Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – Tried & Tested

*Links marked with asterisks are affiliate links, these help Ree with running costs of the blog

If there’s one step that can quietly help how makeup sits on mature skin, it’s how you prep the skin, and primer can be a big part of that. The right formula doesn’t just prep, it hydrates, smooths texture, softens the look of fine lines and helps foundation wear more evenly and naturally throughout the day.

For mature skin, the modern approach to priming is less about heavy silicone fillers and more about skincare-led hybrids, glow enhancers and skin-perfecting textures that work with the skin rather than sitting on top of it.

Below is a curated edit of the best primers (and primer-style hybrids) I’ve reviewed that genuinely deliver on hydration, smoothing and radiance in 2026.

Merit Great Skin Priming Moisturizer

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - MERIT
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – MERIT

This is a lightweight hybrid that sits somewhere between moisturiser and primer. It delivers instant hydration while subtly smoothing the skin so makeup applies more evenly.

The Merit Great Skin Priming Moisturizer doesn’t feel like a traditional primer at all. There’s no heavy silicone texture, just a comfortable, breathable base that helps foundation look more skin-like and less “sitting on top”.

Best for: dry or dehydrated mature skin, natural makeup days, lightweight base routines.

MAC Hyper Real Serumizer

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - MAC
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – MAC

This is very much skincare-led priming. It focuses on hydration and skin comfort first, creating a plump, smooth base that helps foundation glide on without clinging to dryness or texture.

I think that MAC Hyper Real Serumizer is especially effective for mature skin that needs extra hydration before makeup, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration.

Best for: dry skin, plumping effect, improving foundation application.

Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow Primer

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - Shiseido
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – Shiseido

This gives a refined, healthy glow while smoothing the look of skin texture. It sits beautifully under foundation, helping create a more even, luminous finish without exaggerating lines

Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow Primer is one of those primers that improves how everything on top of it performs, rather than just acting as a base layer.

Best for: dull skin, uneven tone, natural radiance under makeup.

Clinique Even Better Light Reflecting Primer

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - Clinique
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – Clinique

This is a dependable, skin-friendly primer that delivers a soft-focus finish without heaviness. It helps blur pores and fine lines while adding subtle radiance.

Clinique Even Better Light Reflecting Primer works particularly well for everyday makeup where you want skin to look smoother but still like skin.

Best for: soft-focus smoothing, daily wear.

Charlotte Tilbury Invisible UV Flawless Poreless Primer

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - Charlotte Tilbury
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – Charlotte Tilbury

This combines priming with sun protection and a smoothing effect that helps blur texture and refine the look of pores.

Charlotte Tilbury Invisible UV Flawless Poreless Primer gives a more perfected, “ready-for-makeup” finish and works especially well when you want longer-lasting base makeup with added SPF protection.

Best for: pore blurring, SPF in base, polished makeup looks.

DCYPHER Custom Glow Booster

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - DCYPHER
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – DCYPHER

This sits in the same space as glow primers and complexion boosters, delivering a soft, lit-from-within finish that can be worn alone, under foundation or mixed in.

Unlike more reflective glow products, DCYPHER Custom Glow Booster gives a more refined, skin-like luminosity with less shimmer, making it especially flattering on mature skin where texture and excess shine can be a concern.

It’s also custom-blended, which allows for a more seamless match to your skin tone than traditional one-shade glow bases.

Best for: natural radiance, customised glow, Flawless Filter-style effect with less shimmer.

Klira The Day Script (Skincare Step)

Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 - Klira
Best Primers for Mature Skin 2026 – Klira

Although not a primer in the traditional sense, Klira The Day Script plays a major role in how makeup sits on the skin. By improving overall skin texture and balance, it helps create a smoother canvas before makeup is even applied.

For many mature skin routines, this type of skincare-first approach means less reliance on heavy priming products. It also has encapsulated slow release SPF50 technology which means you are protected from UV rays throughout the day. Pretty clever!

Best for: improving skin over time, minimalist routines, makeup prep through skincare.

Final Thoughts

The best primers for mature skin in 2026 all share the same direction: hydration, skin compatibility and soft-focus enhancement rather than heavy coverage or texture masking.

If your skin is dry or makeup tends to settle, reach for Merit or MAC for hydration. For glow without shimmer, Shiseido and DCYPHER are standout choices. Clinique is a reliable everyday option, while Charlotte Tilbury offers more of a perfected, pore-blurred finish with SPF built in.

