What to Do When Decluttering Feels Too Overwhelming

Decluttering can feel freeing, but it can also feel overwhelming before you start, especially if have a lot of clutter. I’m going to share some tips on how you can make your decluttering session productive, without feeling too overwhelmed.

What to Do When Decluttering Feels Too Overwhelming

Get Clear On Why You Want Less

Before you start clearing anything out, it helps to understand what you’re really aiming for.

Decluttering is easier when it’s connected to something meaningful, whether that’s a calmer home, more room to think, or simply less time spent managing your belongings.

Take a moment to notice which areas of clutter frustrate you most and what they stop you from doing day to day.

It can also help to acknowledge that some items carry emotions, memories, or a sense of obligation.

That doesn’t mean they have to stay forever. When you compare what you’re keeping with the life you’re living now, the choices often become clearer.

Set A Timer And Stop When It Rings

Decluttering can feel heavy because it has no natural endpoint. A timer gives the session a clear finish line.

Pick a short window—10, 15, or 25 minutes—start the clock, and focus only on what you can do in that time.

The goal isn’t to overhaul a whole room, it’s to make a small dent without draining your energy.

During the timer window, stick to simple actions: put items back where they belong, add obvious donations to a bag, recycle rubbish, or group like things together.

Skip deep organizing and avoid getting pulled into side tasks. When the timer rings, stop—even if you could keep going.

Ending on time keeps the process sustainable, makes it easier to start again tomorrow, and helps you build steady momentum without burnout.

Choose An Easy Category First

When decluttering feels overwhelming, starting with something simple makes a real difference.

Choose a category that’s easy to identify and quick to complete, such as T-shirts, mugs, toiletries, or old magazines.

Working in categories is less frustrating than bouncing around the room, and finishing one small group gives you a clear sense of progress.

If you need a starting point, clothing is often the easiest because you already know what you reach for and what you avoid.

After that, move to items with obvious limits like books you no longer want to keep, extra kitchen tools, or products that are out of date.

Leave sentimental things for later, when you’ve built confidence and decision-making feels less tiring.

Create A No Brainer Donate Box

One reason decluttering drags on is the constant decision-making. A donate box helps because it gives you a clear place to put items you already know you won’t keep.

Choose a sturdy bag or box, keep it somewhere easy to reach, and use it for things that are in good condition but no longer useful to you—clothes that don’t fit, duplicates, books you won’t read again, and homeware you never choose.

It also helps to decide where donations will go before the box is full. When you have a drop-off spot in mind, it’s easier to let items leave the house instead of shifting them from pile to pile.

As a simple rule, if it’s still usable, and you wouldn’t buy it again today, it can go straight into the donate box without overthinking.

Let Yourself Keep The Maybe Pile Small

Some items won’t feel like an instant yes or no, and that’s normal. A maybe pile can help, but only if it stays small.

Give it a firm limit, such as one basket or one small box. If that space is full, pause and make decisions before adding anything else.

This keeps hesitation from spreading across the room and turning into another project.

When you sort the maybe items, use a few simple filters. Think about whether you’ve used it recently, whether it solves a real problem in your current life, and whether you would choose to bring it home again.

It also helps to notice when an item is tied to guilt, obligation, or old versions of yourself.

Set a date to review the box soon, while the reasons are still fresh. A contained maybe pile gives you breathing room without creating a new source of clutter.

Why Palermo Might Be Your Perfect Holiday Spot

Palermo offers a rare mix of history, culture, and everyday life that feels both rich and unfiltered.

Located between the mountains, and the sea, Palermo blends both grand architecture designs, with busy markets, quiet courtyards and long sunlit streets.

Arab, Normal and Italian influences shape the buildings, food and traditions, from golden beaches to lively neighborhoods fully of character.

Why Palermo Might Be Your Perfect Holiday Spot

Sun Sea and Sand Nearby

Palermo sits close to a beautiful stretch of coast. Mondello is the city’s best known beach, with pale sand, shallow water and a backdrop of beautiful low hills.

Locals swim before work, families gather in the afternoons, and small boats sail slowly across the bay.

