Haircuts, Homebase and Hinges…

Starting the week with a new vlog. One with a ridiculous title – Haircuts and Butt Hinges – but I didn’t have the energy to think of something better. I was so tired yesterday I barely had the energy to think of a title at all – the video was nearly just called “Vlog”. I was so tired I forgot to put both of my breasts inside my bra – I spent half of the day with the right one running free, so to speak, and the cup (it was a nursing bra) hanging loose inside my t-shirt. It wasn’t until I got back home again from our shopping expedition that I realised that I also had completely odd socks on and dark streaks of unblended foundation on my cheeks where I had been testing out different shades.

It’s no surprise I was tired, really – I’d like to blame it on motherhood, that old chestnut, but it wouldn’t be strictly true. On Friday night I stayed up until 2am editing my novel (it’s done! I just need to find someone crazy enough to want to read it!) and then my mind was whirring and I didn’t get to sleep until four. On Saturday night, I went to bed at 10pm but Mr AMR insisted on having a Ray Donovan marathon (excellent TV show, not some weird sexual act) and we didn’t turn the light off until 1.30am. So all the tiredness is, stupidly, totally self-inflicted.

These late nights are all well and good if you can just laze about the next day, get up at 10, have a leisurely brunch and wonder whether you might take a walk to the flower market or use the afternoon to grab an extra snooze; both of my days involved wheeling a squeaky-wheeled wooden bus up and down the living room carpet and having a plastic giraffe repeatedly poked into my eye sockets. And that was just trying to keep Mr AMR amused! Ha.

Luckily, the baby naps twice a day so I managed a cheeky Saturday morning snooze (two hours) and yesterday, when the sun was blazing and there was not a cloud in the sky, I fell asleep on my picnic blanket in the garden. Glorious.

Watch the video for baby glimpses (she’s almost one, can you believe?), butt hinges (don’t ask) and a quick trip into town.

New Addiction: The IKEA PAX Wardrobe Planner

The IKEA PAX Wardrobe Planner

I have a new bad habit that’s taking up an inordinate amount of my time. But it’s good fun. And it’s free, unlike online clothes shopping, which was costing me approximately five billion pounds a year. Welcome, friends, to IKEA’s Wardrobe Planner. Build the wardrobe of your dreams, even if you don’t have any space for it! Create the walk-in of your wildest fantasies, even if you’re living in a shoebox-sized flat just off the Tottenham Court Road! Lose a few hours working out exactly how many shelves you need for your shoes and whether a 100cm drawer is needed for your lingerie or a 50cm would be sufficient… (Three 50cm drawers is good, three 100cm even better: one for pants, one for bras, one for socks. I’ve given this a lot of thought.)

The IKEA PAX Wardrobe Planner

This is the most fun I’ve had since my house renovations began. Who knew that running out of budget because of a big f*ck-off pipe appearing in the middle of your groundworks/everyone underestimating their costs/electricians charging the WORLD for putting a few wires together, would have such an addictive silver lining? Someone coming in and doing all of their fancy bespoke joinery would never have been as joyful as being able to sit here dragging-and-dropping Komplement drawers into place. And I’m saving myself thousands and thousands of pounds.

IKEA: I salute you. You did good. I’ll probably be another couple of months deciding exactly which combo I need (two lots of 200cm wide x 236cm tall, but what to put inside?! Which doors?!); just make sure you’re ready with all of the right parts, in the right colours, or else I’ll have to eat my words.

Glowing Face Powders and the NARS Steven Klein Palette

nars steven klein one shocking moment palette

I’ll be back with more shade details on the new Steven Klein/NARS collaboration when it comes out in a week or so – it’s very, very covetable. Though I seem to be a sucker for things featuring the work of great fashion photographers – must be something to do with my job…

nars makeup collection 2015

I loved the Norman Parkinson and Charlotte Tilbury collab for its beautiful, retro appeal; NARS’ collection with Steven Klein is completely the opposite. Edgy and modern. My pick would be the cheek palette – “One Shocking Moment” – because it features the artwork on the lid of the actual product, not just on the outer box, and the  shades  inside are great.

