Top Ten Gifts for Ten Pounds or Less!

ruth crilly beauty blogger

I felt moved to make an extra gift guide after seeing some of the complete tat that’s out there for under ten pounds – it’s actually quite difficult to get something decent, these days. I spent hours and hours trawling the internet and I hope I’ve found some real crackers for you, including a brilliant £20 cookbook for a fiver and some incredibly posh truffles that you can snap up at your local supermarket. There’s also a bit of a DIY idea (a huge jar of Himalayan bath salts for under ten pounds, anyone?) a very cool egg cup and a makeup bag that feels far more expensive than it actually is. You’ll have seen some of the ideas already (a few from previous vids were too good not to re-mention) but there’s plenty that’s new. Enjoy the video, and if you want to skip the chat and head straight down to business, the products are listed below the screen.

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Wally, Waldo and Visible Germ Trajectories

ruth crilly red magazine

1) I’m featured in Red Magazine Online this week talking about top beauty tips. You can take a little look here – just a small mention, but I’m always happy to pop up in magazines and I hardly ever remember to tell anyone about it! So yes, Red Magazine, beauty tip, here.

2) Short and sweet post, today, because I have a terrible sore throat and cold and I KNOW I picked it up from travelling on the tube when a gross man sneezed all over the place without covering his mouth and nose. Ugh! I hid in my scarf and held my breath but to no avail, I could almost see the germs whizzing towards me! I might start travelling by airtight bubble. Anyway, pets: we’ve been doing a spot of dressing-up with Dexter this week (above) because someone very kindly sent me a “Where’s Wally” dog costume (it had Where’s Waldo printed on the packet, so I thought that Waldo might have been Wally’s dog’s name. But no. Waldo is the US version of Wally, apparently. Thank you to Onya for coming to my rescue on Instagram!). And so here’s Dexter in his hat and glasses, above, and Mr Bear asleep, below. Nothing new there…

A Last Summer Hurrah At Waddesdon Manor & A Transitional Marks & Spencer Dress I Love

Maybe it’sgot something to do with the fact I spent my summer covered in paint, moving boxes and cooking every meal on the BBQ because we finally got a garden, but the past few months seemed to have passed by…

International Women’s Day

The beauty industry is a place that is both for women and against women. Feminism isn’t a word that crops up in this industry too much, but my version of feminism is something that supports equality across the sexes, regardless … Read more

Dreamy Creamy Cashew Milk Ice Cream.

Have you tried Booja Booja ice cream? It’s heaven in a tub, actual divine deliciousness on your tastebuds, but, it’s £6 a tub. Six freaking quid and it’s never on offer, I should know because I check all the time, and now we’ve moved 20 miles away from a Waitrose it’s probably a thing of the past… no, I’m not weeping, YOU are.

So anyway, the ingredients list of Booja Booja chocolate ice cream is pretty simple; water, cashews, agave nectar and cacao powder. Easy to replicate, right? So off I went to buy some agave nectar to make my own. I don’t own an ice cream maker (yet, it’s definitely on the list now) but if you do, yay for you because tastebud heaven is right around the corner. If not, prepare yourself for many treks to the freezer to stir, but I promise, it’s worth it, because GUYS, guys, guys! this. is. it.

Ingredients.

A blender
3/4 cup cashews, soaked for 3 hours
1 cup water
1 cup ice
3 tbsp cacao powder
3-4 tbsp agave nectar

Method

Soak your cashews in water for a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 6 hours (so that they don’t go slimy).
Then drain and pour your softened cashew nuts into a blender with 1 cup of water and blend for 2-3 minutes until you have a smooth milk. Then add the ice, cacao and agave nectar and blend again, taste and adjust the sweetness or chocolate taste to your liking before pouring into your ice cream maker or a suitable bowl for the freezer!
Then it’s just a case of following your ice cream makers’ instructions or stirring up your ice cream in the freezer every 20 minutes or so until almost completely frozen to break up the ice crystals, the texture without an ice cream maker won’t be quite as smooth as Booja Booja, but the taste is there. That agave nectar is the secret ingredient and the taste is spot on when compared to BB, so make sure you have it.

All in all, buying the cashews is about £2.50 for a bag, £2.50 for the agave and £5 for a big bag of cacao powder. Roughly it works out to be about £1 for the cashews, 50p for the agave and 20p for the cacao per batch. That’s £1.70 for around 400ml of deliciousness, you’re welcome. *sassy emoji*
