April Beauty Favourites

makeup favorites video

There are two beauty favourites videos, this month – one on skincare and one on makeup – and I filmed them nice and early. I’m trying to do everything nice and early, just in case I get a sudden late-pregnancy energy deficit – or, scarier thought – I go into labour before forty weeks. (I’m begging Baby AMR to stay in until forty weeks or thereabouts, because much as I can’t wait to meet him/her, we are going to have a seriously stressful house-move situation! Also, I have loads of work to do. Also, I have some really nice maternity stuff that I’d like to waddle about in, it would seem a shame not to show it off. How shallow. Also, I need as long as possible to get my head around the idea of a) childbirth and b) the fact that I’m going to have a baby. You’d have thought I’d be well au fait with these ideas by now, but…no. Do give my pregnancy blog a read if you’d like a small glimpse into my antenatal mind.)

Anyway, April beauty favourites. The first video is skincare, the second is makeup. I’ve listed all of the products below, for those who can’t abide watching me ramble away. But actually, do watch the makeup video if only for the brilliant brow transformation that I spoke about in my recent Gimme Brow post. It’s subtle, but strangely pleasing and it makes so much difference to my face. It’s right at the end of the makeup vid, if you want to just get to that part…

Sunday Tittle Tattle: Naughty Tits and Beauty Bits

This week has been mostly dominated by my naughty left breast, which decided to go and get Mastitis. I particularly enjoyed the flu-like symptoms, which were a bit like the world’s worst hangover combined with having a lobotomy sans anaesthetic. Anyway, I’m thankfully over the worst of it, with any luck, so am ready to start a new week with renewed vigour. Sadly, the thing I’m most excited about, at the moment, is testing out my new Dyson V6 hoover. I bought it last weekend in Curry’s after being wowed by my friend’s one. (For hoover geeks, I went for the Total Clean version of the V6, not the “Fluffy” one, because apparently it’s much better. We shall see!)

john lewis lock n roll shower caddy

An update on the “Lock n Roll” shower caddy that I mentioned in my homeware video: yes, it does stick to the wall. But you have to do it properly. I stuck it on and it fell off, nearly giving me a heart attack when it crashed into the shower tray. Mr AMR stuck it back on and it may as well have been cemented in – I’ve loaded it up with products, leant on it with all of my weight and given it a good pull and it’s not budging. Bravo. You can see my homeware video here.

aurelia miracle collection

Lovely beauty bag from Aurelia Probiotic Skincare, makers of the nicest body oil in the world. It’s pictured here with the Refine & Glow Miracle Collection, which includes the Miracle Cleanser (luscious) as well as the Miracle Balm, which I haven’t tried yet, and the Cell Repair Night Oil. And seven little rolled-up muslin cloths, which is a nice touch. The bag on its own is £25, the collection including bag is £42.

Copylab Masterpieces

If you don’t follow @copylab on Instagram, you’re missing some incredible work. Fashion intern and student, Chris Rellas, at Georgetown University, reworks art masterpieces to give them a fashion and beauty twist. Chris uses my favourite brand, Chanel, a lot so I’ve pulled out the best double C ones but really, check in on Instagram to see all the fashion pictures. The painting above is Femme à mi-corps, couchée sur un divan by Joseph-Désiré Court, reworked with make-up inspiration from Chanel Spring 2014 Runway looks.

The original painting here, before the subject was given metallic brows is Pavonia by FredericLeighton. Remember the Chanel jewelled brows from autumn/winter 2013 runways? That’s them, right there!

This is probably the most familiar painting – Girl With A Pearl Earring by Vermeer – and a cheeky Chanel shaped liberty taken with the earring!

I love these – they’re so imaginative and interesting – and they’ve made me Google more info about fine art so educational, too!

The Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Coffret

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Coffret

If you’re a fan of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle (I must say that it’s my most-worn Chanel fragrance) then this limited edition coffret might just shoot to the top of your must-haves list. Containing an eau de parfum and a purse spray, it has all bases covered in terms of scent application, but I think that the biggest pull is that it’s just so beautifully presented – definitely the kind of packaging you’d want to put out on display. Although then you have the million dollar question: do you display it with the doors closed, or do you have them open, revealing the treasures inside?

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Coffret

Or do you arrange it all a bit like a shop (see above), with the contents set out in front of the closed coffret, creating a kind of Coco Mademoiselle shrine? Choices, choices. Because the contents are as chic and beautiful as the minimalist, monochrome box; the 50ml eau de parfum spray with its classic glass bottle and the little refillable purse spray with its sophisticated styling and luxurious golden lid…

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Coffret

In terms of value for money (possibly not what you’d be overly concerned with if you were hankering after this!) the 50ml perfume is worth £68 and the purse spray, with three 7.5ml refills, is worth approximately – I dunno – forty or fifty pounds? I’m guesstimating that because the full-size purse spray, which has three 20ml refills, is £76, but we all know that little luxury things often don’t scale down in price at the same rate as their size! So I think that you get your money’s worth, pretty much, though I do have to say that the full-size purse spray (here) is very special and one of the nicest perfume-y things I own. Well worth considering if you don’t want to stretch to the coffret…

The Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Coffret costs £110 and is available at Selfridges.com here.

