Treat Day, M&S and Sali Hughes in my Bathroom…

ruth crilly a model recommends

I “vlogged”. I really can’t stand writing – or saying -that word. I think I said on Twitter that “vlogging” sounds like a Klingon coughing up a lung. Anyway, until someone comes up with something better we’re stuck with it. Vlog. Rhymes with bog, frog and hog.  Nice.

In this random edition of video diary, Dexter the dog goes to the groomers, I go to M&S to look at the new Rosie makeup and end up buying pans, towels and baby clothes and I have a little treat day in town. And most importantly, I entertain Sali Hughes in my bathroom. By entertain, I don’t mean that I served canapés and champagne, we just had a bit of a laugh and a chat about beauty – the resulting videos will be up on her Youtube channel soon.

Watch previous vlogs…

It was quite a full week, really, and I must have exhausted myself because on Monday I fell ill. I’m in bed typing this – apologies to those who were waiting for the winners of the Alpha-H giveaway, I shall post them up either later on today or first thing tomorrow. For now, here’s the vid – apparently the musical interludes are rather loud, so don’t have a heart attack when the first one kicks in. I’ll try and do better with the next vlog edit…

7 Beauty Products You've Got to Try This Week

Over the last few days I have been somewhat attempting to Spring Clean my beauty stash – it is amazing how many half used tubes of mascara and dried up nail polish one person can amass – in order to fully utilise and appreciate the products that I do love and reach for. I’ve also decided that for every new product I purchase, one neglected product must be donated or disregarded depending on its condition – out with the old and in with the new. Let me share a few note worthy additions to both my bathroom and make-up bag…

7 Beauty Products You've Got to Try This Week

New Jo Malone Cologne Intense 60ml

The Jo Malone Cologne Intense range may not be a recent arrival to the fragrance market (other than the latest arrival Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka) but the new, dinky, travel-ready 50ml size of all seven scents are and as such, are something I imagine you’ll be seeing a lot of in the coming months. As much as I adore a good few of the Jo Malone Cologne Intense fragrances, there is no denying that they are super lux and as such come at a premium price. The other issue with the original 100ml size of the Cologne Intense range, is that they are far from travel friendly and may not be the best choice – purely based on volume – for the picky fragrance consumer. The new 50ml size is not only utterly adorable but by far more suited to being lugged around – travel or otherwise – and of course the reduced sized is ever so slightly more affordable too. I was very kindly gifted a bottle of the Jo Malone Cologne Intense in Velvet Rose & Oud and despite not being a huge fan of either key note, it has left a lasting, powerful impression – I can imagine that this would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift.

Jo Malone Tuberose Angelica Body Cream

Admittedly I am not the best at applying moisturiser to my body and more often than not I need more than gentle persuasion, to as much as look at a body cream, oil or lotion but when products smell and feel as great as Jo Malone Tuberose Angelica Body Cream do, half the battle is all but won. As you would expect – or demand – from any body moisturiser worth its salt, Jo Malone Tuberose Angelica Body Cream is thick, creamy (a little goes a long way), indulgent and most importantly hydrating without any greasy or heavy residue. The bonus element is that much like all Jo Malone bath and body products this is wonderfully perfumed, so much so, that sometimes I use this in place of a mist on fragrance and enjoy the gentler and somewhat milkier (due to the cream based medium) take on a Jo Malone classic.

Instant Skin Lift: Creme Puff in Seductive Pink

Max Factor Creme Puff Blush in Seductive Pink

There have been lots of comments about my blusher in the Empties video that I posted last week: it’s the Creme Puff Blush in Seductive Pink from Max Factor. Rather more pinkish than I would ever usually go, but I was filming one of my Beauty Recommended videos and this was one of the shades to experiment with.

I think that it gives a real lift to the skin, don’t you think? Good for tired days when bronzer just looks a bit flat and drab. Excuse the moody face in my photo – as usual, I forgot to take a proper picture and this is a still that I grabbed from the video. You’d think someone had kidnapped my hamster…

I swept Seductive Pink on to the apples of my cheeks using the Zoeva Luxe Face Definer Brush – just the tip of it, and very lightly, because it’s not really a blush brush, I just couldn’t find my Bobbi Brown one.

I find the Creme Puff blushers so easy to use – very natural and glowing. Each blush has a few slightly different shades swirled in, so you don’t just get one flat colour, it’s a wash of beautiful tones. I’ve reviewed the Creme Puff blushers before here, but as a quick reference, if you love the Hourglass powders then you’ll get on very well with Creme Puff. And they’re a fraction of the price.