And increasingly, skincare-led steps like Klira are blurring the line between prep and treatment, meaning less product, but better skin underneath.

FAQs About Primers for Mature Skin

What is the best primer for mature skin?

The best primer for mature skin depends on your skin type and finish preference. Hydrating primers like Merit Great Skin Priming Moisturizer and MAC Hyper Real Serumizer work well for dry skin, while glow-enhancing formulas like Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow Primer and DCYPHER Custom Glow Booster add radiance without emphasising texture.

What type of primer is best for wrinkles?

Hydrating and smoothing primers are generally best for wrinkles. Heavy mattifying formulas can sometimes emphasise texture, whereas serum-style or glow primers tend to soften the appearance of lines more naturally.

How do you stop foundation settling into fine lines?

Good skin prep is key. Use hydrating skincare and a lightweight smoothing primer, then apply foundation in thin layers. Avoid overly powdery products and focus on formulas that maintain hydration throughout the day.

Is a glow primer better than a mattifying primer for mature skin?

In many cases, yes. Glow primers are often more flattering on mature skin because they add hydration and luminosity, whereas heavy mattifying formulas can sometimes make skin look flat or emphasise dryness and texture. The key is choosing glow products with refined radiance rather than obvious shimmer.

Can you wear primer without foundation?

Absolutely. Many modern primers and glow boosters can be worn alone to give skin a smoother, fresher and more radiant appearance without the need for foundation. Products like serum-primers and glow enhancers work especially well for minimal makeup days.

What is the best way to apply primer on mature skin?

Apply primer in thin layers after skincare and SPF. Focus on areas where makeup tends to crease, cling or lose radiance, such as around the nose, cheeks and forehead. Using less product often gives the most natural finish on mature skin.

Elevate Hair Salon Brixton

Hey hey everyone!

Gosh my last post was really Aug 2025?! Sigh! I took an extended break from blogging but I’m back and hope to bring regular updates like before!

This year I want to try out new salons. Whilst I love Maison style (my usual go to salon) I don’t like the wait, it’s a small salon so it comes with the territory, but it just takes forever and the nearby parking is not cheap. Plus, it’s really in my nature to try new things so this year I’m bringing back my salon series and I have 3 salons in mind I want to visit.

At each new salon I will be going for my usual hair services: wash, treatment, blow-dry and trim when needed. I will then review the salon and customer services.

My first salon of the year was Elevate based in Brixton. Ive been considering this place for a long time! Back in 2024 when I was thinking about texture releases, it was between Elevate and Maison style and the only reason I went with the latter was because the head stylist there had done it herself and had so many informational videos on it.

Elevate have 2 locations in Brixton which is about 5 mins walk apart. I didn’t drive this time but its right in the heart of Brixton, I saw some side roads for parking but there’s also a few car parks near by. I got there on time for my app and I was shown to a chair right away! The first stylist came over for a mini consultation and Latisha the stylist I had booked also came over for the consultation. I was given some advice and some new product recommendations. I loved she didn’t just say to stop everything and switch but to finish them and try the new products(I’ve had that before)! She also asked for the products she recommended to be used for my shampoo and treatment and I LOVE that! I got to test the products right there and then- this is something I’ve never had before.

After a thorough wash, I sat under the dryer for 20 mins, was rinsed then back to the chair for my blow-dry. There was a short wait between the rinse and the start of the blow-dry but it was very short probably about 15 mins or so. ( I have waited longer). Blow-dry was gentle, no excessive heat or pulling. My hair was trimmed- I didn’t need much taken off then I was done

The whole service took about 2 hours and I was happy with the fact that there wasn’t a lot of waiting time in between services.

My only issue is that I was told because it was my first visit to the salon, it is classed as a cut rather than a trim I believe that added about an extra £10 to my total- not sure why because it was a trim ???

Overall verdict

Will I visit again? Yes, my stylists were welcoming and knowledgeable and I didn’t have to wait around too much.  I went on a Friday afternoon, the salon was busy, but I found the service to be efficient. I love that I got to test out the recommended products , she used the Loreal Absolute Molecular Repair (black packaging) which I have just purchased. I loved how soft and good my hair felt, even the stylist caught me playing with my hair LOOL.

It seemed to be a good vibe in there. Music and jokes between the stylists made it a nice atmosphere. Drinks and snacks were offered which were a nice touch. I would recommend Elevate and I will go back

This post is very late lmao. I went to Elevate in January , wrote the review but never got round to posting.

Ive already been to the 2nd place on my list twice and I will post the review shortly

Catch you later!