Your Skincare Goals as Told by Instagram

Your Skincare Goals as Told by Instagram

How is your January shaping up? Have you stuck to any resolutions you previously made or have they slowly fallen by the wayside? Either way, it is important to remember that it is only January; you have another eleven and a half months to make all your dreams, goals and wishes come true. Perhaps you have only resolved to be a better version of yourself, well why not extend that to your skincare routine? I took to Instagram to ask what your skincare goals are for the coming twelve months and the five most popular answers may just surprise you…

Your Skincare Goals as Told by Instagram

1, To always remove make-up before going to bed

On paper it seems a non-brainer, logical and damn foolish to not fully wash your face before heading off to the land of nod, but we’ve all been there and have the foundation, stained, pillow cases to prove it. No we aren’t always drunk or lazy, sometimes life gets in the way – maybe you’ve worked a double shift and every last morsel of energy you possess was used to limber yourself into bed, or maybe you’ve got kids, or maybe, just maybe you are human and have the right to be exhausted every now and then. I’m not the biggest fan of face wipes but if used sparingly, they can be beneficial – I mean quickly removing the bulk of your make-up, has got to be better than sleeping in a full face? Not all facial wipes are equal and if you are going to dabble, occasionally with the grown up version of a wet wipe, you want the best. Admittedly the Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads are costly at £12.95 a tub but they are multi-action and probably the best of their kind; not only do the small, textured pads remove the majority of your make-up but they exfoliate and cleanse the skin too – not to mention they have an avid celebrity fan base (Kylie Jenner is said to be a fan). No they won’t rival a full cleanse at the sink but in a pinch they will work and sometimes (the emphasis really is on sometimes) that is all you need.

2, To wear SPF daily

Goodness knows I love a daily SPF but I fully understand that it does take a little time to fully form such habit. In my opinion the make or break factor (pun not intended but glorious none the less) is the facial sunscreen you use. No-one and I mean no-one enjoys a heavy, sticky facial product – sunscreen or otherwise. Take the time to find a daily, standalone SPF (a moisturiser with SPF isn’t going to cut it here I’m afraid) that is suited to your needs and I can all but promise you half the battle has already been fought. I find the secret to SPF success to be found in a lightweight and all but weightless formula such as Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50 PA +++ – perfect for all year round, including the warmer seasons due to the high factor. Another great and altogether more budget friendly option is La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Face Ultra-Light Fluid SPF50+. Once you have found your ideal facial SPF, one way to ensure that you apply it daily, is to place it wherever you store your morning skincare products, grab a bright post it note and scribble the words “Use Me” on it. If something all but demands your instant attention, you can bet that you will be more inclined to actually put it to use.

3, To use toner…regularly

I confess, I too often fall at the toner hurdle in the skincare Olympics. Truthfully I find most don’t do much and as such, I view it as an additional faff that I can live without; I will confess that when I do take the time to reach for Pixi Glow Tonic my complexion does benefit massively from its brightening and refining qualities. Perhaps the key to unlocking the benefits of a toner is to find one that does more than simply refresh the skin, look for one that enhances the skin and makes the general process a joy.

4, Use only what the skin needs

We’ve all fallen prey to a marketing campaign or two in our time, and as such have beauty products – and probably other gadgets too – that aren’t really suited to our needs. The truth is the younger you happen to be, the less skincare products you really need: cleanse, moisturise, tone (lolz see above) and treat if necessary – save the fancy – and often expensive – products for when you really need them. Perhaps you don’t really know what your skin needs, or what type of complexion you actually have? In that case, I recommend popping along to a skincare counter such as Clinique, Kiehls or Clarins and asking for a little assistance – in my experience such brands are staffed by kind and caring individuals, that also happen to be very knowledgeable too.

5, Sleep more, drink more, treat more

The party season is long gone but the affects of many a sleepless night, lack of hydration and general negligence still show, despite my best intentions and heavy duty concealer. Sleep is when our bodies – which of course includes our skin – takes the time to self-repair; getting less than what you require (around 8 hours) can and will take its toll: from dark under eye circles to even premature ageing. Turning off at night if no easy task – especially when you have the world of Twitter and Instagram at your fingertips – but if you slowly but surely, attempt to crawl into bed a little earlier than planned, you will eventually notice a world of difference in regards to the condition of your skin. The same can be said of drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water daily – make it a gradual process, and you’ll soon not think twice about lugging around a water bottle.
