So let’s get started learning about pigments….:-)

What Are Pigments?

Pigments are a loose powder and are basically the main ingredient in eyeshadow minus the binder that keeps them pressed in a pan. Usually the binder, what ever kind is used, dulls the color once added. When the binders are excluded then what you have is a brightly pigmented loose powder known as a “pigment”. Most pigments are shimmery however, there are some matte shades as well.

How to Use Pigments

There are limitless ways to use pigments, however I am going to share 5 of the easiest and best ways I know to use them.

1. EYES – Use a light to medium shade and gently pat on the lower lid. This is great when you are short on time and need something that looks good but is quick. Simply dip a flat, stiff brush into the pigment and place in the lid. Press the brush into the pigment and tap off any excess. You can keep the color below the crease or bring it up slightly past the crease. Use a fluffy dome brush to blend out the crease and feather out any harsh lines. This adds a perfect and easy pop to your eyes.

2.  CHEEKS – These work wonders as highlights for the top of your cheekbones and for adding dimension to your look. One of my favorites to use is “New Year’s Eve“. This is a stunning soft beige with flecks of gold. Just make sure you use one that is light and works to compliment your skin tone. To use, dip your brush into the pigment and place in the lid and press the brush into the pigment. Tap off the excess and gently sweep along the top of the cheekbone. You can also use this in the inner corner of the eyes to open them and make them appear larger, on the upper lip along the Cupid’s Bow to make your lips look fuller, and under the brow as a highlight.

3.  LIPS – Pigments can be mixed with any lip gloss or lipstick to make your own custom lip color. Take a small amount of clear lip gloss and add to the back of your hand or on a flat surface. (You can use a lid or a small palette as long as it’s flat) Dip your brush into the pigment and mix with the gloss until you have a paste then apply to your lips with a lip brush. You don’t want to mix or apply it with a wand as not to transfer the color back into the remaining gloss. You can also use pigments with lipsticks by cutting a small section of the lipstick and doing the same thing. This will tone done a bright color, change the undertone or add shimmer. You can also mix and match pigments to get the perfect shade!

4. EYELINERS– As liquid eyeliners, pigments are great, especially when you need a custom shade. To create your own liner, use a mixing medium like the FACE Atelier Transforming Gel or the Makeup Forever Aqua Seal, and add a small amount to the inside of the lid to the pigment. There should be plenty in the lid to do this! Add just a couple of drops of your mixing medium to the lid and with a small brush mix together until you get a paste then line your lids as usual. You can also apply this to the entire lid for an extreme metallic look. Mix and match shades to create the perfect shade to compliment your eyes. The options are limitless. 🙂

5.  HAIR – Add the perfect sparkle or shine to your hair with pigments.  Simply mix a small amount with the MAC Fluid Plus or any hair product as long as it’s not to thick. You need a thinner consistency to make sure the pigment mixes well. Use a brush or small scooper and add as much or as little as you like and shake. By adding just a small amount your get a shiny effect without it being glittery.

So that’s it, 5 different ways to use pigments. You can switch out the colors we used and use your favorite pigment to customize a look that’s perfect for you. The only limitations with pigments is your imagination. They can be used to sprinkle on a wet nail to add sparkle and dimension to your nails or for a gradient effect. You can also mix it with a clear polish for a custom shade. There are so many uses for pigments and I hope this gives you some ideas on how to use them.
