Just a quickie for beauty buffs – MUFE launches in the UK towards the end of March. No more searching Sephora and Ebay for this one… it’s heading to Debenhams! There’s plenty of time to recommend top picks if you haven’t tried the brand, but this one’s going to keep Debenhams beauty hall footfall up! For as long as I can remember, bloggers have been hoping for this!

Another day, another opportunity to win something amazing for your Mum and give it to her for Mother’s Day. In actual fact, there’s something to be won every day this week because Etsy*, the online Aladdin’s Cave of all things handmade, unique and special, are running their #EverydayMum campaign, with a £50 voucher up for grabs every day until Sunday and a £100 voucher and bespoke gift for one lucky winner at the end of the week!

It’s a particularly poignant Mother’s Day for me, this year, because it is slowly dawning on me (as my baby bump grows ever more huge and the vein network in my chest continues to develop into something resembling a map to the A roads of Great Britain) that I am going to be a Mother. It’s strange (and slightly shortsighted) that when you try to get pregnant for a long time – and I’m talking years and years and years here – your main focus becomes the pregnancy and you stop even really thinking about what comes afterwards. You’re so intent on conceiving and then getting through that choppy old first trimester that you don’t have the time or energy – or perhaps optimism – to even imagine what it would be like to actually be a Mum. Perhaps I’m just speaking for myself, here, but when you’ve had a few struggles in the old baby-making department, it’s almost as though you can’t – or daren’t – think further than a few weeks ahead.

And so yes: Mother’s Day. Hopefully this time next year Mr AMR will be thinking to himself, ooh, what shall I get Ruth for Mother’s Day “from the baby”? And then the baby, who will obviously be incredibly advanced for 9 months old and also have impeccable taste, will gurgle “Chanel bag, Daddy! Chanel bag!” Hohoho. Though something seems to happen to people when they become parents, and they learn to treasure the rustic and the botched-together, don’t they? It’s the thought that counts. Wooden clothes pegs with faces scribbled on them, egg-box dinosaurs, socks that you have to imagine are actually snake puppets. I have a little chuckle when I think of the things I made for my Mum with my brother and sister – she must have struggled hard to keep a straight face, sometimes.

I do love that on Etsy (I’ve been having an extensive browse!) you can get the kind of stuff that has the same feel as those thoughtful, personal gifts you might think up yourself, but isn’t – to be frank – sh*t. Because let’s be honest, for most of us the presents we’d manage to cobble together with our rudimentary art skills and our GCSEs in woodworking would probably not be that impressive. (And there are probably very few of us who would be able to knock out THIS, which has to be the best dolls house in the whole entire world. I need it in my life.)

The people at Etsy very kindly allowed me to personalise my own gift to give to my Mum this Sunday, and after much deliberation I went for a rainbow-papered notebook bound in the most beautiful, soft leather, made by Jackdaw Bindery. The little quote on the bottom, Never a Lonely Day is actually a short version of what I was going to write, which was “Mum: since you discovered Whatsapp I’ve never had a lonely day”, but apparently I was going overboard on my lettering quota!

It’s true though – the Whatsapp thing – my Mum has taken to mobile technology like a crazy, drought-maddened duck would take to water. She sits there having about thirty Whatsapp conversations at once, the phone bleeping and chiming and flashing away, her fingers dancing frantically across the keyboard. But all joking aside, I feel so utterly blessed to have a Mum who wants to be involved and keep on top of everything: she watches over her brood with an eagle-eye, and even at my grand old age of thirty-four I feel secure – and reassured – knowing that she’s got my back. She’s truly my best friend and every year brings changes to our relationship – I can’t wait to see what this year, with the new baby, brings.

Shabon Roller

Prepare to be absolutely speechless when you see what the Non-F Shabon Roller soap can do! It’s a recent arrival at Victoria Health who have clearly got their eye on the Asian beauty trends – this is one of their finds on a discovery trip to Japan. I’ll put my hands up right now and say I have no clue why it has such a strange name – Non-F Shabon Roller doesn’t exactly slip off the tongue.

The cleansing soap is a blend of marine collagen, white jelly fungus (fungus is a BIG trend in Japan – just read it as ‘mushroom’ because it’s a good approximation), ionized minerals and Lipidure (a water soluble polymer with structure similar to cells). The soap leaves a protective film over the skin (I haven’t tried this yet so I can’t describe what it’s like.. but I have one on the way that I cannot wait to try) and generally calms, hydrates and protects the skin.

In case you missed all the promotions of the event, Clean Cult was organised by the Call It Vanity & Clean Beauty Co. girls as a niche event to showcase the best of green beauty right here in the UK. There were 10 brands there on the day showing off their wares, with nibbles, superfood cocktails and lots of chance to chat and catch up with fellow green beauty babes, too. I arrived at 3pm and stayed until 6 and it just wasn’t long enough, I was so busy chatting and catching up that I didn’t even get to meet with all of the brands or have a manicure from Kure Bazaar! But it was still a fab afternoon so I really can’t complain. 😉

I didn’t get any fancy photography shots as I was too busy having a good time – but here’s the few pictures that I did get…

We had a good chat with the lovely founders of Amly learning about their mist and even got to try some of the silver-rich spring water that they use in it (the toner smells so divine by the way – it’s on the list to try asap!). Keep an eye on this brand as their upcoming mists are going to be amazing too!

Finally, no beauty blog event is complete without some swag. I especially love the Ecotool brushes! my new go-to eye brushes for sure and hello look at all the tiny makeup from Jane Iredale! I got a miniature of my all-time fave just kissed lip tint and I’m super excited to try the Pure Lash Extender & Conditioner. Can all makeup be this small? Then I would actually buy it and use it up.
