The Pai Skincare Facial: Cold Stones and Capable Hands

pai skincare facial detox

I’ve already written about my marvellous Lime Wood Hotel mini-break (see here) but I promised that I’d talk more about their spa (The Herb House) and – more specifically – the gorgeous Pai Skincare facial that I was treated to.

I haven’t had a lot of facials in the past year (not enough time) and the last one I had, earlier in the summer, was a very high-tech-high-performance-results-driven job from the amazing Caroline Hirons. (I need to write a post on that, because so many of you have asked me probing questions about it, but I have a load of my own questions for Caroline before I can get started! I’ll move it to the top of my to-do list.) So it has been a while since I’ve had one of those “float away and go into a little trance” facials – one with lots of relaxing massage, whale-song music, etc etc.

That’s not to say that Pai’s Detox & Decongest treatment isn’t results-driven – my skin felt smooth and clear afterwards – but there was no heavy machinery involved, no intense tingling sensations, no protective goggles required. You get my drift, don’t you? There are a number of different “types” of facials – some of them you can sleep through, some of them you most definitely can’t. Some you can sleep through because they’re just rubbish (someone whispering at you as they apply one cold mask after another and then “leave you to relax” for twenty minutes as the “mask gets to work”) but others you can sleep through because they send you to sleep. A good, capable pair of massagey hands and the right atmosphere – ooh, it’s a treat when you get the perfect combination!

And doze off I did. But, as I said before, I saw clearer, fresher skin at the end and so it wasn’t merely the world’s most expensive snooze. And although I’ve no doubt that the products used by the therapist helped in getting my skin smoother and livelier, I’m almost positive that it was her skilful face-kneading techniques that did the most of the magic. Which is good – anyone can slather a mask on their own face and then take it off again – if you’re paying for a service, then you need it to be something special. Something you can’t do yourself. My therapist used acupressure massage as well as some sort of amazingly relaxing head and scalp-rubbing technique, a cold stone treatment and (I think she said) lymphatic drainage moves, and not only did my face feel less tired and sunken, my entire neck and head and shoulder area was completely relieved of tension.

Bravo. I think that the Himanthalia & Sea Fennel Decongesting Mask was probably the key product in the facial, which is a professional-use mask and not for sale, but having the facial did remind me how much I love Pai’s Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser for a soothing-but-effective cleanse. I use the brand’s Rosehip Oil and Echium Eye Cream on a regular basis (great if you are at all sensitive in the skin department) but it was nice to rekindle our little cleanser relationship. I’ve been thinking about doing a post on soothing cleansing creams and balms and this one will most definitely be in it…

Anyway, a great facial to go for if you find yourself in that neck of the (Lime) woods –  and I’m sure that Pai will be in more locations soon. I hope so. The products really are so gentle and – combined with the skilled massaging – it’s the perfect treat for sensitive, congested, tense and all-round stressed-out skin.

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Er, Still Moving…

luxe shine spray

I’ve been ridiculously busy with work this week (also why the house-move is taking so long), shooting videos and editing videos and working on the launch of the new Colab product. It’s an exciting one: a luxe hair fragrance spray (notes of bergamot and oud, very sexy) with a lovely light shine that’s great for fine hair. I’ll talk about it more next week, but keep a lookout for it at Superdrug and FeelUnique from Monday!

Did you know that I have an entirely separate blog over on The Uphill? Mum stuff, baby stuff, observations on life (often random) and lots of chat about breastmilk and large guts. It’s a hoot, if you’d care to join me – the comments sections are, I feel, a brilliant way to pass an hour or so. Some readers have the most fantastic motherhood anecdotes. I also write about fertility and I recorded my pregnancy from about twenty weeks in, so plenty to catch up on if you’re interested!

The Uphill

No pet pics this week – Mr Bear will be home in the next few days, I hope, and I imagine that all hell will break loose! I wonder how the new carpet / recently re-upholstered chairs / tactile wallpaper will fare against his sharp claws? I may have to get my Mum to knit him some mittens.

Nails: An Affordable Dupe for my Favourite Polish!

chanel holiday nail polish dupe

I can tell you, with absolute hand-on-the-heart conviction, that The Body Shop’s Colour Crush nail polish in Just Peachy is a hundred-percent dupe for one of my favourite shades, Chanel’s Holiday. I have tested it in all lights and it is exact in every way – I’ve even made Mr AMR examine my nails painted with the two shades and he couldn’t tell the difference. (He has a very good eye for these things.) (Images and colours, not nails!) At a push, he said that Holiday was ever so slightly darker and duller, with less of a sheen, but I couldn’t tell them apart at all until I noticed the sheen. You can see the comparison below – Holiday is on the left and Just Peachy (most inaccurate shade name of all time) is on the right. I would point out that Just Peachy is glossier and so looks more “jelly bean” than Holiday, in this photograph it looks a bit lighter than it really is. (Snoozing readers that I’ve bored to death: WAKE UP! This is important cash-saving science we’re talking about here!)