Take a look at the video – star turn of the day goes to New CiD Cosmetics and their amazing iGlow in Scirocco. Stunning. It seems to have sold out at a few of the bigger online retailers, so I hope it’s not something they’re discontinuing, but good old Amazon have it here for £24. It’s just the most amazing skin-enlivening complexion enhancer.

Meet My July Advertisers…

PicMonkey Collage

During the month of July, I’ve had the privilege of having Shireen as my Exclusive Advertiser. Shireen blogs over at Reflection of Sanity, and I particularly enjoyed reading which products make up Shireen’s everyday makeup products.

TITLE-2

Hi everyone! I’m Shireen, the quirky writer behind Reflection of Sanity which is a beauty blog with a small dash of food and life in general. I’m a Malaysia born and Canada based middle age mother of two who had a beauty awakening in mid 2013. With a huge passion for beauty and food, I desperately needed an outlet to unleash all the little voices inside my head and thus, my blog was born.

I love writing with a wicked and sometimes twisted sense of humour because well, life is too short to be serious all the time, no? So come join me on my uphill journey to discover the good, the bad and the ugly of the beauty world and I promise you that we will share a laugh or two and maybe ten.

Special thank you to Gemma for allowing me to advertise here and for being one of the sweetest people I’ve ever interacted with! xx

The last of my lovely Large Advertisers is Jordan or Jordan Alice.

Hi everyone! I’m Jordan, a 22 year old beauty blogger, currently on medical leave from university with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My blog focuses mainly on beauty reviews and hauls, although in the future I’d like to try some lifestyle posts. I set up my blog mainly because I’m sure my friends and family were getting fed up of me constantly telling them about my new favourite blushes or the new products I was looking forward to trying! It has also helped me to deal with my illness a lot, being bed-bound for days on end can get very boring & lonely! Although I haven’t been blogging for long, I absolutely love it! I hope if you pop by you enjoy reading my posts as much as I enjoy writing them! x

I also had five Medium Advertisers during July; The Vegan Taff, Toy Saturn, Electric Suede, Miniemble and Confessions of a Redhead.

Vintage China Tea-Cup Nails

vintage china tea cup nails

The lovely @NailArtistMartha has worked her manicure wizardry again; this week I set her the task of doing something pretty with Models Own’s Sticky Fingers polish in Pastel Petals Green. Not the easiest one to pull off – it’s kind of an odd shade and the stickers are a little fiddly – but I love what Martha came up with. Subtle and very vintage-looking. I love the single accent nail on each hand – I’d probably have gone completely nuts with all of the stickers and had a few on each finger! Here’s a close-up on the flower transfer:

vintage flower transfer manicure

It’s lifted a little at the edges (Martha said that it can be quite hard to keep them stuck down, you have to make sure that the polish is touch-dry and then put them on) but it’s very effective. It looks just like the patterns you find on the china cups and plates in bric-a-brac shops! And it’s a hell of a lot easier to stick a sticker on than hand paint a flower, I would imagine..

I think it’s really quite a clever little kit. Without the flower embellishments, I’d hate the pastel green, but together the two elements work very well. I might even be tempted to have a go at this look myself – you know how I love a bit of a distraction when I have loads of work to do! I’ve actually started doing my nails when I’m at the computer (ie, fourteen hours a day) because I can paint them as I wait for things to upload, and then I can still type as the polish is drying. It’s quite a good system.

There are loads of other shade and sticker combos in the Sticky Fingers Collection. My favourite is probably the dark taupe-y-looking shade (Sweet Candy) which comes with little candy and gingerbread man stickers. It’s kind of sad that I’m still into gingerbread men at the ripe old age of thirty-three but there you go. Mental age of five.

You can find the whole Sticky Fingers range at ASOS here – each set is £6. Follow Martha on Instagram for more nail pics – Martha works from a salon in Bath called Wisteria Lane. You can see their website here. The nails in the picture are shown after two coats of Models Own Pastel Petals Green and transfers applied using tweezers.
