A Brilliant Light Moisture Fluid for Oily and Combination Skin.

best cream for sensitive skin

I mentioned La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane Fluide a couple of weeks ago, but here it is again with its own full page review. Because it deserves one, absolutely; it’s a great option for people who would like a very lightweight, non-oily moisturiser that will hydrate and soothe in a very simple, uncomplicated way. This little moisturiser has been specifically formulated for skin that’s oily or combination but at the same time sensitive or easily aggravated so it’s an absolute gem for pulling out when you have those “crazy skin” weeks and just want to take everything back down to basics.

I actually discovered Toleriane Fluid when I was looking for cheaper alternatives to Omorovicza’s Elemental Emulsion, a wonderfully delicate skin hydrator that sets my beauty heart fluttering but also has a price-tag that would make my accountant a bit shouty. (You can read about EE here – it costs £95!)  Toleriane has absolutely nothing in common with Elemental Emulsion, formula wise, but in terms of texture and overall vague effect, it is definitely worth a look. Same light, fluid consistency coupled with surprisingly good hydrating abilities. I have to admit that Omorovicza’s version kicks Toleriane to the kerb when it comes to hydration, but then I haven’t yet found anything as light as Elemental Emulsion that does quite the same job when it comes to hydration. It’s in a league of its own. Perhaps Hydraluron, but that’s a serum, and it doesn’t have the same comfortable feel…

very light moisturising fluids

Chantecaille’s Water Flower Fluid also has a gorgeous consistency – again, not quite as supremely hydrating as the Omorovicza, but up there with the best of them. (I tested over a dozen moisture fluids to find the best ones – I’ll write that up soon!) All of those pictured above are suitable for oily/combination skin, but I would say that only the two on the left would be suitable for “normal” and if you had dry or very dry, then maybe only the Omorovicza would be any good. And even then, you’d use it as a kind of “boost” of moisture before your actual cream. In short; moisture fluids tend to be better for skin that isn’t too dry! The Toleriane in particular is only suited to oily-combination, really; it’s

Anyway, Toleriane is a mere fraction of the price of Omorovicza’s moisturiser, so I consider it to be quite a find. It really is for oily or combination skins, though – it wouldn’t be anywhere near rich enough for dry. Even on my “normal” days, I find it to be the wrong choice. It’s not that it’s particularly mattifying, it’s just that it disappears straight into the skin and doesn’t have any of the kind of residue or slip that gives you that plumpy-comfort feel. But for oily or combination skins: bingo. It’s as simple as they come, this moisturiser – it gives you just enough hydration if you need some to layer over spot formulas or to pop on beneath your makeup.

The ingredients list is pretty short and unfussy (see below) and the fluid is dispensed from a pump-action bottle, nice and convenient. It’s a good choice for people who panic about how to moisturise their oily and spot-prone skin and also cheap enough for teens looking for effective skincare. And as I mentioned; if you have those “crazy skin” weeks where your face is spot-prone but angry and sore at the same time, it’s a blessing in a bottle.

There’s  a third off this moisturiser at the moment at Escentual.com – it should be £15, it’s now £10. You can find it here.

Ingredients: Water, Squalene, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Carprylyl Glycol.

Perfect Skin: How Far Would You Go? #ad

ruth crilly

Tomorrow (today, if you’re reading this by email) will see the launch of Indeed Lab’s new Beauty Length campaign, looking at the – often unbelievable – lengths that many of us will go to in order to look and feel more beautiful. Topping the beauty wishlist? Perfect skin.

Indeed Labs know a good deal about skin perfecting; they make brilliantly effective beauty products that moisturise, resurface and brighten, targeting dehydration, wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, dullness, lack of volume – the list goes on.

As part of their Beauty Length campaign, Indeed Labs have been doing a bit of research, finding out how far people will go in the name of beauty – a third of the people surveyed said that they’d happily give up chocolate for life if it meant perfect skin forever, and there were those who had made quite extreme dietary adjustments in pursuit of a flawless face. From eating spinach at every meal for a whole month to hand-squeezing grapes to extract the juice and apply as a tonic, it seems that nothing is too much trouble! I asked Twitter for their quirkiest beauty lengths – one follower had eaten hornet larvae (though I’m not sure whether that was a joke!) and others had embarked on serious courses of acid peels and homemade baking soda facials.

I’ve been trying to think of some of the mad things that I’ve done, beauty-wise. (There are many.) I think some of the best were in my teens, when I made an iced cucumber mask and gave myself chilblains on my face, and also used so much toothpaste on my spots that it congealed into my hairline and turned into a concrete mess, impossible to brush out. That was an interesting bus journey to school!

Possibly the biggest beauty length I’ve gone to as an adult is giving up drinking milk. It took me absolutely ages to work out that milk was causing my adult acne (I’d tried to rule out wheat, shellfish and citrus before landing on the answer!) and it was a bit of a major thing when I realised that I’d have to cut it out. Bearing in mind that I was addicted to eating porridge for breakfast (half a pint of milk just there) it was no small challenge. And I haven’t really drunk milk since (I think it’s two years now – you can read the posts on it here) though I started on Lactofree when I was pregnant and it seems to be OK – no spots yet.

