The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum Review

When I visited the DECIEM labs in Toronto, I had the absolute treat of trying the brand-new The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum ahead of its global launch. If you’re already a fan of The Ordinary’s science-first skincare, you’re going to love how they’ve brought that same clever approach to lip care. Here is everything you need to know. It is available now.

What is The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum?

The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum
The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum

The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum is the brand’s first-ever lip-focused exfoliating treatment. Instead of relying on abrasive scrubs, this gentle serum uses chemical exfoliation with Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) to smooth, hydrate, and plump the lips.

This makes it a new-generation alternative to lip scrubs. It is more hydrating and far kinder to the delicate lip area. And of course, it comes at The Ordinary’s famously fair price point:

  • £7.60 GBP | $8.50 USD | €9.80 EUR | $12.10 CAD | $14.60 AUD

Why Do Lips Need The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum?

Our lips are much thinner than the rest of our skin, with only 3–5 cellular layers compared to around 16 on the face. They also don’t contain oil glands, which makes them especially prone to dehydration, flakiness, and discomfort.

That’s why The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum is such a clever innovation. It works to gently remove dead skin while boosting hydration, helping lips feel smooth, soft, and healthy.

Joe Basham, Senior Science Communications Manager at DECIEM, sums it up beautifully:

“Lip skin is thinner and more delicate than facial skin, making it more vulnerable to water loss. PHA’s offer both gentle exfoliation and hydration support, gently renewing the skin’s surface while helping to promote its natural renewal.”

The formula features a blend of smart, skin-loving actives:

Daucus Carota Sativa Extract – rich in antioxidants and gives the serum its pretty pink hue (which disappears on application).

Gluconolactone (PHA 5%) – the star ingredient, a gentle acid that exfoliates while supporting hydration.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Citric, Malic & Tartaric Acid) – smooth texture and refine the lips’ surface.

My First Impressions

At the DECIEM labs, I tested The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum and was instantly taken by its oil-serum-gel texture. It melts into the lips effortlessly and leaves behind a softly tacky film that feels nourishing and protective rather than sticky.

There’s a mild tingling sensation, but it’s comfortable, and actually adds to that sense of the serum working. The end result? Lips that look plumper, smoother, and more hydrated.

Results After Testing

With The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum, I’ve noticed a smoother lip texture and a naturally plumped and healthy-looking finish. I have been testing a different lip product that I am launching for my brand REESON for about a year, which has meant I don’t currently have any dryness or flakiness, but I think this lip serum would be very effective on that if you suffered with that.

How to Use The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum

  • Apply a thin layer onto clean, dry lips in the PM
  • Allow it to dry before applying a lip balm
  • Use two to three times per week

FAQs About The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum

Can I use The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum every day?

The Ordinary recommend using this every other day at night.

Will The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum sting?

You may feel a light tingling, but it’s very comfortable and the tingling doesn’t last long.

Does The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum replace lip balm?

It’s more of a treatment than a balm. You can still layer a nourishing balm over it if you like.

Is The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum tinted?

No, while the serum looks pink in the tube, the colour disappears completely on application.

What is The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum release date?

Final Thoughts

I’m really excited about The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum. It’s exactly what I’d expect from The Ordinary – smart, affordable, and rooted in real skincare science. If you’ve struggled with scrubs or constant dryness, this is such a brilliant upgrade for your routine.

I love to let it dry and then apply my favourite lip balm from La Mer. It’s a serious case of a high low combo! If you are looking for a lip balm, but want something more affordable than La Mer, have a read of Best Lip Balms for Dry Lips for 2025.

Best Lip Balms for Dry Lips for 2025

*Links marked with asterisks are affiliate links, these help Ree with running costs of the blog

Having a good lip care product that works on dry, chapped lips is key to caring for the thin, delicate skin on the mouth and keeping your pout looking perfect. I have tested quite a few different ones, and here’s my list of the best lip balms for 2025.

Why do lips get dry?

Dry lips are mainly caused by a range of environmental factors including dry or cold weather, sun damage, if you lick your lips too much, or some foods you eat.

Lip skin is particularly vulnerable to external influences because it is super thin and delicate.

I find that a good lip balm is an essential part of my kit, especially if I want to feel comfortable and for my lipstick or lip colour to look good. I have included all my favourites here.

Best Tinted Lip Balms for 2025

If you want to ultimate skincare and lip colour hybrid, you will love the new REESON Glossing Balms that I just launched for my own brand. I have been using the final formula for 8 months, and I haven’t had dry lips since!

The tiniest touch of this balm goes a long way, and the finish is so shiny that it looks like you are wearing an amazing lip gloss. It feels super nourishing and for a more makeup-y look, it is perfect paired with a lip liner.

Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm Review

I recently got my hands on the Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm, and as a body care obsessive, I have to say it ticks all the boxes for me. Here is everything you need to know.

What is Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm?

What is Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm?
What is Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm?

This is a rich body balm created for use all over the body, and designed to boost filaggrin. It is suitable for even the most sensitive skin, including eczema-prone.

It is formulated with colloidal oatmeal, mondo grass and niacinamide and works to rejuvenate the skin and help to restore the skin’s natural barrier:

  • Intensely moisturising
  • Fragrance-free formula
  • Enriched with colloidal oatmeal
  • Provides a soothing effect on the skin
  • Helps to calm soreness
  • Ideal for dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin
  • Suitable for all skin types

Key Ingredients

Mondo Grass – helps restore the skin barrier and boost the skin’s natural filaggrin

Niacinamide – great for barrier support & helping improve skin texture, while reducing irritation and addressing dullness

Colloidal Oatmeal – provides a soothing and anti-inflammatory action, and helps calm irritation and redness

My Review

My Review of Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm
My Review of Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm

I love a good rich body product and this one suits me down to the ground!

Texture & Performance: What I Loved

The first thing I noticed about the Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm is the rich and balmy texture. In the pot it has a lovely firmness, which makes it feel really substantial and luxurious. As soon as you scoop some out and begin to massage it into the skin, it melts in beautifully and spreads with ease, without feeling sticky or heavy.

Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm Texture

Once applied, it leaves the skin feeling super soft and deeply comforted. I love how it provides long-lasting moisturisation that you can still feel hours later, even into the next day. It really does create that cushion of hydration that dry, sensitive skin craves.

Another thing I adore is how well this balm suits sensitive and eczema-prone skin. The unfragranced formula means there’s no irritation, and instead it delivers a calming and soothing effect that makes the skin feel much more balanced and comfortable.

Because I fake tan regularly, my skin can often become extra dry and prone to flakiness. A formula like this, that is rich, effective, and melts effortlessly into the skin, is exactly what I need to keep my skin smooth and hydrated so my tan looks even and lasts longer. For me, this balm will be a go-to for keeping dryness at bay while still feeling like a treat to use.

How I Use It in My Routine

I’ve been reaching for the Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm at the moments when my skin needs the most comfort. For me, that’s usually straight after a shower, when skin can feel a little tight. Because the texture is rich yet melts into the skin so easily, it’s ideal for locking in moisture while my skin is still slightly damp.

I like to massage it generously over my arms and legs, focusing on any areas that tend to get extra dry like my elbows, knees, and shins. I also love using it before bed, almost like an overnight treatment. By the morning, my skin always feels soft, calm, and nourished.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is this balm safe for eczema flare-ups?

The product information states it is best used between flare ups, not during acute weeping / broken skin. Always patch test, and if your eczema is severe, consult a dermatologist.

Does it contain fragrance?

No, it’s unfragranced. That’s great for sensitive noses and skin.

Is it vegan & cruelty-free?

Yes, the product is labelled vegan.

How often should I use it?

Daily maintenance is recommended. After showering, or when skin tends to dry out. For very dry patches, apply two-times a day or layer overnight.

What makes this balm “filaggrin boosting”?

The formula includes ingredients like niacinamide and Mondo Grass root extract which are claimed to help stimulate natural filaggrin production. This helps support skin barrier strength.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Nursem Ultra Caring Body Balm is a standout product in the rich balm / intensive moisturiser space. The blend of clinical actives (niacinamide, colloidal oat, allantoin etc.), combined with very nourishing butters, gives a luxurious feel and powerful hydration.

For me, someone who fake tans and has dry skin, this balm ticks almost all the boxes. If you want something that feels like skincare and pampering, and you don’t mind a richer texture, this is definitely worth the investment.

Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible Review

When it comes to daily skincare, a reliable sunscreen is non-negotiable. Finding one that offers broad-spectrum protection without compromising on comfort, however, can be challenging. Enter the Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible, a lightweight, high-performance formula designed not only to shield against UV damage but also to protect skin from pollution and environmental aggressors.

What is Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+?

What is Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible?
What is Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible?

An ultra-lightweight, fluid SPF50 facial sunscreen offering advanced high protection.

  • Provides an overall skin protection against UV rays, visible light, infrared light & pollution
  • Contains the detox science to strengthen the skin’s natural detoxification mechanism for more radiant skin
  • Formulated not to cause irritation, including the eyes
  • Ultra dry touch
  • Invisible with no white cast
  • Excellent make-up base
  • 8h skin hydration
  • All day matte sensation
  • Non-comedogenic

How to use it

Make sure you give the bottle a good shake before using it. You won’t be able to do the 3 finger method with this formula as it is too fluid, but make sure you use a sufficient amount. I pool it into the palm of my hand and then apply from there. Even a generous amount sinks in effortlessly.