Take care

I have to admit, I didn’t expect Murad to launch a cleansing balm, but I’m really happy they did because this is a genuinely lovely product to use.

First of all, the packaging is very clever. Instead of dipping your fingers into a tub, you sort of shave off a small layer of balm. It actually reminds me a bit of sharpening a pencil, and you can get just the right amount each time. You really don’t need much either, just a small “triangle” worth is plenty. There’s no need to overload it.

Murad Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm texture
Murad Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm texture

I also found that I prefer melting it directly onto my face rather than warming it up in my hands first. It just feels neater and more controlled. The texture starts off slightly firm and a tiny bit lumpy, but it quickly transforms into a beautifully smooth oil that feels really elegant on the skin.

It’s a lovely product to massage in. I like to take my time with it, and it does an excellent job of breaking down makeup and SPF. It removes pretty much everything with ease, including long-wear formulas.

The scent is quite coconutty, but in a natural way, not artificial or overly perfumed. It just smells clean and comforting.

Once you add water, it emulsifies really nicely into a soft milk. I usually remove it with a warm cloth, and my skin is left feeling incredibly soft, smooth, and hydrated. Importantly, it never feels stripped or tight, which is exactly what I want from a cleansing balm.

It’s also very gentle around the eyes. It doesn’t sting and doesn’t leave that annoying cloudy film, which is a big win. I also really like how efficient it feels to use. Not having to dip fingers into a jar makes it feel more hygienic and just a bit more streamlined overall.

Murad says there’s no need to double cleanse with this, and while I would generally still use it as a first cleanse, I have used it on its own and it does remove everything well.

In terms of skincare benefits, I love that it includes ceramides for barrier support and fermented camellia oil, which helps it rinse away cleanly while still feeling nourishing. It’s a great option if your skin is feeling dry or compromised and you want something that cleanses without disrupting your barrier.

Overall, the Murad Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm is just a really lovely, well-thought-out product. If you enjoy cleansing balms, this is definitely one to try.

Texture & Formula

  • Solid balm that softens on contact
  • Melts into a silky oil
  • Emulsifies into a milky cleanser
  • Rinses clean without residue

Who is it Best For?

  • Dry or dehydrated skin
  • Anyone looking to support their skin barrier
  • Fans of cleansing balms
  • Those who wear long-wear makeup or SPF
  • Anyone who prefers a more hygienic balm format

Do You Need to Double Cleanse with the Murad Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm?

Technically, you don’t have to. This does a thorough job on its own. However, if you enjoy a double cleansing routine, it works perfectly as a first cleanse before going in with a second cleanser.

Final Thoughts

This is a really strong addition to the cleansing balm category. It combines effective makeup removal with genuine skincare benefits, and the packaging makes it feel fresh and a bit more elevated than your standard balm.

If your priority is clean, soft, hydrated skin without any stripping, this absolutely delivers.

Cleansing Balm vs Cleansing Oil. What’s the Difference?

This is something I get asked about a lot, and honestly, cleansing balms and cleansing oils essentially do the same job. Both are designed to break down makeup, SPF, excess oil and impurities without stripping the skin.

The main difference is really the texture and experience of using them. A cleansing balm starts as a solid texture that melts down into an oil as you massage it into the skin. That transformation process is part of the appeal. You get a bit more playtime and more of that facial massage element, which can make your cleansing routine feel more luxurious and spa-like.

A cleansing oil skips that first stage because it’s already in liquid form. It’s usually a little quicker and more straightforward to use, especially if you want something fast and efficient at the end of the day.

In terms of performance, neither is necessarily better than the other. It really comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer cleansing balms because they feel richer and more nourishing, especially if they have dry skin. Others love cleansing oils because they feel lightweight, quick and easy to rinse away.

Generally speaking:

  • Cleansing balms can feel a little more comforting and cocooning on dry skin
  • Cleansing oils are often preferred by those who like a lighter texture
  • Balms tend to offer a more sensorial experience
  • Oils can feel slightly quicker and less messy to use
  • Both work brilliantly for removing makeup and SPF

The important thing is finding a formula that removes everything effectively without leaving your skin feeling tight or stripped afterwards.

Murad’s Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm definitely leans into the more luxurious, treatment-style cleansing experience while still rinsing away really cleanly.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted Review

If you already love the original UVAIR SPF (and honestly, I really do), then this launch is a very exciting one. The new La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted version keeps everything that made the original such a standout, but adds that extra bit of complexion-enhancing coverage.