I also wear SPF on my face religiously if I’m going to be outside for any significant length of time. Is this a “beauty length”? I don’t know. It’s definitely a necessity, and I used to be a bit gung-ho about it – I had to make a concerted effort to incorporate it into my routine and I still find it a faff having that extra layer. Ditto primers: I just cannot be bothered using them – what a palaver! – but they do make skin look extra-perfected and are completely worth the effort, especially if you usually find that makeup creeps into fine lines or looks patchy and uneven.

indeed labs hydraluron

During pregnancy my skin became more dehydrated and it has erred on the dry side ever since, so I use a hydrating serum before my moisturiser every time. (Another step I used to be a bit gung-ho with, but regular use definitely pays off. Have a read of last year’s serum post here.) Indeed Labs’ Hydraluron is a top serum for tackling dehydration – it contains a pure form of hyaluronic acid (an ingredient that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water) giving skin a huge moisture boost. It’s lightweight and suitable for pretty much anyone – even oily skin can be dehydrated, and this does the trick without leaving any greasy residue.

Of course, using serum is the very opposite of a “beauty length” – it’s so light and easy to apply, it’s probably the quickest of the skincare steps. Potent ingredients, great results, no extreme measures needed! (Bye-bye chilblain-causing frozen cucumber mask.)

On Friday 18th September Indeed Labs will be showing that there’s no need to go to great beauty lengths to tackle your skin problems. They will be taking over three London stations and handing out samples of their targeted skincare treatments, offering solutions to your greatest beauty woes. Head to Paddington, Victoria or Oxford Circus stations where you can also share your “perfect skin” selfie; use the hashtag #SkinTalksIndeedListens and you’ll be entered into a competition to win a mini break for you and a friend.

And if you’re out and about in central London, then keep watch for one of the three branded cabs that will be cruising about – if you hop inside to confess your beauty length story then you’ll get a full-size product tailored to your skin needs.

You can find Indeed Lab’s products at Boots.com – the amazing Hydraluron is a very affordable £19.99.

The Kurkdjian Love-In Continues…

Francis Kurkdjian Apom Femme Body Cream Review

Sorry about this one folks: it’s a post about an amazing product that I can’t find a proper stockist for. I’m well aware of how annoying that is, but bear with me and I’ll try to add some stockist information by the end of the day. I’m currently away from Mission Control (again) and Google isn’t being my friend on this one!

On Friday I briefly mentioned a perfume that I’m head over heels in love with: Lumiere Noir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. It’s a dark, sultry, almost-too-sexy-to-be-legal kind of scent that takes the classic “Girl Next Door” rose and turns it into a Lady Who Knows Many Things kind of rose. If you catch my drift. You can read about Lumiere Noir (and also about the new Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Intense that’s about to be launched) in this post here; but for now my love-in with Kurkdjian continues with his APOM body cream.

If you like Orange Blossom then by God you will love this. It’s a hundred heady summer holiday evenings all packed into a tube. The cream itself is rich and sumptuous, but it’s the fragrance that really catches your attention. And then lingers on. For days.

The cream actually seems to be longer lasting than even the perfume version; maybe because the body cream absorbs into your clothes or bedsheets? But on the downside, the cream does seem more difficult to track down online, whereas the fragrance version is stocked at lots of the major department stores. I can only find the cream on Amazon, weirdly, but you can buy the perfume version at Liberty (here) so I’m hoping that they stock the body cream, too.. I’ll endeavour to find out. Let me know if you have any information on the APOM Body Cream’s whereabouts! It’s pricey at £50 a pop, so definitely a bit of a treat, but really does smell incredible.

*Update: it’s on Kurkdjian’s official website here for €48. If you’re in Paris, you can visit the store and have a good nosey about. (Pun intended.) The address is 5, rue d’Alger, 75001 Paris.

Berocca for Your Face: Vitamin C Serums and Fizzy Masks!

ruth crilly vitamin c skincare review

This video backfired on me a little bit: I started thinking about filming it four years ago, but have only just managed to get my act together, and as a result more than half the products I mentioned were discontinued when I went to do my credits! So I had to edit them all out, and even after that there were still two things that no longer existed! Epic fail. Just goes to show that the whole carpe diem thing is true – seize the day, get things done when they occur to you, don’t have shelves of skincare categorised into weird sections that you promptly forget about as soon as the next brilliant idea enters your head…

Nevertheless, there are some crackers in this vid; I wanted to collect together skincare that (kind of) replicated the effects of a Berocca tablet, but on your face instead of inside your body. So: fizzy, orangey, Vitamin C stuff that brightens and zizzes and generally gives everything a bit of a lift and a boost. One thing that I completely forgot to put in, that would have been quite appropriate, was the REN Flash Rinse Facial – not my number one treatment, by any means, but definitely fizzy and vitamin-y.

Anyway: see what you think, add your own suggestions, particularly if you can think of affordable-yet-effective serums and masks that have a Berocca-esque vibe. If you haven’t a clue what a Berocca is, it’s a multivitamin tablet that you drop into water. It fizzes about, dissolves, turns the water (and your wee) bright orange, makes you feel less hungover, etc etc..