My Review of Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible

My Review of Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible
My Review of Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible

I have been getting on really well with this and it’s pretty much a no-brainer. There are lots of mineral sunscreens around right now, but this one is a chemical (organic filter) sunscreen, which means it provides broad-spectrum protection by absorbing UV rays rather than reflecting them, making it lightweight and invisible on the skin.

Texture & Feel

Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible Texture
Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible Texture

One of the standout qualities of this product is its ultra-fluid, watery texture that glides effortlessly across the skin, absorbing almost instantly. It feels practically weightless and is so thin, it’s as though nothing has been applied and it leaves no visible residue. The finish is non-greasy and softly matte, ideal for those against traditional, heavier sunscreens.

Importantly, this is a chemical (organic filter) sunscreen. Instead of creating a physical barrier on the skin (as mineral sunscreens do), it uses advanced chemical UV filters to absorb and neutralise UV rays. This technology is what allows the formula to remain so invisible and elegant on the skin.

Skin Protection: Beyond Just UV

  • Broad-spectrum defense: provides SPF50+ protection covering UVA, UVB, long UVA, visible light, infrared radiation, and environmental pollutants
  • Environmental Active Defense technology: multi-dimensional protective system, including an anti-pollution defense
  • Detox Science: proprietary formula that helps skin manage pollution-related stress and maintain integrity in urban environments.

Hydration & Application

Despite its ultra-light feel, the formula delivers up to 8 hours of hydration and maintains a soft mattifying effect throughout the day, a rare combination in sun protection.

Bioderma Photoderm XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible After Photo

Suitable for All Skin Types

Formulated to be non-comedogenic and suitable for all skin types, this sunscreen is an excellent match even for sensitive or reactive complexions. Dermatologically tested, it also holds up well around the delicate eye area.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
The Bioderma Photoderm X-Defense Ultra-Fluid SPF50 Invisible has an exceptionally fluid, weightless texture that feels almost like water on the skin. It blends in instantly with an invisible, soft matte finish, leaving no white cast or residue. The broad-spectrum protection is comprehensive, guarding against UVA, UVB, visible light, infrared, and pollution. It also delivers up to eight hours of hydration while keeping excess shine at bay, and it works beautifully as a makeup base.

Cons:
The formula does contain fragrance, which may not be ideal for those with very sensitive skin or fragrance allergies. Like all sunscreens, it requires reapplication every two hours, particularly after swimming or sweating, to maintain its full protective benefits.

If you are looking for something invisible like this, but slightly more affordable, check out my Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF 50 Review. It doesn’t work quite so well under makeup but it’s super light and comfortable, and great if you need a product you can be super liberal with, without breaking the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is this a mineral or chemical sunscreen?

The Bioderma Photoderm X-Defense Ultra-Fluid SPF50 Invisible is a chemical (organic filter) sunscreen. It uses modern filters to absorb and neutralise UV rays, which allows for its ultra-light, invisible texture.

Does it leave a white cast?

No. Its invisible finish makes it suitable for all skin tones, with no white film or residue.

Is it greasy or heavy on the skin?

Absolutely not. It offers a dry-touch, non-greasy feel while still hydrating.

Can I wear makeup over it?

Yes. Its silky, mattifying texture makes it an excellent base for foundation and daily makeup.

How long does it hydrate?

Up to 8 hours of hydration, along with mattifying benefits.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. It’s non-comedogenic, lightly fragranced, and well-tolerated around the eyes. Sensitive-skin users may wish to patch-test.

The Bioderma Photoderm X-Defense Ultra-Fluid SPF50+ Invisible offers a rare trifecta: exceptional protection, ultra-light comfort, and a sophisticated, invisible finish suitable for daily wear.

Klira The Dayscript Review - 8 Hours of Sun Protection

Daily SPF is something I take very seriously. It is the cornerstone of my skincare routine, and I never miss it. For that reason, I am always interested in formulas that not only protect but also make it easy to use. Like most people, I find reapplication a challenge and so when I was introduced to Klira The Dayscript which promises 8 hours of sun protection in one application at an event earlier this summer, I was eager to try it. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Klira The Dayscript?

What is Klira The Dayscript?
What is Klira The Dayscript?

This is Klira’s latest innovation: a 7-in-1 targeted daily skincare treatment with SPF50 PA++++. It is described as an all-in-one daytime skincare solution. Rather than layering multiple products, it has been formulated to meet the skin’s daytime biological needs in a single application.

