoughts here on London Beauty Queen; I’ve got FIVE full sets of all four products up for grabs (worth £93.90) so if you want to be a part of the experience, just enter via the widget below. No7 believe that not only skincare is #BetterTogether, but we are too – so it’s great to see an opportunity for so many women to come together and take the first step on a joruney together. I can’t wait to see the results.