This is one of those products that sits right in that sweet spot between skincare and makeup, and I think it’s going to be very popular.

What is La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted?

What is La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted?
What is La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted?

This is a lightweight daily sunscreen with SPF50+ protection, now available in three tinted shades designed to give a sheer, skin-perfecting finish.

It’s essentially a tinted version of the original UVAIR serum sunscreen, but with a slightly more creamy texture and a soft-focus tint.

Tinted vs Original: What’s the Difference?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Original UVAIR SPF

  • More fluid / serum-like
  • Completely invisible
  • Best for layering under makeup

Tinted UVAIR SPF

  • Slightly creamier
  • Sheer coverage
  • Satin skin-perfecting finish
  • Can replace light makeup

They are very similar formulas and so it really just comes down to whether you want coverage.

Shades Available

There are three shades:

  • Light (the one I have)
  • Medium
  • Deep

I have been using Light, and it works really beautifully with my skin tone. What I really like is that it doesn’t pull overly warm or orangey, which can often be the case with tinted SPFs. It’s quite neutral and just melts into the skin.

Texture & Application

The texture is slightly different to the original.

  • The original UVAIR is more fluid and serum-like
  • The tinted version feels a touch creamier and a bit more structured

It still feels very lightweight, but it holds its shape a little more when you dispense it, which actually makes it really easy to apply.

Speaking of application, the new packaging is great. It has that slightly chubby, rounded design with a nozzle that makes dispensing neat and controlled.

Finish & Coverage

This really surprised me. A lot of tinted SPFs lean quite dewy, but this one is much more of a natural satin finish. It’s not flat, but it’s definitely not shiny either andit almost sets itself on the skin.

The coverage is sheer but skin-perfecting. It just evens everything out in a really effortless way.

  • Blends incredibly easily
  • Doesn’t cling or gather
  • No pilling over skincare
  • Feels seamless on the skin

It’s one of those products that makes your skin look like your skin, but better.

Can You Use This Instead of Foundation?

Yes, and this is where I think it really shines. Because it isn’t overly dewy, you can actually apply a proper amount (which is key for SPF protection) without it feeling heavy.

You could:

  • Wear it on its own
  • Add concealer for extra coverage
  • Or layer a small amount of foundation on top

I actually think it works brilliantly as a base, you just need less of everything else.

SPF Application (Important)

One of the biggest issues with SPF in makeup is that people don’t apply enough.

Because this has:

  • A lightweight feel
  • A non-greasy finish
  • No excessive glow

…it’s much easier to apply the correct amount without it feeling too much.

That’s a big win.

When to Choose Tinted vs Untinted

Go for the tinted version if:

  • You want a quick, one-step morning routine
  • You like light coverage
  • You prefer a more perfected finish without makeup

Stick with the original if:

  • You want something completely invisible
  • You wear fuller coverage foundation
  • You prefer a more traditional SPF step

Final Thoughts

This is a really elegant formula. It’s easy to use, flattering on the skin, and actually practical in terms of getting your SPF dose in, which is not always the case with tinted products.

If you already love the original UVAIR (review here), I think this is a very easy addition to your routine. And if you’ve been looking for a tinted SPF that doesn’t feel heavy, greasy, or overly glowy, this is definitely one to check out.

FAQs La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted Review

Is La Roche-Posay UVAIR Tinted good for oily skin?

I think this is a great one for oily skin as it has a very balanced finish that isn’t too dry or too oily.

Does it provide enough coverage to replace foundation?

Does the tinted SPF go orange?

In the Light shade, I find you get a great neutral result and it doesn’t go too warm or orangey.

Can you reapply it over makeup?

I think you can definitely gently top up with this during the day. You might want to add a bit more bronze or blush over the top, but I think this will work for application. If you want something lighter, you might prefer a mist. I am currently loving the Nip+Fab Peptide Fix SPF Spray*.

Is La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAIR Serum Sunscreen SPF50+ Tinted fragrance-free?

No, the product does contain some fragrance.

Best Foundations 2026: The Ultimate Guide to Every Skin Type and Concern

*Links marked with asterisks are affiliate links, these help Ree with running costs of the blog

Finding the best foundation can feel like a never-ending quest. There are so many formulas, finishes and big claims, and what works beautifully for one person can be completely wrong for another. In this guide to the best foundations for 2026, I’ve tested formulas across oily, dry, sensitive and mature skin to find the ones that genuinely perform.