It combines:

  • High-level UV protection with SPF50 PA++++ and encapsulated sunscreen technology for up to 8 hours of protection.
  • Antioxidants including resveratrol bioferment, ubiquinone, Phytexcell Liquorice, and Vitamin E, which defend against oxidative stress, pollution, and visible light damage.
  • Peptides to support collagen and maintain firmness.
  • Hydrating ingredients for comfort throughout the day.
  • Soothing actives to calm and strengthen the skin barrier.

Crucially, this is not a generic formula. It is tailored to your SkinSize profile, identified via an online consultation, ensuring you receive the precise formulation that aligns with your skin’s needs.

The Science Behind It

Daytime is when the skin is most exposed to stressors such as UV rays, pollution, and oxidative damage. It is also when DNA repair enzymes are at their most active, and antioxidant defences are in demand.

The Dayscript is designed to map directly onto this daytime molecular profile, supporting:

  • DNA repair when it is most needed
  • Advanced mitochondrial defence (key to cellular health and longevity)
  • Collagen synthesis and structural support
  • Antioxidant protection exactly when the skin requires it

This intelligent design places it in a category beyond a conventional daily SPF.

Review of Klira The Dayscript

Klira The Dayscript Lab Sample
Klira The Dayscript Lab Sample

I have been testing it over the past few months, and here are my considered thoughts.

My Experience

I trialled The Dayscript from a plain sample tube, which made the experience feel almost like testing a secret prototype.

The texture is lightweight and smooth, blending easily without leaving residue, pilling, or a white cast. It feels hydrating, yet weightless, and crucially, it sits beautifully beneath makeup. In fact, it functions very effectively as a primer, helping foundation to apply evenly and last longer.

Klira The Dayscript Texture

I generally apply two layers, three pumps each, which provides ample coverage. Knowing that the encapsulated sunscreen technology is delivering up to 8 hours of protection gives me enormous peace of mind, especially on days when reapplication isn’t practical. Game changer!!

How It Compares to Klira’s Night Product

Klira’s original launch was a one-step night treatment. While I admire the innovation, I must admit I found it difficult to embrace. I enjoy the ritual of layering different treatments at night, and the Klira night formula did not feel sufficient for my skin’s hydration needs.

The Dayscript, however, is entirely different. It is practical, protective, and perfectly suited to mornings, particularly when time is short. This is the product from Klira that I can genuinely integrate into my lifestyle.

Subscription and Personalisation

The Dayscript can be purchased individually, but Klira recommends the auto-replenish subscription. This ensures you receive a fresh formulation each month (potency is prioritised) and gives you access to Klira’s Dermatology Team for ongoing support. Subscriptions also provide a cost saving, which makes sense for a product designed for daily use.

Results

I have really enjoyed using this over the summer and here are my summarised thoughts on it:

  • Confidence in sun protection – I felt assured wearing this all day without topping up
  • Hydration and comfort – my skin remained balanced and comfortable throughout wear
  • Enhanced makeup performance – I think using less product genuinely improved makeup longevity
  • Simplicity – one step in the morning, no risk of ingredient incompatibility.

Although I still enjoy experimenting with other product combinations, on long days out, particularly in the sun, this is the formula I prioritise.

Klira The Dayscript – FAQs

What is Klira The Dayscript?

A 7-in-1 daily skincare product combining SPF50, antioxidants, peptides, hydration, and primer-like benefits in one step.

How long does it last?

Klira The Dayscript offer up to 8 hours of UVA/UVB protection, thanks to encapsulated sunscreen technology. Reapplication is only required after swimming or heavy perspiration.

Is it suitable as my only morning product?

Yes. It is designed to replace serum, moisturiser, primer, and SPF in a single application.

How is it personalised?

You complete an online consultation that determines your SkinSize. Klira then prescribes the formulation that best meets your profile.

What differentiates it from a standard SPF?

First of all it provides all day UV protection, but beyond that, it actively supports the skin’s daytime biology, delivering antioxidant defence, mitochondrial support, and collagen maintenance.

Final Thoughts

For me, Klira The Dayscript represents a genuine step forward in intelligent, dermatologist-designed skincare. It streamlines the morning routine without compromise, provides reliable long-lasting protection, and enhances the performance of makeup.

It is rare to find a product that feels both practical and sophisticated. The Dayscript achieves this balance, and I can see it becoming indispensable for those who value efficiency, efficacy, and for anyone that wants to reapply sunscreen but find it really hard to do that!

If this isn’t quite what you are looking for but you are after a good SPF that works really well under makeup, check out my La Roche‑Posay Anthelios UVAIR Daily SPF50+ Review.