I’m not into this whole “dupe” business as a whole; cheap foundation dupes, for example, hardly ever seem to live up to the hype and I’ve had some questionable suggestions in the past where the high-street products have been completely disappointing and nothing like the “duped” original. I should say, though, that I’ve also seen things go the other way, with the budget option beating the more expensive, but not so often; this Body Shop polish is a rare gem.

I wanted to do a separate post on the new Colour Crush polishes from The Body Shop; they are simply superb. Gorgeous, easy to apply formulas, long wear, no chipping and completely vegan. The colours are well thought-out and flattering, the brush is neither too thick nor too thin and the price? A fiver. Pretty good if you ask me. I’ve been using Almond Kiss (above far left), a perfect nude, for the last week or so and haven’t been tempted to change it up.

Take a look at some on-trend manicure ideas…

The Body Shop have done well with this addition to their cosmetics range; I get the feeling that polishes won’t be the first thing that a shopper would look at in-store, but I’ll bet that they do magnificently well online. This shade, Just Peachy, which is nothing like peach, more of a fiery orange-red, will save Chanel fans a whopping great load of cash. There’s nothing like that iconic Chanel nail polish packaging to make you feel as though you’ve treated yourself, but I go through Holiday at a ridiculous rate so sorry, Chanel, I’m betraying you just this once!

Colour Crush polishes are £5 each from The Body Shop – buy online here. There’s an offer on at the moment; if you spend £50 then you get £25 off. Seems too good to be true but I just tested it out and it worked, so perhaps it’s Christmas Stocking Fillers time! Code is 14673.

Sunday Tittle Tattle: My First Mother’s Day

mothers day post

Today is my first ever mother’s day. I really hope that the baby has organised something special, what with all of the free time she has! Ha. Joking aside, I can’t actually believe that it’s mother’s day and I’m a mum. I used to sit and daydream about what it would feel like and whether it would ever happen to me (it took ages and ages, you can read a bit about it here) and now here I am with the most incredible little human by my side. Each day I think that it wouldn’t be possible to love her any more than I do and then the next day I feel overwhelmed all over again. I’m surprised that my heart hasn’t burst!

It makes me look at mums with a fresh perspective; especially my own mum. I mean, if this is how I feel now, eight months in, what must it be like thirty-odd years down the line? I worry about the baby ever leaving my side – I wake up in a cold sweat sometimes when I’ve been having a particularly vivid little what-if session before bed – so how can mums possibly cope when their kids go to school, or set off hiking in Peru for a year or (ahem) decide to become a model and fly around the world on their own and not really tell anyone their whereabouts? It must be absolutely hellish.

mothers day post

So happy mother’s day; I feel incredibly lucky and extremely privileged to both be a mum and have a mum of my own and I try to remember to be grateful for every moment. If I can be even a fraction as good at mumming as my own mum is then I’ll be pretty content. (I think that “mumming” might actually be some sort of rudimentary pantomime acting, but – if it is – I’d like to be good at that too. You never know when you might be called upon to perform a mime. It pays to be prepared.)

Anyway, soppy stuff over: I have to go and look at Malm chests on the IKEA website. My storage situation has gone beyond ridiculous – I’m keeping my knickers in the baby’s room and my vests are hanging in the bathroom cupboard!

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne 2019

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne 2019

As someone who more than enjoys the slightly chillier days of Autumn, it will come of little surprise that I am already planning both my wardrobe and beauty routine for the coming months, and I more than have a contender for my fragrance of the season in Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne.

For those who are eagle-eyed amongst us, you may actually recall Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne from the English Fields collection of 2018? Well for anyone who fell hard the first time around for its light and delectable notes, the good news is that it is back to stay as a permanent fixture of the Jo Malone line up.

If like myself you aren’t a huge fan of spice lead scents and want something soft, comforting and dare I say cosy like a giant knitted blanket, then Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne could be the very scent you have been searching for. It is light, floral and yet thanks to the slightly oaty trail of Barley it feels fitting for the season of crunchy leaves and layered clothing. Speaking of layers, Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne does partner well with just about every existing Jo Malone cologne you can imagine; in the spirit of counting down to Halloween, I have of course been adding a spritz or too alongside Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne 2019

The issue with writing about fragrance is that a screen can never truly portray exactly how it smells or settles on the skin, regardless of how many punchy adjectives I may fit in a paragraph. However in the instance of Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne is that it is entirely agreeable and I do believe that you would be hard pushed to not like it. It is safe yet special at the same time and that is a space rarely occupied by any fragrance.

“When I smell Poppy & Barley I am taken to the heart of an English meadow during the harvest.

It’s the end of every summer when the fields are a sea of gold and I picture lively light poppies moving and dancing in the breeze.” – CELINE ROUX, HEAD OF GLOBAL FRAGRANCE

If you can imagine the crispness of the air when the leaves are slowly browning and your sudden need for a scarf, yet the sun is still in the sky and it doesn’t quite feel like Winter will be rearing its head anytime soon and you have Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne. It is sweet thanks to a ripe and altogether juicy note of Blackcurrant, delicately floral and slightly powdery with a fresh, heart note of Poppy (enhanced by rose and violet) and yet it has an almost savoury twinge, due to the addition of the cereal-like note of Barley.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne will be launching soon – link.