Over the years, I’ve tested hundreds of foundations, from affordable high street buys to seriously luxurious formulas, and I’ve learnt that the “best” foundation always comes down to your skin type, what you want your skin to look like, and the finish you love.

So I’ve pulled together this edit of the best foundations for 2026, broken down by skin type and concern, to help you find your perfect match.

How I Chose the Best Foundations for 2026

When I’m testing foundations, I don’t just look at how they apply in the first five minutes. I wear them properly, for full days, in different conditions, and I pay attention to how they behave over time.

I look at:

  • Finish and wear time – does it last, separate, oxidise?
  • Skin compatibility – does it sit nicely on dry patches, control oil, or cause congestion?
  • Ease of use – does it blend well, layer nicely, and work with different primers and skincare?
  • Shade range – because a great formula needs inclusive shades
  • Price vs performance – is it actually worth it?

I also prioritise formulas that feel comfortable on the skin and look like skin, because that’s always the goal.

Best Foundations 2026 - With SPF
Best Foundations 2026 – With SPF

If you like your makeup to work a bit harder for you, a foundation with SPF is a great option. I still always recommend a separate SPF underneath, but these are brilliant for added daily protection and convenience.

These work particularly well when paired with a hydrating base and lightweight skincare underneath so they don’t feel too heavy.

For a deeper dive, check out my full roundup of foundations with SPF.

Do you still need SPF under foundation?

I always say yes to this question because, a full SPF dose in any product comes entirely down to using enough of the product that contains the sunscreen. Most people don’t use enough foundation to provide the level of protection that the bottle has on it, so I always recommend using a separate dedicated SPF product underneath,

Best Custom Foundation Match 2026 (AI-Powered)

Best Foundations 2026 - Custom Matching
Best Foundations 2026 – Custom Matching

If you’ve ever struggled to find your exact shade or the right formula, this is where things get really interesting.

DCYPHER foundations are completely bespoke. Instead of choosing from a set shade range, AI technology analyses your skin tone and undertone to create a match specifically for you. You can also tailor coverage and finish, so it works for your skin type and how you like your base to look.

It’s a great option if you’ve never quite found your perfect shade, sit between undertones, or want more control over your foundation.

Because it’s fully customisable, it can work across oily, dry, combination or mature skin depending on how you build it.

My take: if you’ve ever looked at a wall of foundations and thought “none of these are quite right”, this makes a lot of sense.

What is a custom foundation?

A custom foundation is made specifically for you. Your exact shade, undertone and finish are created to match your skin, rather than choosing from pre-made options.

How does AI foundation matching work?

AI analyses photos of your skin to map your tone and undertone, then creates a precise match for you.

With DCYPHER, you can do this online, and soon you’ll also be able to get matched in person, which will make it even more accurate.

These tend to be gentler, with skincare-focused formulas and minimal irritation risk. If you’ve struggled to find something that doesn’t irritate, a custom option like DCYPHER can also be worth exploring because you can tailor the finish and feel more precisely.

How to Choose the Right Foundation for Your Skin Type and Tone

So finding your perfect foundation will be a lot easier if you fully understand your skin type.

How do I know my skin type?

  • Oily skin: excess shine, makeup breaking down
  • Dry skin: tightness, flaking, foundation clinging
  • Combination skin: oily T-zone, balanced elsewhere
  • Sensitive skin: redness, irritation, reactivity

How do I find my perfect foundation shade?

Shade matching is just as important, and it’s where so many people struggle. Always try to check your match in natural light and along your jawline.

And if you’ve never quite nailed your shade, this is exactly where a custom approach like DCYPHER really comes into its own.

For a deeper dive, read my full guide: How to Choose the Right Foundation for Your Skin Type. There’s lots more recommendations in this post too!

My Favourite Foundations Right Now (What I Actually Use)

Best Foundations 2026 - My Favourites
Best Foundations 2026 – My Favourites

My skin is combination, although it has become drier and more dehydrated as I have aged (I am currently 51). I always prefer a radiant, skin-like finish over anything too matte.

The foundations I consistently come back to are:

  • DCYPHER Custom Glow Booster – perfect for everyday glow, I just add a touch of concealer for a bit of extra coverage where I need it.
  • Shiseido Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting Foundation – great buildable coverage, looks like skin, feels lightweight, lasts all day.
  • Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow Foundation – gives the most stunning glow, feels like skincare, great staying power.
  • Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops – easy to use, gorgeous glow, great skincare element, expensive but worth it.

Write about your personal favourites and why, talking about your own skin type and perhaps touch on previous products that didnt work for you etc.