Beyond Mondello, quieter coves and rocky edges of coast offer space for snorkeling and sailing.

The shoreline changes character through the day, from bright and busy in the morning to calm as the evening light settles over the sea.

Eating Like a Local

The Palermo local markets are a must-visit, with artichokes, blood oranges and fresh seafood.

Street food is part of everyday life, not a novelty, and dishes like panelle, arancini, and sfincione are bought casually on the way to work or home.

Sit-down meals tend to be simple and generous, often based on long-used recipes that change with the weather.

Coffee Breaks Done Properly

Small bars open early, serving quick espressos to people on their way to work, while others enjoy cappuccinos and pastries at outdoor tables.

Many cafés still feel unchanged, with marble counters, old mirrors, and staff who know regulars by habit.

Alongside classic espresso, you will find granita with brioche, especially in warmer months, and strong iced coffee sweetened with almond milk.

Street Life You Cannot Ignore

Markets spill into narrow lanes, with vendors calling out prices and passing traffic slowing to fit around them.

Music drifts from doorways, small squares, and passing radios, while conversations overlap in every direction.

Religious processions, local celebrations, and informal gatherings appear regularly, changing the feel of a street from one day to the next.

Historic buildings form a steady backdrop, but it is the people who give the city its changing rhythm.

Quiet Corners Among the Chaos

Even as Palermo surges around you, the city always offers a place to exhale. You slip into peaceful neighborhoods just a few streets away from the markets and feel the noise fall behind you.

Nearby, serene parks like the Villa Giulia invite you to sit under palm trees and watch locals stroll by.

You’ll find hidden gems in quiet cafés tucked into side alleys, where elderly owners pour strong espresso and let you linger.

Courtyards shaded by citrus trees turn into tranquil retreats for reading or planning your next walk.

In these softer corners, church bells replace car horns, conversations drop to a murmur, and you suddenly realize Palermo’s intensity makes its calm moments feel even more precious.

Avora Immersive Experience

Hello hello everyone!

I first saw the experience about 2-3 years ago on my fyp and its always been on my mind, this year for Yasmin birthday I finally decided to do it!

Without giving too much away, the Avora immersive experience is one of the popular experiences in London.  The concept is simple: you are a top research scientist and you have been invited to a trip to Avora, to learn about the planet and the people. The experience comes with 3 drinks and these can be with or without alcohol. They will ask your preference at the door. And please remember to bring your ID! Don’t let the outside throw you off! I legit thought I was in the wrong place

This was my first immersive experience and whilst I didn’t know what to expect I was really excited. The actors were phenomenal- they really get into character and its very interactive- your willingness to also get into it with the actors and your group will make your experience more enjoyable. I was called up to be the doctor who brought the music- LMAO!

Avora is a beautiful planet filled with very curious Avorians. You learn about them, explore their world and ‘drink to survive’

My overall experience is really positive. The actors were great! The experience starts pretty much once you book because you will receive an NDA to sign prior to your experience! The drinks were really good ( strong for me haha) and you get given a special spacesuit to complete your experience! It very much gave Avatar vibes.  I highly recommend it.

My only con was that I wish there was more of Avora to explore. In total we went into 3 rooms with a new drink in each room but I wish there were 5 rooms/areas to explore with the drinks more spaced out.  The tickets are kinda pricey £49.50 ( peak time) but think of it as paying for the drinks with a show. I think tickets are slightly cheaper during the week.

We saw Alcatraz next door- I think they are from the same company, another popular immersive experience- I’m not quite sure if I want to do that one.

Will you make accept the call and brave the journey into Avora?

Catch you later

Solo Diaries: Peter Harrison Planetarium & Lunch

Hey hey everyone, I hope all is well.

Today’s post will be the start of my new series: solo diaries! This year, I set myself a goal to do 2 solo outings and so far I have crossed one of these off! Actually, I did 2 things in 1 outing but it still counts as 1 haha.

Dear diary

For my first solo outing, I went to the Peter Harrison Planetarium which has been on my list for so long! This place reminds me of Raj from Bang Bang Theory lmao. I went for the meet the neighbours show, a show about our solar system. It was much too short but very interesting, and I think I will go back for the sky tonight show.