You can find Creme Puff Blushers at Boots here – they’re £8.99 each. If you catch them on a 3-for-2 then my all-time favourite is Nude Mauve and I have a new crush on Alluring Rose, too.

Parma Violets, Pet Problems and a Dior Wedding.

miss dior wedding

1) I got a wedding invite couriered to me last week and nearly died of excitement when I opened it. How lovely! A Dior wedding! Then I realised that everyone was invited and that also I wouldn’t get to wear a hat. Good news for “everyone”, bad news for the hat, which will have to stay boxed and unworn until the next false alarm. (To be fair, hats aren’t a good look on me at the moment. I just look like a rotund bee-keeper.) The Dior wedding, if you’re intrigued, is on the 4th February and the teaser is online here. I have no clue what it’s all about, but the video is very stylish and makes me yearn for summer…

violet body cream

2) Goodness me, this is a beautiful scent. Parma Violets. Like Marmite, you’ll either love it or hate it, but if you do love Parma Violets then you must get your paws on some of this Rose & Co Patisserie de Bain body cream, even if you just intend to keep it in a drawer and sniff it at regular intervals, which is what I do. You can find it online here.

Well done, you’ll be contacted directly for your postal addresses, enjoy your new glowing skin!

4) Naughty pets, part 2: Mr Bear knocked my lovely Rose Otto Face Oil from the bathroom shelf and it smashed all over the floor. I have no idea why he loves pawing things from shelves so much, I may have to start supergluing things down. Here he is looking completely nonplussed, above, and below we have Dexter looking a bit scrawny and scruffy, needing his fur to hurry up and grow.

Family Get-Togethers + Luxury Houses = Perfect Stays.

perfect stays holt farm review

Last Autumn I started thinking about holding a family get-together: me, parents, all siblings and babies and other-halves and various add-ons such as dogs and fluffy dinosaurs and pull-along ponies. It would be fun, I mused, to get everyone in the same place at the same time and it would also be momentous, in a way, because we had not all been in the same place at the same time for years. In fact, taking sibling husbands and girlfriends into account, we had never all been in the same place at the same time.

Mass gatherings don’t happen in our family very frequently because a) we all live spread out over England and trying to get a time when everyone is free, and able to travel, and willing to travel, is nigh on impossible and b) (and this is probably more the reason) there simply isn’t enough room at any of our houses to comfortably accommodate everyone together without there being queues for the loo or mayhem around the dinner table or gridlock on the driveway. Of course the parental home is always the hub, but what parents expand the size of their property as the children grow up? Most start downsizing, or at least stay put, and the home that once held two adults and a few kids suddenly feels very tight when those kids are tall and come with a family of their own who all need room.

And so (stay with me, readers, you’re in for the long-haul here!) I started a discussion with my Mum about planning a family get-together “away”. Something I’ve inherited from Mother: I take an almost indecent amount of pleasure in organising things “away”. Weekend city-breaks, fortnights in the sun, days out to visit family and friends; both of us seem to enjoy sitting for hours at the computer trawling deals and hotel options, working out flight itineraries and nit-picking our way through Tripadvisor and Booking.com to weed out the trustworthy reviews. So we tackled the family get-together idea with gusto, immediately listing ideas and accommodation options.

perfect stays house rental

We wanted something quite special, with a touch of luxury, as we felt that this was a big occasion (my birthday, my niece baby Edith’s first birthday and something else rather exciting) and so the first consideration was whether or not we booked a hotel. But for the number of rooms we’d need, a hotel was prohibitively expensive and we didn’t like the idea that we wouldn’t be able to cook and we’d have to constantly find activities to keep the group occupied, otherwise everyone would just end up spending time in their own little rooms and the whole get-together weekend would be little more than having an evening in a restaurant and then seeing everyone for breakfast again the next morning!

And so the solution for this special weekend was to rent a house. I’m no stranger to the whole holiday-let renting game; I’ve been on quite a few weekends with twelve or so friends and all the relevant children, I’ve been abroad and stayed at lovely villas with Mr AMR and I’ve shared little holiday cottages in England with my parents. In every way, a large rented house was the ideal solution here: plenty of space to all be together, the ability to cook all of our own meals whenever we wanted to and enough separate, private rooms to allow for quiet time. In short, replicating the typical family home set-up, just with enough room to house everyone comfortably. But with a bit of something extra-special and lovely, something that we would all remember for a long time afterwards…