So how did I feel doing this? I felt a bit awkward at first but not lonely but this feeling quickly disappeared as I reminded myself why I was doing this. After the show I went for a solo lunch at Miller and Carter, the lunch set menu is amazing btw! 3 courses including a steak for £23! I thought lunch would be a bit more of a challenge but girl I never thought I would enjoy it so much. I enjoyed my steak, watched a show, then some random man walked by and said hello? LOL. I enjoyed it so much Ive booked another solo lunch at a place that’s been on my list for at least 4 years!

Tbh even though I set these goals for myself at the start of the year I never really took steps to doing them. I am used to going out alone mostly for makeup windowing shopping etc but not to do an actual activity( my last solo activity was 2023? I think!) anyway what prompted me to book this was Tracee Ellis Ross talking about her solo travel experiences. It just reminded me of my first solo trip years ago which lead to so many wonderful experiences and meeting lovely people, I don’t know what happened along the road for me to loose that and become dependent on going out with friends. Anyways I glad Tracee’s video came on my fyp because it’s reignited my passion for solo experiences again.

The planetarium was great, and it seemed really popular for families and kids. You then after Greenwich Park right outside so you can easily have a walk or picnic afterwards. Parking is abundant close and very cheap. Well, cheaper than what I thought it would be!

Im really glad I did this and looking forward to my next solo outings!  As much as I love planning things with friends, it was so freeing to juts decided what I want to do and went and simply GO.  I can finally start to cross items of my list and not feel guilty adding new places lool.

Love always

Sarah

Tenerife in 3 Days

I finally went to Tenerife and it was awesome! And in this post I will be sharing some activities to do and the amazing hotel we stayed in.

Before we begin I want to thank my friends again for planning this trip as my birthday surprise! I wasn’t told the destination until we got to the boarding gates lol and they sorted out everything! Diane & Miriam thank you girls again! And my surprise set up was amazing!

Tenerife has a reputation for been a booze filled getaway but its totally possible to do the exact opposite. If this is your vibe stay tuned

Hotel

We stayed in the beautiful Green Garden Eco Hotel. Its in an excellent location ( Playas las Americas) not too far from the beach but I wont recommend walking in that heat. The hotel has a lot of amenities including a free shuttle bus to Siam water park. The staff are excellent and made our stay pleasurable! They were so patient with us wanting to practice our Spanish with them too lool( Duolingo streak society anyone? lol). Plus they had a mini arcade on site and we LOVED it. who knew I was so good at shooting loool. There’s a mini market on site too. Our family villa was huge and had a little garden area which we turned into our photoshoot studio LOOL

Activities

Whale & Dolphin Watching with White Tenerife tour guide company- Tenerife is the home of the pilot whales because of the excellent quality of water. From April to September, we were informed Dolphins migrate to the area too. We saw a lot of whales and it was beautiful and we were extremely lucky to see Dolphins too! I have always wanted to see animals in the wild natural habit and seeing them was a bucket list moment for me

Stargazing with Tenerife stars tour guide company- I didn’t know Tenerife was known for this but it is a very popular activity there. The whole trip starts off just before sunset so you stop at a crater for amazing sunset views over the nearby islands before heading to the national park to wait for dark and the stars illuminate the skies. Guys we saw Starlink which looked awesome in the sky but even better we saw shooting stars! Living in a city like London, you forget how light polluted our night sky is so seeing the stars in their numbers so clearly was so amazing. I will give iPhone props here because the pictures turned out great ( its still a cult I refuse to join). Our guide was so funny but knowledgeable

Eating & drinks

It was a packed trip so we didn’t eat out much but I definitely recommend Almar, rooftop restaurant with amazing sunset views! The food and drinks were amazing and I loved my birthday dessert!

So a quick getaway in Tenerife without booze filled parties? Yes its definitely possible. Overall thoughts for Tenerife

  • Taxis are cheaper than ubers
  • Sunscreen is needed of course
  • 100% worth it! GO FOR IT

It was a quick trip, but my looks were still on point! Always
